The Fire country is marked by forests and is one of the largest ninja countries in the world, sharing borders with more countries than any other. It was renowned for keeping peace until orochimaru invaded.

The Wind country is marked by deserts and dry mountain ranges. It is one of the larger ninja countries in the world. Besides Hi No Kuni it has suffered damages from war.

This country resembles most of the other countries, with forests dotting the landscape. It is unknown why the country is called Water, but it may be due to seasonal showers which give the region more rainfall than other countries.

The Rice Field country is marked by forests and rice fields. It is also known as the Sound Country. This is where the rebels live in fear of the current Hokage. The killer Orochimaru.

The Earth Country is one of the larger ninja countries and part of the Five Great Shinobi Nations, sharing borders with Waterfall, Grass, Rain and several unnamed countries. Because of Hidden Rock's warlike tendencies against the Fire Country, their invasion path leads them through smaller countries like Grass. It is said that most of it's terrain is mountainous and hard to traverse. There was once a bridge connecting the Earth Country to Kusa no Kuni (Grass Country) called the Kannabi Bridge which was a straight route to Konoha. During the Great War with Konoha, the bridge was destroyed, attributing to their defeat and cutting off their major supply line.
