Devin Moore has been a hot topic of late. People are still looking for the mid to late round RB to get excited about. Moore got better each season at Wyoming. He ran for 1341 yards and 7 TDs as a Senior. Finished his career with 2963 yards and 15 TDs. He goes 5'10, 190. He has good speed. He didn't get an invite to the Combine, but went to Indy and worked out for scouts at a local facility before the Combine really got underway. Smart move by Moore and his agent.

He didn't have a great workout. Devin ran a 4.41 which surprised everyone. He was expected to be in the 4.3 range. Moore had good numbers in the jumps (35 inches in the VJ, 10 feet in the BJ). He struggled with the 3-cone and short shuttle. That tells you he has trouble changing directions. Not good for a smaller back.

Moore is pretty impressive on game tape. He is small and fast, but he isn't one of those runners who is obsessed with bouncing everything outside. He will run between the tackles. He might lack size, but he's not afraid to hit the hole. I wish he got more behind his pads. He's just under 5'10, but still runs too upright. Moore would handle hits better if he got lower. While he does run hard and is willing to take a hit, he doesn't win many battles. Get lower and you've got a chance.

He's got good vision. He can be elusive, but isn't great at making guys miss. Cuts well. Good burst and has long speed. Devin is more of a one-cut runner than someone who is going to shift and move all over the place. Surprisingly, he likes to stay N-S. Most smaller runners mix in a lot of E-W runninng.

Moore can be a help in the passing game. He's at least adequate as a receiver. Caught 65 career passes. I didn't see great hands or anything like that, but he looked fine catching short stuff. One concern is that he only averaged 5.8 yards per reception. A guy with his speed should have a higher average than that. His blocking is solid. Someone has impressed upon him that the only way he can play in the NFL is to be able to do everything. Moore lacks the strength to be a top flight blocker, but he effort is excellent. That's half the battle in pass pro. Get to your guy and stick with the block. Don't just play patty cake with the defender.

Devin also offers value as a KO returner. He averaged over 20 yards per return in his career and ran one back all the way for a TD.

You can't overvalue Moore because he's not great at anything. He isn't the fastest or most elusive guy. He isn't big. He didn't dominated MWC competition. Very good college player with some NFL potential. The odd thing is that he might project better as a backup RB than a 3rd down back, which a lot of people assume he's meant to be. The 3rd down back is the guy you want in space because of his hands and ability to make guys miss. Moore isn't great in those areas. He's better at getting the ball, making one quick cut, and then getting up the field. Late round prospect.

WMU

Simmons 27 --- Thick build. Works the middle a lot. Good hands. Made tough one-handed catch along sideline vs ILL. Thick legs. Can take a hit and keep going. Has RAC ability. Okay burst. Some slot, some outside. Plucks the ball. Doesn't mind being tightly covered. Good feet, body control.

Blocking?

Great TD catch along sideline.

Ledbetter 82 --- High cut? Has some RAC ability.

Delmas 9 --- Will fly up in run support. Goes low on a lot of tackles. Plays at full speed. Likes to throw his body around and hit. Tough guy. Not a great hitter, though. Can be an outstanding wrap-up tackler.

Fryar 6 --- INT vs ILL. Had inside position and just played the ball well.

Biggers 1 --- Plays on STs. Picked off overthrow and had a nice run back. CB/S. Solid tackler.

_______________________

ILL

Fulton --- Gets off balance at times. Good effort, but sloppy. Needs to learn to use his hands better. Quits moving his feet and ends up reaching/lunging too much. At his best when he can fire off the ball on run blocks and be aggressive. Either got hurt or got benched vs WMU. / Can cut.

W. Davis --- Mostly RDE. Athletic guy. Can penetrate and be disruptive. Athletic enough to get around the edge. /

D. Walker --- LDE. Uses his hands well. Lacks burst. Good run defender. Likes to loop inside on stunts. Will push some TEs around when they try to block him. Stout run defender. /

B. Miller --- Looks like a limited athlete. ILB, but they move him around a lot. Has quick feet, but is skittish, very herky jerky. Very productive, but doesn't really control the middle of the field. Smart. Hustled outside and stripped ball from WR vs WMU. / Plays on STs. Struggles to shed blocks.

V. Davis 1 --- 3rd in tackles. Boundary corner. Good tackler. Plays some slot. Aggressive run defender. Will take on blockers to force the runner back inside. / Can be an explosive tackler. Went through Beanie Wells legs to get him down for a TFL. Can press or play off. Outstanding run defender. Fended off a block from Wells and tackled Juice Williams on a run near the goal line. Broke up a pass on a crossing route vs OSU.

=====================

OHIO STATE

Laurinaitis 33 --- Runs okay. Good range. Hustles in pursuit. Stays off the ball to keep blockers away from him and to have better pursuit angles. Good awareness. Looks smart in coverage. Strong, physical tackler.

Freeman 1 --- Tackling?

Jenkins 2 --- Good STer. Blocked punt vs ILL for safety. Good blitzer. Comes hard off the edge. Physical corner. Loves to jam receivers. Plays the boundary side of the field.

Washington 20 --- Sloppy tackle attempt on Juice. Didn't wrap up forcefully and blew the play. Did make a solid tackle when Juice scrambled up the middle.

Wells 28 --- Big. Downhill runner. Will push the pile. Tough to bring down. Can be slow to the hole as he reads blocks. Has pretty good feet. Cuts well for a big guy. Good vision. Does read his blocks. Good stiff arm. Fast enough to get wide. Gets into traffic on runs up the middle and just pumps his legs and fights for yards. Lowers his shoulder prior to contact and really gets behind his pads.

Robiskie 80 --- Tough. Will catch the ball in traffic and take a big hit. Plucks the ball. Will sell out when going for the ball.

Hartline 9 --- Junior. Some slot. Quick. Had ball knocked away from him too easily by LB. Good hands. Can make tough catches. Had a 17-yd run on an End Around vs ILL. Shows RAC ability.

Burley 77 --- Played RT vs WFU. Can pull. Looks good on some plays.

Thomas LG 76 --- Feet aren't good. Sloppy pass blocker. Big, physical guy, but feet don't move when he's trying to block someone and that gets him off balance. Also too much of a waist-bender. Pulls okay, but is still too upright. Downblocks well.

* Time for some ACC coverage. Darrius Heyward-Bey could be the #3 or #4 WR taken this year. He has the best size/speed numbers of any WR in the class. He's 6'2, 208 and ran a 4.3 at the Combine. Those numbers get your attention.

DHB is tough. He catches a lot of short passes. Part of that is to take advantage of his RAC skills and part is because Maryland hasn't had strong QB play in a while. DHB is a hands catcher. He doesn't pluck the ball smoothly, but he does use his hands and doesn't let the ball get into his body.

He will make tough catches. Against Wake Forest he caught a short pass in the endzone. The ball was thrown by the RB so it wasn't a thing of beauty. DHB went up and grabbed the ball in the air. He took a decent hit just after getting the ball, but held on with no problem. Later in the game he hauled in a deep ball. DHB was covered well by Alphonso Smith. The ball was underthrown. Bey had the ball bounce off him and grabbed it on his way to the ground. He got control just before hitting and held onto it.

Bey isn't a top ten player because he lacks ideal elusiveness and, as I've noted before, he just doesn't look smooth. He can run and catch. The guys you covet are the ones who do those things and make them look fluid and natural. They almost need to seem like second nature. Think about the way Michael Crabtree catches passes. It looks like he was born to catch the ball. Think about Jeremy Maclin running in the middle of the field with the ball. He weaves in and out of defenders like a kid in his backyard running around trees and pretending to be a star. DHB has elements of the other two guys, but seems more like an athlete who plays football.

He does seem to run pretty good routes and I do appreciate a guy with his speed being a tough, physical WR. Good prospect who will go somewhere in the 11-20 range.

* Teammate Dan Gronkowski is a quality TE prospect. He goes 6'4, 255. Dan is a complete TE. He's a pretty good blocker. He's strong enough to seal the edge on run plays. Occasionally a defender will get him off balance, but normally Dan sinks his hips, spreads his feet, and really locks onto his guy. Dan is also a solid receiver. He caught 29 passes for 287 yards and 3 TDs in 2008. He is comfortable working the short middle or going outside in the flat area. I didn't see him working the deep seam area. He does have pretty good hands. He doesn't pluck the ball like a gifted receiver, but looks comfortable catching the ball. He can catch the ball in traffic or in space. I didn't see much in the way of RAC skills. Dan had a good workout at the Combine. He's got a sculpted body. Comes from good bloodlines. Has several brothers who play. The star of the family is a rising Junior TE at Arizona. Mid to late round selection.

* Wake Forest MLB Stanley Arnoux is somewhat of an overlooked player. Everyone focuses on Aaron Curry, but Arnoux has pro potential. He was 2nd on the team in tackles. He also had an INT, 2 FFs, and 5.5 TFLs. He looks comfortable in coverage. He's pretty good at hanging with TEs in the middle of the field. Arnoux is only 6'0, 232. That will be undersized to many teams. He ran a 4.61 at the Combine. That speed shows up on tape. He has good range. His problem is not having great hips or COD ability. In a scheme where he could play downhill he would have the best chance to succeed. Some teams could try him at WLB. Might be a good STer. He tackles well and plays hard. Takes good angles when pursuing the ball.

* Clemson DT Dorrell Scott had a good showing at the Combine. I've tried watching several of his games, but he has yet to really impress me when I see him on tape. He is 6'3, 312. Ran a 4.97 in Indy and did 29 reps. I just don't see that ability on tape. Take away his big day vs South Carolina State and he had 3 TFLs all year. He doesn't look like a dominant run defender who's meant to eat up blockers. Talented kid, but something is missing from what I've seen (or not seen).

* Everette Brown had a good showing at his Pro Day. I put on some tape to take another look at him. This kid knows how to get after the QB. They play him at RDE, LDE, and DT. He can bull rush, use a spin move, or go wide and under the OT. I love his motor and his production. I still think Orakpo is the top pass rusher. Brown is second in my mind. Some people will be put off by the fact he's only 6'1 1/2. That isn't critical for me when you consider him in the 10-20 range and look at his body of work. I think he can play OLB in a 3-4 or DE in a 4-3. Good pass rusher.

UVA

Ogletree 20 -- Has some KOR ability. 16-yard End Around for TD. Looked fast. Impressive run, but not that long. Used a good burst to get upfield, then cut to the inside. Shows RAC ability, but more based on speed than anything else. Able to adjust to the ball. Hands catcher some times, but will also let the ball get into his body. Has a bad habit of letting the ball come to him.

Fast enough to get downfield, but will also work the middle of the field.

Peerman 37 -- Good cutback runner. Good on screens. Looks natural catching the ball and running after the catch. Fast enough to run wide. Switch the ball? Lots of shotgun draws. Okay stiff arm. Runs through arm tackles. Runs hard. Tough guy. Runs with power and balance. Doesn't show anything special in vision or instincts. Runs to daylight. Relies on his speed.

Phillips 85 -- Plays FB in some sets. Sometimes will flex out wide. Hands catcher. Runs good routes. Solid blocker. Little RAC ability.

Monroe 75 -- Sloppy start to the Miami game. Got beaten inside and out in pass pro. Looked much better on the 2nd series. Quick off the ball. Natural pass blocker. Uses his arms/hands well. Needs to sustain blocks better.

Sintim -- Sets the edge well as a LB. Drops down to DE in the Nickel/Dime defense. Can play in space, but doesn't spend much time off the ball.

Luigs 63 - Quick off the ball. Solid on LBs. Strength at the POA? Can he anchor? Pulls well.

Valdez 78 - Played RT and LT. Can cut. Feet are only okay. Not a gifted pass blocker, but he gets the job done. Much better as a run blocker. Too high at times, making it tough to anchor.
