7-1-08 I recently watched a couple of Tennessee games. The Vols are very talented, but also inconsistent. That is true of them as a team and as individual players. Coach Phillip Fulmer needs to get ----- TENNESSEE # 27 Arian Foster – RB – 6’1, 215 – Top speed? Has a bit of wiggle. Good size. Looks like a solid receiver. Good balance. Pretty good vision. Will run through some arm tackles. Has enough athletic ability to bounce runs outside and get up the field. Good cutback runner. # 75 Anthony Parker – LG – 6’3, 300 – Could play C. Can pull. Solid drive blocker. # 78 Ramon Foster – RT – 6’6, 325 – Good down blocker. Doesn’t get as much push as you’d like. Keeps his hands too wide in pass pro. Quick enough for OT? Doesn’t have ideal feet. Looks too upright at times. # 81 Josh Briscoe – WR – 6’3, 183 – Shows a feel for getting open. # 12 Lucas Taylor – WR – 6’0, 185 – Speed? Smart. Has good hands. Very good concentration. Locates the ball well. 51-yd TD catch vs MSU. Beat press coverage and the CB couldn’t catch up. Taylor also couldn’t separate. _________________________________________ |

Some SEC Notes * Tyson Jackson - Plays run well. Okay effort as pass rusher. Needs to improve at flattening out. A bit too straight line. Has to use a rip move and sink that shoulder. LSU had him really jamming the TE in the game I watched. It took away his ability to rush the passer on some downs, but he was effective at slowing down the TE. Has good feet. Uses his hands well. * C. Taylor - Thick build. * H. Johnson - * D. Byrd - Can make tough catches. Good field awareness. Knows how to get open and make a good target for the QB. * -------------- * Ellix Wilson - Good S-L speed. At his best when attacking upfield. * Nevin McKenzie - Good blitzer. Can fly off the edge or take an inside route. Times his blitz well. |

WR Michael Jones (6'4, 203) had a good year, 46-769-10 TDs. I like his size, but I didn't see the kind of suddenness needed to get open against athletic defenders. He's not quick and doesn't make crisp cuts. He also doesn't get off the ball very well. Safety Troy Nolan (6'2, 204) had a huge year in '07. He had 6 INTs and finished 3rd on the team in tackles. He played both the pass and run well. Nolan has good enough range to play FS, but is physical enough to also play SS. I've talked about Texas DE Brian Orakpo before. He's an athletic edge rusher. Injuries slowed him in '07, but he still managed 5.5 sacks. 2 of those came in the bowl game, where he was the defensive MVP of the game. Orakpo is quick and athletic. He's not an explosive guy, though. He also plays under control. He's very much aware of cutbacks and bootlegs. Texas used him creatively. Orakpo plays both sides. He'll drop into coverage quite a bit. He's more of an athlete than a pure pass rusher. 3-4 teams could easily be interested in him. At 6'4, 260 he could play either LB or DE. Texas DT Roy Miller has been a backup to this point in his career. It isn't because he lacks talent. He's simply been stuck behind some other pretty good DTs. He'll finally be a starter as a Senior. Miller lists at 6'2, 300. He might be a bit heavier than that. He gets some push up the middle. Roy has pretty good quickness off the ball. He has a good motor. The key for Miller will be to see how productive he can be playing the majority of snaps. He's got the talent to be a good DT. Making the jump from role player to starter is never easy, though. Quan Cosby is a WR and RS. He put up pedestrian numbers at receiver last year, 60-680-5 TDs. It isn't because he lacks talent. He is a good RS on both punts and kickoffs. He averages over 12 yards per PR and has a TD. He averages almost 25 yards per KOR and has a TD. |

WR Brennan Marion set an NCAA record last year when he averaged 31.9 yards per reception. Think about that. He literally moved the ball 1/3 of the entire field on every catch. That is crazy. I'm happy to say that Marion did impress me as I studied him on tape. He has a track background and has good speed. He runs underneath routes as well, but isn't a workhorse type of receiver. He only caught 39 passes last year. His hands look okay. His route running was solid. Marion came to Tulsa from a JC. I'm excited to see what he can do in his 2nd season there, now that he knows the offense well and has a feel for D-1 football. Marion could have a really big year if Tulsa gets good QB play. DE Moton Hopkins gets talked about as one of the best DL in Conference-USA. He's not a great pass rusher or athlete, but did look like a solid player. Tulsa runs the 3-3-5. That leaves a lot of OL free to block on the best DL. Hopkins isn't good enough to beat double teams. He does give good effort when playing the run. He's got some athletic ability, but only had 3 sacks last year in 14 starts. They list him at 6'3, 270. Some teams might be interested in him as a LDE. He might get considered as a DT if he adds a few pounds. Interesting player, but nothing special. I watched more of UCF as well. I've talked about CB Joe Burnett before. He is a very good prospect. Burnett is athletic and has excellent coverage ability. One thing I like is that he can play man or zone. He shows a good understanding of what is going on. Some guys just follow their man all over and have no idea of what else is happening. There are only a few NFL teams that rely mainly on man coverage anymore so it is crucial for CBs to be able to handle zone or man. Burnett is also a gifted returner. I don't think he's as dynamic as Leodis McKelvin, but he has better hands. CB Johnell Neal is on the other corner for UCF. He also is a solid cover guy. Neal isn't just "the one that QBs pick on". He has good ability. I haven't watched him as thoroughly, but he held his own when I did check him out. Cincinnati also has a pair of good CBs. The best one is Mike Mickens. He has size (6'0, 190), speed, and athletic ability. Mike has very good feet. He gets an excellent break on the ball. The Bearcats play mostly off coverage. That forces Mickens to stay back and react to the receiver. I'm sure this frustrates him, but it will aid his transition to the NFL. So many college CBs jam the heck out of WRs that it can give you a false sense of coverage ability. Mickens does look very good when he's allowed to press and be aggressive. DeAngelo Smith is the "other CB" for Cincy. While he did tie for the NCAA lead with 8 picks last year, Smith isn't a top cover guy. I didn't see top speed or athleticism from him. MISC NOTES Missouri TE Chase Coffman broke a finger and will miss a couple of weeks of practice. Ole Miss DE Greg Hardy could miss as much as half of the season with a stress fracture in his right foot. He's only a Junior, but had a huge year in 2007 and could easily be an early entrant for the draft. |

9/8/08 * Michael Hamlin - 3 INTs vs Citadel * Louis Delmas is off to a good start. Pick in each game. 21 tackles. 1.5 TFLs * Dante Love ... huge numbers, but bad competition. 18-336-3 * Brennan Marion - 8/232/1 * Darryl Richard - 3 TFLs vs BC * Diyral Briggs... 5 sacks leads nation...Pitt, Minn * CIN Deangelo Smith moved to FS. Good hitter, tackler. Pretty good range. Excellent break on the ball. * Mickens gave up one TD to Iglesias on Slant 'n Go. * OL Trevor Canfield is a good run blocker, but not a good athlete. Khalil El-Amin played RT last year. Supposed to move to LT, but stayed on the right side. Not much of a prospect. Reaches, lunges too much. * Byrd didn't look overly quick or athletic. Did have TFL. * Iglesias...fast, RAC. TD * Loadholt - Should be more dominant. Didn’t start the opener because of DUI arrest. Tries to keep his feet active, but lacks the nimbleness to move smoothly in pass pro. Good down blocker when he bends his knees and really goes sticks with it. Can pull, but isn’t nimble. Too upright on some drive blocks. Effective when he extends his arms. Needs to bend his knees better/more. * Nic Harris, Lendy Holmes |

* RB Aaron Brown - Suspended for 3 games. Upright runner. Fast. Can get outside and/or downfield. Good feet, balance. Sorta skinny. Okay pass blocker. KOR ability. * WR D H-Bey - Long DT catch. Caught WR screen and used great burst to explode down the field and away from the defense. * CB B. McCain - Sloppy game. Gave up some completions. Bad tackle attempt on one pass play. * QB B. Johnson - Pocket presence? |

B. Pettigrew - Good hands. Agile, athletic. Lines up tight, but also splits out. Speed? Is quick. Tough to tackle. Inconsistent blocker. Seals well on DEs. So-so on LBs. Needs to get lower and use his hands better. Not able to lock onto defenders and sustain blocks. Effective in-line because of his size and good positioning. Has some really strong moments. Pancaked a Safety on 4th/1 run a couple of yards downfield. |
