Finally got the first mock draft of the year posted.

1. Lions - Matthew Stafford - QB - Georgia

The Lions need a lot of things. Trading the pick would probably be smart, but going after Stafford makes a lot of sense as well. He could be their franchise QB. Harrington didn't work out, but Stafford is more battle-tested coming out of college. He played in the rugged SEC and wasn't in a QB friendly offense designed to put up big numbers. That should help his adjustment to the NFL.

2. Chiefs - Andre Smith - OT - Bama

I'm sure some will question this with Branden Albert already in place. The thinking was that Smith could take over at LT. That would free up Albert to play LG or RT and the Chiefs would be on their way to having a stud OL again. Their offense has some pieces. A good OL would really help them out.

3. Bengals - Beanie Wells - RB - Ohio State

The Bengals offense was at its best when balanced between Carson Palmer throwing to Chad and TJ as well as running the ball. Wells is the big back that fits what they want to do.

4. Raiders - Malcolm Jenkins - CB - Ohio State

Fabian and Deangelo are gone. Oakland once again could use another CB to pair with Asomghua. Jenkins has the kind of ball skills to make teams pay if they throw at him.

5. Rams - Michael Crabtree - WR - Texas Tech

Donnie Avery looks like the real deal. He's a field stretcher. The Rams could use another WR to move the chains. That is Mr. Crabtree. Plus, he's excellent in the Red Zone. Torry Holt either gets a reduced role or a ticket out of town.

6. Seahawks - Knowshon Moreno - RB - Georgia

Seattle is at its best when running the ball. Julius Jones isn't the long term answer for them. Moreno is a guy you can build an offense around. And he's great on screen passes.

7. Texans - Jeremy Maclin - WR - Mizzou

Andre Johnson is a great receiver. Kevin Walter is having a nice year. Jacoby Jones has shown some potential. Still, the Texans offense is most dangerous with 2 big time threats. Maclin could put that offense over the top.

8. 49ers - Brian Orakpo - DE/LB - Texas

We don't really know what kind of defense SF will run in 2009. Orakpo is talented and versatile enough to fit in a 4-3 or 3-4. He reminds me a bit of DeMarcus Ware of Dallas.

9. Browns - Rey Maualuga - ILB - USC

Cleveland needs a jackhammer in the middle of their defense in order to deal with the running game of PIT, BAL, and CIN. Rey would be that guy.

10. Jaguars - Vontae Davis - CB - Illinois

The Jags pass defense needs someone to pair with Mathis. Davis can cover, but is also a great tackler. I could see him being a Jack Del Rio kind of player.

11. Chargers - BJ Raji - NT - Boston College

Insurance pick. Raji goes to San Diego to take over for Jamaal Williams. That defense is built on a stud NT. Jamaal is still a very good player, but he's getting up there in age.

12. Saints - Michael Johnson - DE - Ga Tech

The Saints still need defense. They have 18 sacks after 10 games. Johnson has the speed to pressure the QB.

13. Vikings - Eugene Monroe - OT - Virginia

Monroe either takes over for McKinnie at LT or Cook at RT. Eugene is a good run and pass blocker. He'd be a natural fit on a running team like the Vikings. Plus, McKinnie had the 4-game suspension already this year and I'm not sure if management is all that happy with him.

14. Bears - Darrius Heyward-Bey - WR - Maryland

Kyle Orton has proven me wrong about his QB skills. Good for him (and the Bears). Now he needs some targets. Darrius has an excellent combo of speed and size.

15. Bills - Everette Brown - DE - Fla State

The Bills are desperate for pass rushers. Everette Brown has quietly had a terrific year for the Noles.

16. Eagles - Michael Oher - OT - Ole Miss

Both Runyan and Tra Thomas are FAs. The Eagles could move Herremans to LT, but Oher would likely be too tempting to pass on.

17. Patriots - Brian Cushing - LB - USC

Cushing to the Pats? Could they go young LB again? I think so. Cushing is the kind of versatile guy they love. He can play OLB or ILB. He can play the run, cover, and rush the passer. He's not just a blitzer, though. Brian knows how to get to the QB.

18. Dolphins - DJ Moore - CB - Vandy

Miami could use a playmaking CB. Moore has excellent ball skills and he is very athletic.

19. Lions (f/Dal) - Taylor Mays - S - USC

The Lions need help in the middle of that defense. Mays would give them a tough, fast player to clean up messes left by the front seven. Go back and watch Deangelo Williams TD run from last week and you'll see what I mean.

20. Falcons - Brandon Pettigrew - TE - Oklahoma State

Matt Ryan was a great pick. He's got some good players around him, but one thing he needs is a TE. Pettigrew can block and catch, making him a perfect fit for their style of offense.

21. Redskins - Tyson Jackson - DE - LSU

Washington has preferred big DL over the years. Jackson at 6'5, 290 is a big DE. He has some pass rush ability as well.

22. Ravens - Percy Harvin - WR - Florida

Baltimore needs offensive weapons. Harvin is a receiver, but must be used creatively to maximize his skills. Cam Cameron was Antwaan Randle-El's coach at Indiana, so he's had success with multi-talented players before.

23. Colts - Peria Jerry - DT - Ole Miss

The Colts are desperate for DT help. Just so happens that Jerry is a perfect fit for their scheme.

24. Broncos - Brandon Spikes - MLB - Florida

Spikes reminds me of Al Wilson, who was really good for Denver for a long time.

25. Packers - James Laurinaitis - MLB - Ohio State

This may seem low for Laurinaitis, but he's caught in a good class of LBs. I think he could play MLB or OLB. AJ Hawk is in the middle now for the Packers, but they could move him back to the weakside.

26. Jets - Aaron Curry - ILB - Wake Forest

Put him with David Harris and the Jets have a pair of stud ILBs for a long time.

27. Cardinals - Greg Hardy - DE/LB - Ole Miss

Greg slid because of injuries. ARZ has a good set of DL/LBs, but they have several old guys. Hardy at 6'5, 255 is interesting. He can slide out and play LB in their 3-4 looks. He could add bulk and be a 275-lb DE for them as well. They like pass rushers and Greg can do that.

28. Buccaneers - Alphonso Smith - CB - Wake Forest

Smith is ready to take over for Ronde as the playmaking CB. Aqib Talib can be Brian Kelly.

29. Steelers - Tyronne Green - G - Auburn

Pittsburgh has to get better up front. Big Ben needs time to throw the ball.

30. Eagles (f/Car) - William Moore - S - Mizzou

The Eagles are slow at Safety. Moore can play either spot. He is big enough to play SS, but skilled and athletic enough to play FS. They need more speed and coverage ability in the middle of the defense.

31. Titans - Ron Brace - DT - Boston College

The Titans loaded up on DEs last year. I think adding a DT this year would be smart. Haynesworth is dominant, but god forbid he gets hurt.

32. Giants - Hakeem Nicks - WR - UNC

The Giants didn't have glaring holes, but needed some help in several areas. Burress is a talented headache. Toomer is getting up there. Sinorice Moss looks like a bust at this point. Steve Smith is a complimentary type WR. Manningham is a question because we haven't seen enough from him. Nicks is big, fast, and talented. He'd be perfect for their style of offense.

MATT - Post NFC-CG

Detroit – Matthew Stafford, QB Georgia

You can’t pass up a player at the quarterback position with Stafford’s ability. He shows signs of greatness and could develop into a premium franchise quarterback.

St. Louis – Andre Smith, OT Alabama

Talk is already circulating that every single offensive lineman in St. Louis could be out of their spots in the offseason. Add that to Orlando Pace’s age and it’s time for a new offensive tackle. Crabtree would be interesting too.

Kansas City – Malcolm Jenkins, CB Ohio State

An argument could be made for a number of players here, but there is no cornerback close to Malcolm Jenkins in this draft and the Chiefs need help in the secondary badly.

Seattle – Michael Crabtree, WR Texas Tech

Wide receiver is probably the biggest need for the Seahawks going into the postseason and Crabtree is easily the best in the draft.

Cleveland – Beanie Wells, RB Ohio State

While an outside linebacker to replace Willie McGinest would be ideal here, there is no one on the board worth the pick. It may be a bit early for Wells here, but he does fit their style of a bruising running back for the AFC North.

Cincinnati – Aaron Curry, OLB Wake Forest

Curry comes in and starts from day one for a linebacker corps that has been in disarray for years now.

Oakland – Jeremy Maclin, WR Missouri

While Maclin may not be worth a pick this high, we’ve seen many times that Al Davis goes for speed and playmakers in the draft. You could see this year that JaMarcus Russell was leaning away from Ronald Curry in the passing game.

Jacksonville – B.J. Raji, DT Boston College

The Jags lost one of their big two at defensive tackle in Marcus Stroud last season and John Henderson isn’t getting any younger. Raji would be a great fit for their defensive line.

Green Bay – Eugene Monroe, OT Virginia

Reports out of Green Bay are that Breno Giacomini will be in competition for the right tackle position next year with Mark Tauscher. Breno is a kid we liked with some upside, but Monroe is a much better player.

San Francisco – Brian Orakpo, OLB Texas

The Niners need a pass rusher and have gone as far to make it public that they’ll go into the draft with that being their first priority. Orakpo has a ton of athletic ability and can stand up to play in the 3-4.

Buffalo – Everette Brown, DE Florida State

The Bills need a defensive end and Brown is the best of the bunch for a 4-3 team.

Denver – Brandon Spikes, MLB Florida

Denver has been searching for an answer at middle linebacker for a few years now and find one in Spikes.

Washington – Michael Oher, OT Ole Miss

Washington isn’t getting any younger or any healthier at either tackle position and it’s about time to address the situation if they want to pick for the future.

New Orleans – Knowshon Moreno, RB Georgia

The Saints are in cap hell this season as they spent big over the past few years for players like Brees, Deuce and McKenzie. McAllister could easily be a cap casualty and we’ve seen Sean Payton likes his offense stockpiled.

Houston – William Moore, S Missouri

The Texans haven’t had a safety as talented as Moore since the franchise started and playing against the Colts every year their secondary has to to continue to improve. They could also look defensive end here.

San Diego – Brian Cushing, OLB USC

San Diego seems to have inside and outside linebackers getting suspended, arrested or injured every year, so a player with Cushing’s flexibility should be intriguing to them.

N.Y. Jets – Josh Freeman, QB Kansas State

The Jets drafted Kellen Clemens years ago, however they felt the need to trade a 3rd round pick for Brett Favre in the offseason. If you have the chance to get a franchise quarterback you go for him.

Chicago – Michael Johnson, DE Georgia Tech

Ugunleye is entering the final year of his contract and the Bears starting defensive ends combined for 14.5 sacks this year. Wide receiver and Peria Jerry were also considered here.
