Record 7-2

Atalanta's General Manager (Allen) will talk with TNT's very own Kenny "The Jet" Smith on how he turned this team to what it is.

KS: Ok, a lot of people are wondering how you put the Atlanta Hawks of all teams to be the #1 team in the Eastern Conference. Lets start of with Free Agency and what your thoughts were going into FA, who you were going after etc.

Allen: Well i had about 3 mil in cap and i figured i wouldn't be able to do much with that so i ended up amnesty cutting Mike Bibby since i didn't really have any bad contracts which put me at 17 mil about. My thoughts were to try and get 2 great players to build around my team alongside Al Horford and Joe Johnson. It was obvious who i wanted, Emeka so i quickly just offered him MAX and he accept which like me back to about 3 mil again. But before FA even started he waived Marvin Williams and Speedy Claxton to get about 11 mil more in cap space to get who i wanted, Gerald Wallace. I ended up just offering him MAX also, because why not just go balls out for him, what do i got to lose im not even close to hard cap and id rather give him the more money and have him then save money and not have anyone.

KS: SO you ended up with Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace, sounds like you were one of the winners in FA, but how come you didn't go after Josh Smith?

Allen: I thought about it, and i needed another scorer that i could depend on because Horford is not really a go-to guy at the time i had JJ and Emeka so i needed another scorer that i could depend on. Wallace has the inside outside game very well balanced where as Smith only really has a inside game.

KS: Tell us about what Emeka brings to your team.

Emeka Okafor brings something to this Atlanta Franchise that they have not had in a very long time a inside presence. He is currently averaging 18ppg 11.5 rpg and 2bpg which is exactly what we want him to do, and he is shooting at a high percentage. We don't want Emeka throwing up 20 shots a night like some teams may want him to do and i think he knows that and what his role is on this team. He anchors our defense and shows people how much you can have an inpact on the game if you just play defense, because if you play defense it will lead to offense, hence the 18ppg.

KS: What about your other FA, Gerald Wallace, why you chose him and what he does for this team.

Just like Emeka he brings Defense to this team and like they say offense wins games defense wins championships. It is very rare in this league to find a player that plays hard defense and scores the ball like Wallace can. He feeds off of his defense, currently averaging 2spg. He can stretch the defense out a lot because of his ability to shoot the 3 ball good and he is a slasher which leads not only to points but assists also. He is our lock-down defender when we play teams that have like a Lebron or Kobe, i think that is why he are winning our games not because we can blow out the other team, even though we have the power to do so, but because we play defense as a team.

KS: In the first 10 days of the NBA Season you went 7-2 defeating good teams and had very close in your loses, tell us how your team preforms so well.

Allen: It's all about the players you have, we have our go-to scorer in Joe Johnson who is averaging a monster 25ppg while shooting 50% from the field. Emeka and Wallace who are averaging around 18ppg along with 2bpg and 2spg, Horford who along with Emeka is averaging a double double, and we just have unselfish guys on our team. Having out best scorer as our PG really works our because he brings the ball up and is almost forced to pass the ball and gives other players on our team opportunities to score. Normally the best player is SG or PF and they get it and go 1on1 but here JJ is averaging 10apg which is very key to this team's success. And we have a veteran bench also that knows how to play, Erick Dampier who is in there to rebound and defend and he is doing just that, Anthony Johnson who is in there running the show while JJ cools down. Zaza who is capable of playing SG to hell i didn't even realize he was playing SG but must have been doing a good job hah. Evans who is a solid defender and a unselfish player, we got it all this team is built to win

KS: Your SG spot is currently your "weak" spot right now, and your bench could use a bit more fire power, what are you going to do about that?

Allen: Well we just claimed Jamal Crawford off of waivers which is a great deal because he has good defense and can score the ball so he has a great 1, 2 punch on both ends of the floor. Also Crawford is an experienced player and is not afraid to take a game winning shot if it is open we just like his confidence and think he is worth it. We also claimed 2 more players off of waivers for very cheap, Chirs Duhon and Vladimir Radmonovic, 2 players that can help this team tremendously. Duhon can run the show better than Johnson can because he is young and quick and can keep up with our up-tempo offense so we got a good back-up PG there. Vladimir will be playing PF for us and will give us a great 3 point threat off the bench when JJ, Crawford, and Wallace and cutting to the hole. The hawks love the position they are in right now and only sees bright things for the future.

KS: Well it was great talking to you and I hope your team does well and stays healthy for the rest of the season.

Allen: Thanks, you probably will be hearing from the Hawks again later in the season with an update on how the team is doing.
