![]() We are very lucky to have Dwight Howard here with us, the Magic's superstar. We sat down with him and asked him a couple of questions. St. Pete Times: You were great at rebounding, blocking shots, and scoring last season, do you think you will be able to maintain these areas for the 2008-09 season? Dwight Howard: Well, I'm hoping, I had a great season in 08, and I am really practicing and trying to get better for each aspect of the game. I averaged a lot of rebounds per game last year [14] and I look to keep the number in double digits. Also, Hedo and I are going to be the scoring duo this season, with Rashard Lewis getting old. I look to keep up my average and get at least 20 points per game if not more. I was notified I am the franchise player, so I am going to practice hard and keep up, and improve in all the aspects you asked about, and every part of the game in general. ![]() The scoring duo are also best friends! SPT: Have you done anything this summer to work on your game? DH: Well, in my summer home, I have a built in indoor basketball court, so about 4 or 5 times a week I would go into the gym with my personal trainer and work on fundamentals, then we would also go work out in the weight lifting gym. However, in my own time I worked on my turn around jumpers, passing, free throws, and jump shots. I would go out to the basketball court at about noon, work with my trainer for about three hours, have lunch, then in the evening about 5 or 6 I would go into the court and work on shooting for hours, there have been days I haven't came back in those house until 11 at night. If I am not shooting well, instead of saying "that's enough" I figure out what I'm doing wrong and work on it. Often, I have teammates stop by and work on their game with me. I would see by good pal Hedo about two or three times every week. From all this summer practicing, not to mention practicing and playing with the Olympics team I imagine I had to have improved on my game. SPT: Who is your personal trainer? DH: My personal trainer is my high school coach, Tim Johns, he played high school basketball and played college basketball for two years. He wasn't the best basketball player, but with his athletic ability he wouldn't just be able to help me practice he would also allow my to get into the best shape of my life to play. He actually wasn't my trainer the first year I played in the NBA, Jameer and I shared a trainer together, then when I heard Tim resigned from his job, we discussed it and it was a great choice, so this is the fourth year we will be together and hopefully the best years are still to come. SPT: Do you expect your team to win a lot this year? DH: I think we have one of the best teams. Everyone in our line up can play, and we made the playoffs last year, except everyone has improved, and we acquired Knicks shooting guard Jamal Crawford. We are also a fairly young team, well some of us, so we don't just look to be good now, we want to be good in the future as well. However, as Rashard's career coming to the close, we want to have a great season this year, and we think this can be Orlando's year. I can't wait to start practicing this year because I have a feeling we will all work great together and hopefully achieve some great goals during the season. ![]() Take out Keith Bogans, put him as the sixth man, and put Jamal Crawford in this picture, and we have a great team. SPT: You guys are a very fast team, do you like that? DH: That is what basketball is. Basketball isn't a sport you sit around, don't run a lot, the object is to beat the other team, and to do that, you got to beat them on fast breaks, and out hustle them. If you can do that and bust it every day you will see good results. Now, we bust it in the game. However, the reason we do that, is in practice, we absolutely bust our asses the whole way through, Tony Battie wasn't hustling one day, and our coaching staff doesn't put up with this shit, the next day, he was released. So we are big into running and busting our asses out there. As most people can see it pays off big time. SPT: Will you ever win the MVP award? DH: That would be amazing. You never know. It is possible, but there are so many great players out there, I'm just one of those young ones, but there is Kobe, LeBron, Dirk, there are many stars out there and it would be great to win it, but there are better players then me out there. ![]() He is superman, how does he not win MVP? SPT: Thanks for time Dwight, good luck this season. DH: Thanks for having me, and to all the people that read this in Florida, I guarantee the Magic will make the playoffs. SPT: I wouldn't doubt it. DH: Haha, who has an interview and doesn't make a guarantee these days? SPT: No one, that's the answer, well good luck. DH: Thanks, appreciate it. |
