Knicks Clear Cap

AP - - - - The NEW YORK KNICKS rebuilding process has begun. With one eye on the salary cap and another on stockpiling draft picks, the Knicks have traded troubled power foward, Zach Randolph to Cleveland. Going along with Randolph to the Cavs are recently signed guard Chris Duhon, Quentin Richardson, and the igmatic Jerome James. In exhange the Knickerbockers will recieve in total, roughly, $35,000,000 in expiring contracts, as well as a 2nd round pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. New York recieved Wally Szczerbiak, Anderson Varejao, Damon Jones, Eric Snow, and Joe Smith. Smith, Jones, and Snow all have already been waived and we can expect the same for Wally and Varejao in the near future.

Randolph, the 6 - foot - 9 foward has brought nothing but negativity to the Knicks since he was aquired last June by former GM, Isiah Thomas. Zach was an aqusition that was always questioned by many, including certain Knick players. Randolph has tons of skill, but he just never fit in along side Eddy Curry. In a brief interview with Zach as he boarded the plane to Cleveland he had this to say: "Thank god. That franchise is a joke. I couldn't be any happier. Sure the city was great, but now I get to go to Cleveland and play alongside a MVP type player in LeBron [James]. Were going to do some special things down there. Just watch."

Maybe a change of scenery is what both parties needed.

When current Knicks president and general manager, Mike Sargolini caught wind of what his former power foward said, of course Mike responded. "Zachs got all the talent in the world. He just doesn't know how to use it. Its a shame that he had to go down to that level and disrespect this franchise like that. Thats not the way we do things here, and thats part of the reason why he is not wearing orange and blue anymore. I wish Zach and the rest of the players the best."

The Knicks will continue to reshape this roster. Expect more changes before the start of the season. "This is just the beginning. It's a long long process, but this is the first step for us", said Sargolini.

This deal now opens up minutes for second year player, Wilson Chandler and Italian rookie, Danilo Gallinari. Chandler appeared in 35 games for New York kast season, averging 7.3 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game. The Knicks are very high on both players. When Sargolini was asked about these two, "These are our guys. Were going into battle with them and im very confident in their abilities." Veteran Jamal Crawford also has been very impressed by the two youngsters so far in practice. "Their good, real good. I don't think I could do the stuff they do when I was their age (laughing). The key thing is Wilson and Danilo both feel like they belong here, which is key."
