OKC Franchise Receives New Faces The franchise formerly known as the Sonics has been pretty busy lately. In the past couple weeks, the team has officially made it's move to Oklahoma City from Seattle. But that's not the only major move the team has recently undergone. The first change the freshly relocated franchise went through was selecting its name. Their chooses were narrowed down between the Thunder, Wind, Bison, or Barons before the final selection was made. In the end, the organization felt that the Oklahoma City Barons was the best choice. ![]() Along with the new name, obviously a new logo and jerseys are next to follow. They were finally revealed to the public last week after much anticipation. Feedback from the players and fans has been better than even expected. Kevin Durant, last season's Rookie of the Year, was the first to let his feelings be known. "Since I first saw them, I've been pretty impressed. The final production models are pretty nice. They really have a unique feel to them, and I think they fit in with the southern theme". ![]() Durant won't be the only superstar dawning the new uniform when the season opens in one month. In the first trade of the Oklahoma City era, they made a splash. The Barons traded 2nd year player Jeff Green, rookie Russell Westbrook, guard Earl Watson, big man Nick Collison, expiring contracts, and a future 1st round pick to the Denver Nuggets for Team USA star Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin. Martin was then immediately cut by Oklahoma City with no cap ramifications. ![]() Former Spurs Assistant General Manager and 2nd-year Baron's General Manager Sam Presti lead the press conference. "It was a tough trade to pull the trigger on. We obviously felt pretty strongly about Russell (Westbrook) and Jeff (Green), recently spending a top-5 draft pick on each of them. You have to strike when a player like Carmelo becomes available though. He has had a controversial past, but pairing him up with Kevin (Durant) at such young ages should make for one hell of a scoring duo for the next decade. Also, this trade frees up over $15 million in cap room immediately, which was huge for us. There are still a few big name free agents out there, and hopefully we can land one or two of them" Free agents still available include former dunk champion Josh Smith, guard Ben Gordon, Emeka Okafor, Ray Felton, and Jason Richardson, to name a few. The crop is filled with youth at pretty much every position, along with some vets that are sure to be significant role players in the next few seasons. ![]() Depending on how free agency plays out, the Barons are expected to keep active on the phone lines. They currently have less than the required number of players on their roster and have over $20 million in cap space. Presti has made it been known that anyone on the roster, excluding Durant and Carmelo, is available in a trade. [redit][/redit] Edited by DJC, Aug 7 2008, 07:50 PM.
