So for maybe the past two seasons I've been keeping up with stuff as it airs from Japan. Right now I'm wathcing Mawaru Penguindrum, Mirai Nikki, Shinryaku Ika Musume, Ben-to, and have seen Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere too.

I have slowly realized I like slice-of-life comedy anime. Which my girlfriend Liz informs me is maybe the most embarassing genre of anime to like. Some of my favorites of the last few seasons are Mitsudomoe and Nichijou, which are both fucking hilarious. I also really loved Madoka while it was airing.

To tell the truth though I'm pretty ill-informed of the big anime: One Piece, Bleach, Naruto. Constant exposure to the fanbase has kind of left me with a bad taste in my mouth regarding them. Which speaks nothing to how good they themselves may be. Things get popular and then get terrible fans, that's always the case.

tl;dr

Talk about some goddamn animes you like/are watching at present.

1999 Hunter X Hunter opening

Well, of the popularish shonen boys fighting anime, Hunter X Hunter has a pretty gentlemenly quiet fanbase of diehard fans. I keep saying I'll do more fan art to promote it more among the anime watchers in our community. With the 2011 reboot (its in this seasons lineup) a new flock of fans will hopefully give it a chance so I'll take this opportunity to put my money where my mouth is.

2011 Hunter X Hunter Ending (catchy)

The new show is pretty cool and friendly to new comers who don't like 90s traditional cel painted animation, and runs at a quicker brisker pace even (it's only on episode 4 so far). It's about a boy trying to pursue the career that made his father abandon him.

I'm also watching Persona 4 the anime which is also pretty cool, I'm not at all familiar with the games, but it is all very JoJo's Bizarre Adventure part 4 (kids with stands unraveling a serial killers murders or something) mixed with a bit of traditional J rpg elements. The music so far is really awesome along with its production values.

I can't say I adore slice of life comedy anime but its always been probably the most charming genre to me Matt. They're easily the most approachable to the non anime fan who doesn't want complicated convoluted stories about people with powers from crazy dimensions. This is why I was so big into Slam Dunk and any other macho sports manga I've read so far.

Speaking of which we need a comics and manga thread.

I linked the endings, but you should be discussing such anime or why you like it not just linking opening themes, we have the link thread for that debulover. Sorry if that wasn't made clearer.

Feel free to edit and discuss the shows quality, what you're watching etc in this thread.

I only watch old anime, I don't care much at all for the new stuff. Still need to finish City Hunter, and I was gonna re-watch all of the original Dragon Ball, and I got a few episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho left over to re-watch, and then I got the Trigun collection which I haven't even opened yet. Far as new shit goes, I am anticipating a new season or OVA for Hajime no Ippo. I want to see Coach Kamogawa's past as a prize fighter, the Sawamura fight, and Aoki's title match. Takamura vs David Eagle would be good too.

This is the only show I'm really following right now. I never actually played the game, but I watched the infamous "Endurance Run" Giant Bomb did a while back. I love how they blended elements from the game (the calender system, the stats screen, the battle music) into the show.

I don't watch anime too often, but I do enjoy watching an episode or two of Cowboy Bebop, Ranma 1/2, Lupin III, Shin Chan, Panty & Stocking, or some old school Toonami stuff every once in a while.

I'm maining Durarara on Adult Swim and trying to watch all the episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood that I missed While occasionally watching an episode of Soul Eater on Funimations Youtube page.

Durarara is...I don't know how to explain it...it has crowning moments of awesome but it's a little dull to me at random moments...I don't know if it's all the mystery or if after seeing a man get punched so hard his clothes fly off makes all the talking seem bleh.

If you liked the first version of Fullmetal, this one makes it look like complete and utter shit, AAA story and action.

I still need to watch the second half of the final episode of Mitsudomoe too, it made me sad when I realized there wasn't gonna be any more fights.

I've been meaning to check out Danball Senki and I hope to god there is a anime for Read or Die-R down the line.

I was seriously kind of depressed when Mitsudomoe came to an abrupt end. Siiiggghhh....

I think I had a similar experience with Durarara. There's nothing particularly bad, but some of the pacing is pretty slow, not sure how deliberate that is. It's a pretty manic show, I haven't managed to convince myself to care enough to finish it. I think I'm around six or seven eps in.

Why do you watch that rubbish.

That's not anime.

You need some... MANIME.

Go watch some Hajime no Ippo right now.

How the fuck did the ponies get Running Wild?!

From what I've seen, the Wolverine anime isn't bad but that voice and thin body....
Also, has anyone seen Hyakko or Majikoi - Oh! Samurai Girls?

And KD, there is always hope that it'll follow the usual Japanese trend of making a second series, I just hope that if it happens, it doesn't end up being what people think it is.

I tend to find action-y anime boring, Wild.

I like comedies. Zetsubou sensei, Nichijou, Mitsudomoe, that ilk.

I guess vaguely comical philosophy bullshit like the Tatami Galaxy is good too.

I did like Cowboy Bebop back in the day, though.

I watched about three episodes of the Wolverine anime and it didn't seem very good. There's a certain complexity to his character that shines best in a team setting, I think. I did like the X-Men anime though, I think they did a pretty good job giving nods to the source material while doing its own thing.

It's not action. It's sports.

And comedy.

And slice of life.

With plenty of... BROMANCE.

Nichijou, Mitsudomoe, and all that stuff... I wouldn't be caught dead watching that sort of thing. I tried to watch a episode of each and I could feel my brain cells melting.

You want comedy anime? GOLDEN BOY. That is the funniest anime ever.

That and Ogenki Clinic and Duchess Of Busty Mounds.

And Samurai Fantasy.

I've had a varied taste of anime for the most part; classic 90s anime like Cowboy Bebop, the Tenchi series, Rurouni Kenshin, Big O hold a special place in my heart as a child of Toonami. As for recent anime, D. Gray Man was a very well-done one for me, even if it cut off too shortly since the manga is still going strong. Still, I highly recommend it if you want a good actiony/shoen/macabre series.

I've also been curious about Madoka Magica for a next possible anime to watch, anyone here seen it's chthulu-esque horrors yet?

Sports anime are pretty hipster izlude, they probably never heard of it. *brofist for sports manga/anime* because I'd rather watch cartoons do it then get off my own lazy ass. In all seriousness though, it's always been near impossible to interest any english speaking anime fan in sports related fiction be it movies or anime. But I've always found them very inspiring and uplifting for when I feel I need to get motivated. It's macho man drama at its best.

In terms of manga is anyone reading anything interesting? Grim-Kun has me interested in reading Kongo Banchou a highschool delinquent tough guy manga with art that reminds me of Dragon ball and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (probably the best shonen series after Hunter X Hunter for my money)

Airmaster will always have a place in my heart but I will always be super pissed that it ended so fucking soon with no chance of something new coming out. There series itself was a little all over the place but it had big boobie girl, lotta fighting, and funny moments. I don't really care for the eye style though and I remember seeing a video with a different animation style for the beginning but I can't find it anymore so I think it may have been a dream.

WARNING OPINION ALERT

PMMM is pretty boring, yo.

Well, not really for some parts, but other parts are terribad. It feels like a show that has amazing production value and complexity for 5 minutes, then there has to be 20 minutes of shitty filler to occupy time so it can be called a "show."

I shoveled 3 episodes of it. The crazy sequences in each were entertaining as all hell, but the 20 minute "schoolgirl life" unfunny monotonous bullshit used to build to it left me cringing in disgust.

Most people I know/knew that said Madoka was thoroughly interesting also admit to hating the parts I hated, unless they're those kinda creepy 30-year-old types who enjoy staring at little girls being friends in middle school.....

I wouldn't call it cthulhu-esque. It's just slightly creepy cutesy shit that isn't really creepy at all.

Anime I highly prefer though, would be hot-blooded action anime, but really I'll take what I can get. My recommended list includes Kemonozume, TTGL, Michiko to Hatchin, Bakemonogatari (alongside Zetsubou Sensei of course), and hell I got caught up on something and can't remember what else, happy halloween folks

Kongoh Banchou is pretty amazing, yeah. I got into it a while ago, need to get back to it and catch up again.

Lately, as many people in TAD's artstreams should know, I've been getting into the old stuff, namely Dragon Ball. I finished up the whole first series, and now I'm watching the Android/Cell sagas of Z in preparation for watching Buu saga. Watching the original, subbed and uncut versions since although I saw Dragon Ball Kai, they didn't do the Buu saga so I want to see the whole thing undubbed.

As for newer anime, the main one I've been keeping tabs on is Toriko. Which is about a super-powered JoJo-looking badass named Toriko who hunts down super rare and deadly monsters so he can kill and eat them because they are fucking delicious. I like the manga more than the anime, though, because, well, the manga gets pretty brutal with the fighting and violence, and the anime has to tone it down a LOT. There's also sadly very few female characters in it, and considering it's an anime focused entirely around eating, that's quite a tragedy since I'll probably never see any good fatty girl fanart for it. There just isn't anyone to make it of! There's like two girls, one of them an anime-only character who's entirely superfluous.

I've seen the first 10 episodes already, it starts slow (which I'm generally used to with Shonen anime, but it was starting to pick up towards the end, I liked the animation and music especially. What sold me on the series was the clip with Takemura? (the trainer) vs the bear. Probably still one of the manliest scenes in anime. I'll let you know once I start reading the manga version in the manga thread.

No, the series sucked IMO. Mainly due to the 15 minutes of angle and projection explaination, only for a single swing.

But to be fair, they were badass summons in JUS.

lol no.

The kind of sports mango I read are about combat sports. Boxing, MMA, karate.

Although I was reading Mr.Fullswing, a pretty tight baseball comedy mango, and Umisho, which was about swimming.

One thing I've noticed and struggled with in anime is that stuff that is clearly meant to focus on pervy stuff) actually has a PLOT that becomes engaging for me. I'm not talking about porn/hentai, but stuff like Seikon no Qwaser or Manyuu Hikenchou that sneaks into that 'not porn/heavily censored except on the DVD release' category. Ecchi? I don't know what the japanese term for it would be. Either way, it's hard to reconcile sometimes because I'm like "Dammit! I would reccomend this anime to normal friends if it was about vampires or some shit and not people sucking on boobs for power, but I can't do that because just a summary or quick glance makes it look like perverted schlock! WHY IS THIS ANIME MAKING ME UPSET THAT IT HAS BOOBS IN IT?! HOW DOES IT DO THAT?!"

Kenichi looks really gross

like I have this acquaintance who would say it's the best ever

and he'd link me youtube vids of the best fights

and they looked really fucking bad, like low-budget typical anime crap

and it's unfair how I told him to watch Michiko to Hatchin, Bakemonogatari, and Lupin the 3rd, and also read Grappler Baki, and now he loves all that shit because those are actually GOOD

but I'm here disgusted that he recommended Kenichi and AngelBeats! to me. GOD those were so BAD, GUGHGHHGHG

Soul Eater was good though! I really digged that shit back when it was first coming out! Didn't like how BlackStar became a gigantic naruto ripoff fucking prick that ruins everything, though. But the other characters and aesthetics and fight scenes were all good fun!
