yes, well, of course i understand why you thought you saw the word "happy" in that! he spoke of being loved and having a lot of family to enjoy time with. of course, "enjoyment" implies "happiness" (actually, it's essentially the same thing) but that's just it: he did NOT say that one WOULD enjoy the life! the only thing he said was that you would HAVE family TO enjoy. Of course, he couldn't have said you would enjoy that! It's entirely subjective! Most probably would be happy to have a lot of family, be loved and love back, etc... But not everyone is the same!

yes, i'm aware of the origins of the word "philosopher". i didn't know the actual original greek words, but i knew that the word essentially means "lover of wisdom". what we love, makes us happy. he was a lover of wisdom, so, naturally, he believed more wisdom would make us happier. that's a perfectly understandable belief he would have. but i think that wiser people should look more at the universal experience rather than personal points. what do all people share? there probably isn't a lot...

I'd like to read the ancient Greek philosophers someday, I think I'd enjoy them. :)

i've come across various quotes from not just plato, but the other two major ancient greek philosophers as well. i usually always either strongly agree, or strongly disagree! i think it'd be good for bouncing ideas off of. we shouldn't read only things we agree with. :)

Agreed. I've read several things I haven't always totally agreed with. I tend to be neutral in my beliefs, never very radical at all. Nietzsche was interesting, and so was Darwin, but I didn't get into them that much. Gandhi reminded me of Plato, of course. I didn't like De Beauvoir very much at all, which most find weird since I'm female and she was a feminist. /shrug.
It's all subjective.

finding it hilarious how much people got into my quote ^^'

thought this was a would you rather spot, but hell people go off all the time.

Since no one else has answered it - I'll choose to forget everyone while they still remember me.
I'd rather relearn the relationships I had then have to endure the pain and heavy waiting of having to hold yourself back especially if it is a loved one.

At least I'd be remembered, even if I didn't remember.
Wow, long post for just this.

But anyway...

Speak only from the mind at all times,

or

Speak only from the heart.

Willing to bet most would say heart... but since I never was able to speak with the heart... this might be interesting.

Well... I spoke from the heart via instruments.

But I mean by both actions and voice - just for clarifications.

I was thinking of suggesting to create a new thread for discussion of Plato and happiness and such things, but I don't know if there would be much to say on that or not...

translucent - hell I could hide in plain sight :D

would you rather be forced to watch non-stop really bad kid shows or be forced extremely poor acting shows from when the first tvs came out?

kids shows, totally. do you know how easy and full of fun it is to make fun of/create memories of/create inside jokes of creepy children's shows at three or four in the morning with your friends?
boobah. . . /shudder.

and by transluscent, i meant only your skin. you'd be able to see muscles and bone and whatnot.

ducks or geese?
