Many things - be nice to be great in one field, but I might get bored after a while.

Live long, wise but hated and no family to pass on....

or fairly short life, ignorant yet loved and many of family to enjoy your limited time with

ignorant, happy and loved.
though Plato might say that your question is moot because there is no happiness without wisdom . . . can i be happy and smart?

would you rather forget everyone you ever knew or have everyone forget you?

well, actually, wiseowl's question did NOT say "happy", that is up for interpretation. would being loved make you happy? perhaps. but couldn't other things make one happy as well? a very wise friend of mine once told me that we should not rely upon others for our happiness. :)

would plato say that? i'm not familiar with his writings, but based upon that, he doesn't seem very wise to me... it is an observable fact that different people gain joy from various things. who is "wise"? personally, i think there is more happiness amongst the common folk. though, i think very highly of wisdom and knowledge. the more we know, the more good we may do in the world. life is not all about ourselves. we may only live on through the influence we pass on to others...

oh, and i'll just leave that question to someone else. i have no idea! i'd much rather commit suicide than do either!

According to what I've read of Plato (Symposium, Apology, etc), his philosophy was just that; philosophy. The word "philosophy" comes from the Greek root philo- which comes from philein, which means "love". The "sophy" part comes from the Greek "sophia", which means "wisdom". According to Plato, a person should strive to achieve Wisdom, the highest form of knowledge. From the attainment of Wisdom would come the highest form of happiness. A person who is ignorant is happy in their ignorance, yes; Plato didn't say that person was unhappy, he merely said that with more knowledge comes more happiness.
I'm not sure if I agree with that; just spouting off some Plato. :]

One could also argue that happiness is relative, as well. Perhaps some people might not be happy being surrounded by those they love. I misread the question, apparently; I thought I saw the word "happy" in there somewhere. Freudian slip?
