In the seasons long before Salamandastron was tamed by Lord Brocktree, Mossflower was a wild and nearly lawless place to live. The badger rulers rarely lived in the forest, usually traveling in the far wild-lands or battling distant hordes of vermin. So the forest dwellers were forced to fend for themselves against smaller, roaming bands and corsair ships which sailed up the River Moss. Hoping to end the fear the elderly and defenseless lived in, a group of seventeen young warriors from all parts of the forest gathered together to form a type of militia, protecting their friends, family, and neighbors when needed, but able to provide for themselves. They called themselves the Mossguard.
As their success gradually built up, their numbers increased as well. Eventually they built themselves a simple fort on the riverbank at its shallowest point. Seasons passed before they built a bridge, at first of wood, and then later stone, to make crossing the river easier for travelers. A trail wore out to and from this bridge, which became something of a highway for the beasts of Mossflower. With the increased travel to and through Mossguard, the fort was strengthened, and a building added on the other side of the bridge, creating a symmetrical fortress.
Warriors began to actually live there, and brought their families with them. Skilled craftsbeasts, such as coopers, smiths, even cooks found work in the fortress. Even beyond the money they made from the beasts living there, they found business from the many creatures who used the bridge and path to cross. Among the new habitants were numerous otters, who, after many years, gradually intermarried and melded into one holt: Holt Mossguard. Their blood still runs in the High Rhulain and the otters at the river mouth. Soon enough Mossguard was not only protection for Mossflower; it was a center of activity.
Unfortunately, Mossguard’s success was its undoing. Its reputation preceded it to the vermin of the land, and raiding bands and corsairs became infrequent, and were easily dealt with. Finally it lost use as warriors moved away. Bit by bit, Mossguard died.
In the Autumn of the Early Chill, a series of enormous storms wrought heavy damage on the shell of the fortress. Though it was in great disrepair, nobeast even began to fix it until the following spring. At that time, however, the effects of the miserable weather in the previous two seasons displayed themselves. An enormous flash-flood swept over the River Moss, sweeping the semi-ruins of Mossguard into the river. There they crumbled over time, creating a shallow spot in the River Moss, right along the path. (That is now the Ford.)

Welcome to Mossguard in its golden age!
