Inspired by Jonny 'The Fuzz' Vaughan's review I decided to give my thoughts on the latest Indiana Jones film. And I think that is what it is. It is certainly a new Indy. It is different, it couldn't not be but I always thought the original 3 were very different anyway. While the first 3 were set in the 30s are homaged 30s adventure films this is set in the 50s and so is inspired by 50s Monster B-Movies. And it works. Harrison Ford is old and looks it but it is addressed really well. He is meant to be an old man and Shia's character, Mutt Williams plays off Indy really well. They work together like Connery and Ford did in the Last Crusade. Bringing back Marrion has some plot significance but she hardly does anything. In fact, most of the secondary characters other than Indy, Mutt and I guess Cate Blanchett's bizarre, Russian villain do very little - yet they're played by huge screen icons like John Hurt. It is a bit odd. And yes, odd is a good way to explain a lot of this film. It is a great adventure film but, especially towards the end, the storyline marks the melting Nazi's, removal of the heart and the hundreds of years old crusader in the first three films seem perfectly normal. I guess they felt they needed to top the first three, but it is ... I don't even know. It is hard to judge. I guess you just have to see it. I mean, I really liked the ending, but I still they could have made it a bit more mysterious rather than just in your face... But it ticked all my Indy boxes - 1) Insects and lots of them. I never thought ants were that bad but oooooo 2) Chase sequences. Wow, almost every second was a chase. Some were more successful than others. And really, not so much CGI was needed. 3) A supernatural death ala melting, or growing really old. Yup, in there. It was alright I guess. Basically, it could have been a whole lot worse and I like it more than Temple of Doom. It is different but it fits in with the others well and I personally wouldn't be against a 5th one. (Indiana Jones and the Valley of the Dinosaurs? :D) 4/5 A high 4. (Best bit - When Indy escapes the Russians at the starts and arrives in a seemingly pleasant American suburb. I won't spoil what happens, but it is the tensest bit in an Indy film yet. Genuinely scary / hilarious) |

An Indie Indy then? that's crap, but again... Couldn't waste the opportunity.I'm watching this tonight in a cinema with reclining chairs and food on order! ![]() I've heard good and bad about it but I'm just going to try and enjoy it for what it is... A shameless cashing in of a franchise that I will gladly hand over my hard-earned pennies for. |

Thing is, it doesn't feel like a cash in. It definitely feels like this was made for a reason and doesn't feel like they just did it for the sake of it. It adds dimensions to the character and it is great knowing what happened to him in 19 years. |

I did genuinely enjoy this, from the little reference to the Lost Ark in the warehouse, through the *ahem* incident in the quiet American suburb, right down to the poor CGI on our little friend right at the end. Think they could've milked the face melting a little more, but I liked the burning eyes. I see what you mean by this hardly being a cash in... Not just the standard Indy-formula. |

I whole ending could have just done with one more redraft, just to make everything clearer. It was weird. In this, and Raiders and Crusade, Indy actually does very little - the villains defeat themselves. If he hadn't got involved at all, it would have had the same outcome.
