Hotel Manzai Restroom, Avalon, Angelic Wraith Empire
9:39 AM

Joanna, after finishing her business, quickly exhibited the sort of assertiveness that she was known for.

She dialed her personal secretary, Diana, on a secure line and waited. On the second ring, a pleasant female voice answered, "Yes, Ms. Halbere?"

"Diana, my work here in Avalon is almost done. I want you now to send our neighbor, the nation of Anu-Asiya, a letter offering warmer relations. Make it flattering. As for discussion, trade and military matters are paramount.

"Very well, Madam, I'll get on it right away."

"Thanks, Diana."

Joanna hung up and walked back to her meeting with the Emperor of the Angelic Wraith Empire.

To: The Matriarchy of Anu-Asiya
From: The Premier of the Rean Progressive Federation, Marcus Seross

Greetings to our friends in the honorable Matriarchy of Anu-Asiya! We find it quite ridiculous that, despite being neighbors, we have not had communication until now. We would like to clarify that our lack of communication is in no way a slight towards your Nation. As such, we would like to request a summit between our two nations discussing possible trade and mutual military assistance. As an apology for disregarding the relations between our great states, we will hold the summit at a location of your choice. Please respond as soon as possible!

Marcus Seross, Premier of the Rean Progressive Federation

"Empress! Empress! There is a letter addressed to you from the neighboring country!" One of the government workers called to Anii.
He gave it to Anii and Anii read it. Anii then thought and wrote a response.

"Dear Mr. Seross,
I am glad to get a letter from you about the relations of our nations. Why dont you come to my palace for a private meeting? Our first meeting should be private so that the results of our meeting dont go public immediately. You can come anytime, preparations are being made. I will be glad to see you at our meeting.

Sincerely,

Empress Aniihya Redum aea Akkad inna Aziyya

Royal Palace of Anu-Asiya
8:27 AM

Two days after Joanna received the reply from the Matriarchy, she found herself standing on the helipad that gave a panoramic view of the royal palace and its auxiliary buildings. Joanna wasn't the type to whistle, but her eyes did widen a bit, which was an exceptional thing in itself. Her company emphasized functionality and minimalism whenever possible, so many of her buildings had none of the grandeur that lay in front of her eyes at that moment. But enough of that.

Joanna was an impatient person, and like the meeting with the Empire, there seemed to be no one to greet her as her personal bodyguards escorted her to the front entrance of the palace.

"Maybe the princess herself will come running out herself," she joked to herself and chuckled.

Anii noticed a helicopter land in front of her palace. It was the long awaited guest. Anii walked out of the palace only having two guards behind her. Anii wore a red hooded dress and a simple black choker that seemed to be either a thin leather or a ribbon. A sheathed short was at her side. Her attire seemed rather simple than wealthy or royal. Her palace didnt have any gold on it, just marble. "Welcome you must be Joanna. I am Empress Aniihya but you can just call me Anii. Would you like to get out of the hot sun and come inside? We have drinks and meals prepared for you. If you dont like particular stuff such as alligator meat or the occasional meat of the executed then tell me so." Anii said to the guest.

Joanna was surprised. First, it really was the princess herself who came out to greet her. Second, she thought she addressed the letter in the Premier's name, but Anii already knew what her name was, even though the meeting with the Empire only took place two days ago. Joanna immediately became wary of Anu-Asiya's intelligence capabilities.

As all of this analysis went through her mind, she bowed deeply to the empress.

"I'd be happy to have whatever is most convenient for you to give me. I'm always fond of trying new food, but would prefer to stay away from human meat, if you wouldn't mind."

Joanna smiled apologetically, as they walked into the palace.

"Dont worry about the food." Anii said. She then turned to her guards and said: "Bring some of our fruits and bread into the meeting room. And dont forget the desert cow cold cuts and cheese. We want to make her feel comfortable." Anii then put her right arm around Joannas shoulder and led her into the palace. They came down a hall with red and black carpets. Then they went into a room that was small but comfortable. There were sitting cushions on the floor and a low table were lots of fruit was set up. "Come have a seat." Anii said and sat down on one of the cushions.

Joanna took Anii's words and sat down with both legs folded neatly under her. She waited until Anii took the first piece of fruit from the table, and then began quickly, but politely, gorging herself on the apples that were so rare in Rea's tropical weather. Only recently had she ordered hydroponic facilities to be built to grow Rea's uncommon fruits and vegetables.

But back to business. Joanna had taken a liking to this Anii character, and gave her a rare, genuine smile. Putting down her eating utensil, she began speaking.

"Madam Empress, I've come today in the place of Premier Seross to foster warmer, closer relations between our two great nations. I share his astonishment that even as we are long-time neighbors, we have never in our history taken the steps necessary to open trade or even learn about each other. I personally volunteered for this job because I want that to change, and I hope, after this meeting, we will have taken the first step to friendship."

She breathed in after her little speech, and waited for Anii's reply.

"Great idea. It would be good for our relationship and economy. And my people can learn to be more tolerant to foreigners." Anii said and smiled. Outside there was a loud bang. "Dont worry about that sound. We are doing what we can against religious terrorist groups here in Anu-Asiya. I recommend that if you go into town that you have at least four bodyguards with you. The people should be friendly but some mistake all foreigners for dirty Urubs."

"Thank you for the advice, I'll be sure to follow it when I tour the city. You'll find that Rea highly respects other nations' independence and method of governance, so rest assured that we will not, without your permission, interfere with your internal affairs unless specifically asked."

Joanna meant this sincerely. Personally, she thought fools like Seross who advocated a big-nosed foreign policy were self-righteous cultural bigots in disguise. She scoffed internally and continued her mental rant while eating more apple slices. Democracy, human rights, global economic responsibility. The first was merely an ideology, the second cultural bigotry, the third perpetually unprofitable to the economically strong. Judging by Anii's statements so far, her country violated at least two out of these three "sacred" principles. Joanna respected her for that. She then realized she had been staring off into space while ranting, and quickly shook her daydream off.

"I'm terribly sorry, Anii. Got into a little world of my own there. Anyway, I'd appreciate it if we could get into the business of this meeting." She smiled again.

"I'd first like to request trade between our nations. Rea will trade its ample supplies of raw gems and silver for a portion of your petroleum and grains. We really do need petroleum at this point, but if you're unable to spare any, we understand as it is a very valuable resource. We are willing to part with more of our goods; a trade deficit is acceptable for us.

"Second, as our military recently underwent an upgrade of massive proportions, we need to train this powerful asset for it to be of any use. Therefore, we'd like to also request a full military exercise involving the Armies, Navies, and Air Forces of our two countries.

"Third, as our two nations share borders with each other, Rea would appreciate an openness between itself and Anu-Asiya. That is, we'd like to make it easier for travelers or migrants to move from Rea to Anu-Asiya, and visa versa. I know that this offer is sudden, and if you cannot accept it, please note that it will not impact Rea's attitude towards Anu-Asiya. This offer, in my opinion, is our government's apology for ignoring our neighbor for so long."

Joanna relaxed her shoulder muscles, picked up another apple slice, and waited for Anii's response once again.

"I am fine with the first and the third but what do you mean with military exercise? And to let you know, my country is a giant in making weapons, especially large weapons such as artillery, tanks and rocket launchers. If we open up our borders, I can finally begin with building a high-speed freeway over the border. If you like we can take a short trip to the coast to my summer palace. I will be driving. Then you can see our well build roadways at speeds that would normally be a bit too fast in other countries. Dont worry about safety because even though the speeds are high and our cars arent made very fuel efficient, our automobile industry always has safety first." Anii said and smiled.
