How To Guide : Fitting Carbon Decal

I thought I'd do a quick guide as a few people have asked how.

I started off with good intentions, but forgot to take pictures after I started the decal fitting!

Step 1)

What you'll need. (Not in picture; Hair dryer) Micro Sol and Micro Set, scissors, craft knife, warm water, kitchen paper towels and a pen.

Thankfully, the guy I was doing this for had the forsight to paint this before sending it to me. I would highly suggest either painting the surface that the decal is being fitted to, or, giving it the lightest key you can imagine. This helps the decal grip, but nt enough for it to impede manovering the decal into place.

Step 2) (Forgot to take pics, but once I do another, I'll take pics of the process)

Here, you can either place the surface which will recieve the deal onto the backing sheet and draw around it. I would suggest making it about 2mm bigger that you need all around, then cutting it out. The other option is to cover the panel in masking tape, draw around the edge then remove the tape. Stick this to the backing paper and cut around it.

Offer it up to the panel to make sure it's roughly the right size.

Step 3)

Place the decal in the water. Leave it in for about 10 - 1 minute (Different types of decals need different amounts of time). Take it out of the water and place it with it's backing paper on, onto a piece of kitchen roll.

While the excess water is soaking up brush Micro Set onto the panel that will have the decal. Don't be shy with this stuff, use loads!

Place the decal onto the panel and roughly line into place. Use the brush to get rid of the worse areas of wrinkling. You do not need to have this perfect at this stage, just make sure it in the right area. The decal will start to become softer, so be very careful with it!

Step 4) (No pics for this stage, but again, as I'll be doing some more soon, I will update.)

Once the decal is roughly in the right area, use the hairdryer on a low setting to get rid of some of the water. It will also make the decal stick to the panel. At this stage, it's time to use the Micro Sol. This makes the decal EXTREMELY soft. DO NOT attempt to do the whole area in one go. Instead, divide the panel into three or four areas.

Use the Micro Sol on a small paint brush. Brush it over a small area. This will allow you to work out any creases or bubbles. Once you are happy that you've got rid of the creases, use the hairdryer to dry it out. If you notice any imperfections, just repeat the process. Once one area is finished, move onto the next, making sure that you don't put any of the Microsol on the area you're happy with.

For complicated shapes (Bootlids) don't try and do the whole panel with one piece of decal. Use two as it will make your life A LOT easier! Just try to get the decals lined up.

Step 5) Clear Coat! Use loads of lacquer to get the best shine!

I hope this helps a few people out.I will add some more WIP pics as and when I do some more panels.

Having given that guide, if you still aren't sure, I'll be happy to do apply decals for people if you want to send them to me!

Glad to be of assistance mate!

It's properly time consuming though. The bonnet alone took 3 hours yesterday afternoon. The boot a little less at 1 hour.
