Looking into getting a small lathe to turning bits for model cars. Namely wheels and exhausts. Also want it to practice using it before work buys a big one so i can say i can use one :) Anyone reccommend a cheap one? Or what to look for when buying secondhand as i dont know anything bout them Thanks Jonny |

what sort of price range are you looking for and what sort of size - i have a Clarke CL300 which is 300mm between centres it's a great modlers lathe will do screw cutting (threads) has power feed for turning between centres , Electronic variable speed - the lathe is actually made by seig but branded as a Clarke - check them out on the Machine Mart website - sometimes they come up on ebay - i'd steer away from a second hand one if your not sure what to look out for - main problems are worn Bed - if the bed is worn your not going to get any accuracy with your turning at all - beds can be repaird but it's expensive - another problem is worn saddle which is the part that moves up and down the lathe bed and also goes in and out it's the part that the tool post is mounted to the tool post is the part that holds the cutting tools if the saddle is worn then again there will be no accuracy to your work hope that sheds a little light on the subject for you - if you see anything online you like the look of send me the link and i'll be more than willing to check it out .. well as good as i can online |

yes the sieg C1 is a great little lathe but if you could afford the extra for the sieg C2A you get a lot more lathe for your money - this is the same lathe as mine but this is branded as Axminster where mine is branded as Clarke but it the same lathe made by sieg theres a lot more tooling you can get for this lathe and it comes with the change wheels (gears) for screw cutting threads http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-sieg-c2a-300mm-mini-lathe-prod564883/ |
