Saw a lot of people struggling with this, so thought id share how I do it. Normally youd do this AFTER your clear coat, unless you want glossy black window rubbers, so leave a good 24/48hrs after the final clear coat just to avoid the paint peeling off with the masking tape! To mask it up all you need is the shell youre painting, a sharp scalpel/craft knife, some regular masking tape and some 6mm TAMIYA MASKING TAPE http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250804084091 ![]() Tear a length off , lay it on the roof overlapping the rubber ![]() Use your fingernail and run it down the join , then smooth the tape down on the roof ![]() Gently run the scalpel down the join, hard enough to cut the tape but not hard enough to cut the paint! ![]() Run your fingernail down the join AGAIN, this just sticks the tape in the gap properly and seperates it if it hasnt cut properly anywhere ![]() The excess tape will now just roll back easily, good thing about Tamiya tape is that is has a very weak adhesive so it wont mark or stick to the paint, you can just rub your finger over the edge and itll pull up ![]() Ta-daa ![]() Do it on every edge of the roof ![]() Blank it in with the normal masking tape, but use the tamiya stuff over the edges. Simply cause normal masking tape is pretty thick and paint can seep through the edges a bit ![]() Same thing with the side windows, lay the tape over the joins, dont bother trying to curve the tape round bends etc, just overlap it ![]() Edited by Administrator, Apr 20 2011, 10:49 PM.

Fingernail round the edges![]() Cut it, fingernail and peel it off ![]() Now layer up some tape a little way down the side of the car, about 1/2cm, and do the same on the tops of the wings ![]() Once youve done both sides, use the normal masking tape and overlap it onto the tamiya tape ![]() Then put some tape over the inside of the windows and anywhere the paint could get on the inside of the shell. Then use some more Tamiya tape to go over the joins of the masking tape, again just to be safe! ![]() Double check the whole car for any gaps / loose bits, and get some Halfords matt black (Ive tried a few other brands, but highly recommend halfords as its not to thick that the tape pulls the paint off, and not too thin it soaks through everything) ![]() A quick light mist coat will seal up the edges, and give the wet coat a base. Obviously putting a wet coat straight on will make the paint just build up and soak through the tape. ![]() Then a wet coat, make sure you get everything that isnt masked, nothing worse than unmasking and finding bits where it hasnt covered. ![]() DO NOT put the car near a heat source or in the sun to dry, from past experience any heat will melt the glue on the tape and leave lovely stripes on your nice new paintwork. Give it 10/20mins to dry, if the masking tape is touch dry just start to carefully peel it off, dont get too excited or you could pull off some paint etc Once all the tapes off, you should have something like this ![]() If paint has gotten through anywhere, it should be still tacky and you could try and use your fingernail to scrape it off, or just wait till its dry properly and wet sand/polish it off.
