A couple of days ago, AmPatriot asked me (on the phone) If I was working out...

I gotta tell ya... It's tough for me to DICIPLINE myself into a regiment on the weight bench... I get to it... but I do not have a steady SCHEDULE that I am locked into... which is really what NEEDS to happen...

So.. I told him "Not really"...

Last night I was getting my ass KICKED (as usual) in my Tuesday night JuJitsu class and got to thinking.. well.. I actually AM doing something on a regular schedule that "counts" as a "workout"...

It's definantly a hard workout... AND... I get to learn how to take IMMEDIATE CONTROL of an attacker...

win win...

Check it out.. for only 35 bux a month... you will NOT find a better martial art option ANYWHERE in the twin Cities area...

and JuJitsu...? It ROCKS!

the video looks cool, and makes it seem that taking out your attacker is easy. but remember its a demo. the attacker reacts not at all, allowing the defender to show his stuff.
I was in wresting for 7 yrs, and did these kind of demo's. and for learning how to do moves, your partner basically lets you or helps you do the move. AB can probably attest to what happens in practice when opponent resists him.
not that i think you should not do this just a reminder, its a sales video to get more students. and those were advanced moves they showed, all martial arts take alot of effort. 3-5 days a week to get there. 1 time a week is not gonna do it. personally, i always wanted to learn a martial art, but couldn't commit the time to do it right.
IMO

twice a week is better than Once.
Once a week is better than Dunce.

even the SIMPLEST of the Yawara moves ... are VERY easy to learn.. and VERY useful...

I took Aikido once a week (for only about 6 weeks) back in '95

One of the simple techniques I learned (Aikido version of Katata Tori) there was useful for me when I took down a belligerent drunk across the street from my house in the course of making a "Citizen's Arrest"..

You need it 5 times a week if it's going to be your new religion....

Twice a week is good enough for learning how to defend yourself...

I agree with you AB. The twice a week training has done a lot for me. I go home afterward and replay the class in my mind and practice the things I learned over again to help me learn them better.
I have already noticed major changes in how I react physically and mentally to stressors.

just to be clear i am NOT down on the training. since i unfortunately have more free time than i would like, i will likely being finding someplace to do this also.
and your training 2 times with instruction, plus coming home and practicing. there is your 3-5 times. if you don't practice at home you should be.
like i said 1 time a week is not enough. thats all i'm saying.
i have been competing in one sport or another continually for the past 30yrs, you can't get the required muscle/mental memory once a week. you can learn stuff but will plateau sooner.
just trying to add some intel. not bring you down.
cheers,
jesse

It's all good! It is important to stress the need for practice and dedication to learning.

Too far for any commitment from me. I looked at some local stuff but it wasn't necessarily what I was looking for.

AM Don't forget we can invest in a set of focus mits, thai pads, and some boxing gloves and just work with each other. Lets make sure we don't drop the ball. Lets get those DVDs and I'll get you those videos and organize some type traing regiment for us. All I need is a partner to spar with and we'll be fine. For a grappling mat I'm going to work on the spartan circle this week. It won't be the most comfortable place to train but it will suffice for sparring with ground game. We can train on ground game right in my living room (I move my couches when I work with the boys and its plenty of space...) My woman starts back at work next month. then we can do like friday nights and saturday nights in my living room. I think we can go halves on the focus mits/thai pads and buy our own boxing gloves. Anybody else who is interested just let me know. NOTHING IS SET IN STONE YET.

I have been doing some basic grappling lately and a little bag work but I noticed I do not have the power I used to. Conditioning has been hard lately for some reason. I wished I had learned more to pass on to my boys. The older one lifts for school so he has become strong for his age and I find I have to out smart him when we grapple. Thanks to the little BJJ training I had back in the 90's I can still take him. lol
I am going to avoid the small joint and hand manipulation you guys are doing for my own personal reasons.

Work that heavy bag for 60 seconds full power combos. 60 second break. then 60 second full power combo again. grab a couple 3lb mini sledge (y'know the ol' 3lb enheimers) and hold high on the neck just under the hammer head and work shadow boxing with those. That helps build power too. Also most of your punching power comes from your hips and form.
