I've spent two days cutting oak and two days splitting it with a mall. A splitting mall will let you know where your fitness level is for sure. lol Off to the chiropractor I go. I've got oak for sale to boot.

Got a 5' two man and some home made saw bucks if you want to test you arm conditioning. lol I keep a hand full of pebbles in my pocket, it teaches your partner not to bind the saw. If he trys to push it binds, then i throw one of the pebbles.
I have been heating with wood all winter. I actually cook my breakfast on the wood stove with my cast iron pan.

i used to split all my firewood with a maul but i broke down and bought a wood splitter a few years back. wist i had a dollar for evertime i swung that maul. id be a rich rich man right now.

it will sure tear up your shoulders and back thow. i found that using a 6 pound maul is a bit easier on your back then a 8 pounder. also if your wood is still green it splits easier if its cold out and it freezes.

do yourself a favor and buy some splitting wedges as well. if you have a hard block to split just hammer in a wedge and let it do the work for you. you can hammer it it in and leave the block sit. after a while you can hammer it in further. the wedge will do most of the work for you as the wood comes apart.

i have also found that cutting yourself a block as big around as you can find and 6 to 12 inches in length works really well to for putting other blocks of wood on to split. this raises the wood up a bit so you dont extend your shoulders and arms out so much on the down swing.

plus it gives your block something solid to sit on so the ground doesnt absorb part of your swing energy.

sometimes i dig out my maul just to remind myself how much i like my woodsplitter.

forgot to add make sure you bend you knees on the down swing so that you put your full weight behind each swing.
after you try it it will just come naturally if it hasnt allready.
