If you do not have a 4x4 truck, now is the time to go get one. The ability to leave the road and go through the ditch will be priceless.

I agree. Also, winter in Minnesota can cause a problem for someone without 4 x 4 if the roads are not being kept up to standard. Being able to pull your neighbor out of a ditch will also be a big plus!

from "frugals furums:

...A LIST OF THINGS THAT "If you had it to do over again" YOU WOULD GET..{snip}.. CAR: I would have bought a 4x4, even though I live in the city. A 4x4 allows you to dive over the sidewalk or through wasteland, away from roadblocks or riots. I’ve see those that have 4x4s simply go off road, climb over a boulevard and leave while the rest of us poor car owners have to stay.

A 4x4 truck also has more mass and power in case that someone tries to cut you off or rams you with the car. It’s less likely to stop running if you hit someone or several people (in a riot situation) since it’s prepared for cross country use and the engine is much more protected....

Any suggestions guys on what 4X4 would suit me and my finances? I don't know much about trucks or suvs. What would be something affordable and still usable?

The four door hold thier resale value better. I prefer chevy 2500. It's built like a one ton so you can haul anything you want.

I am going with a 4x4 Suburban or Expedition with third row seat ... I have a BIG family and need a big vehicle... your situation may differ... you may get by with a Durango or blazer...

YOU do YOUR research... and that way... when you buy, you can buy with confidense in what you have decided.

What-ever you do... you are going to want durability, common replacement parts, enough capacity, reliability...

kinda sounds like the same criteria for buying a survival long-arm LOL

we have a 96 chevy s-10 blazer, its the 2 door sport model, 4.3 v6 with a 5 speed gets 20 mpg, got it used for $600.
got a 04 jeep cherokee 4.0 with automatic it doesnt get as good a mileage or have the towing ability of the blazer and it cost way lots more.
i also have a 94 f250 4x4 drinks gas like its goin out of style but i can tow or haul almost anything with it.

i geuss the big thing is decideing what you need the vehicle to do for you. i have a lot of experience with different types of 4x4 vehicles as i used to build mud trucks when i was younger. note: mud trucks will cost you a lot of money

Glanced at prices on blazers, looks like I can get a '99 with 75k miles for under 5K. Doable, and from what I have looked at my needs may be, should work just fine. Definitely gonna try to find a job A LOT closer to home to save boatloads of frns on gas.

rangers have kind of a weak link in the locking hub department. the ones with lockouts are ok but auto hubs on them are very weak. same is true of explorers of the same time period and front axle style. also the auto trannies can be problematic in them.

ive got lots of experience with them to lol. basically anything 4x4 built from the early 70s to the mid 90s i have worked on and beat on and broken and worked on and................wasted a lot of money

One thing to consider is the age of the 4X4 and your ability to 'Repair' it. I have a early 70's K5 Blazer. It will go anywhere, and runs like a top. However I can also fix it with minimal tools. I also have a 2007 F250 for work. It will be sitting in my driveway if I leave. There is little hope of me doing anything to keep it running.

Older Jeeps, and Land rovers are generally an easy fix.

4x4 in deep snow for the first time in your life is a glorious experience...you'll never go back....I bought new 4x4 rangers in '92, '00, and '02...only one I had to replace hubs on was the '92 (replaced the autis with lockouts) , but the others didn't wind up with th mileage that the '92 did...
