I have been reading a book about the life of Musashi, who is perhaps the most famous samurai in the history of Japan. The book, I'm reading is written by Eiji Yoshikawa ans is entitled simply Musashi. I got interested in Musashi's life after reading Vagabond, a manga by my favorite author Inoue Takehiko. I'll give some basic information about Musashi here, but wikipedia is probably a more reliable source. Miyamoto Musashi was one of the most iconic characters in the Japanese History and is considered a national here. He lived in an era of transitions, when the way of the sword was starting to be replaced by primitive firearms and was the greatest symbol of the bushido, or the way of the warrior. He was the writer of Gorin no Sho, or the Book of the Five Rings, considered to be one of the best books of the millenium in strategy. He also created the kenjutsu style in which two swords are used at once, called Niten Ichi Ryu. |
