Welcome to the critique subforum, everyone! Here, you may ask for and dispense critiques and advice to your fellow handlers. However, there are a few rules: 1. Don't be a jerk This should go without saying, but, just to clarify, this is a place to provide helpful advice to allow your fellow handlers to improve their writing skills. If you don't like something, explain why. Don't trash on characters just to trash on them. Similarly, if you are being critiqued, do not justify things in response to criticism. Do not become angry or aggressive. You asked for critiques, so be receptive to them. A sub-rule: Never critique something that has not been requested. 2. Be honest A sugar-coated critique is worthless. People are asking for advice because they want their writing to improve, not because they need validation for their egos. Pull out positives and strengths, but don't pull punches on weaknesses. Just keep it respectful. 3. Be specific Examples are good. Try to be detailed in general. If you are ever uncomfortable posting something publicly, feel free to PM the handler you are critiquing. 4. Ask questions This is a great way to help the critique recipient think through what you've said. Check out the critique guide for more information. 5. Include, at a minimum, one positive and one negative This is the absolute minimum for a worthwhile critique. It's also as much as you have to do. Every little bit helps. 6. Spread the love Try to critique things with few replies. That's more useful than a tenth critique of the same scene, and you'd want your stuff critiqued too if you put it up. Basically, try to spread your efforts around. 7. Don't be afraid Feel free to critique anyone who asks for it. Do not feel discouraged because they "are a better writer than you", or anything of the sort. Everyone can learn from each other on this site, and people who ask for critiques will appreciate them, whoever offers them. Thread Protocol To request a critique, simply make a thread. You can request critiques of characters, threads, and scenes. Remember to link in your opening post, to the character, scene, thread, whatever. If a thread or a scene is requested, please include the handlers doing the requesting. Critiques should focus on the efforts and writing of those handlers. Assume anyone else is not interested in being critiqued, unless they chime in to say otherwise. And, with those as our rules for the moment, this board is open. Have at! |
