Devilman (デビルマン, Debiruman) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Go Nagai which originally started as an anime adaptation of the concept of Nagai's previous manga series, Mao Dante. A 39-episode anime TV series was developed by Toei in 1972 and Nagai began Devilman as a manga in Kodansha's Shōnen Magazine, barely a month before the TV series started. The series has since spawned numerous other anime, manga, novels and films.

I can't believe I never mentioned this before now. Mao Dante and Devilman are amazing classics. Anyone else seen/read them? Here's the manga for Devilman and Neo Devilman:

Devilman

Quote:

Akira Fudo, who has become the Devilman, the only being who can fight demons; a being possessing the powers of a demon and a soul of a man.

A long time ago, the Earth was ruled by demons. The demons constantly fought each other for survival, but soon found themselves fighting a new race of beings: The first humans. The demons then became imprisoned in ice after a great cataclysm. They would remain there until the ice melted, after which it was said Satan would rise and lead them in Armageddon. That time has come in Go Nagai's Devilman.

Neo Devilman

These are different stories involving Devilman's world. Some are about Devilman and add to the mythology some are separate stories that don't involve Devilman but take place the same time as the events in the original Devilman manga. They are illustrated by various artists. There are some color pages in the start middle and toward the end. There are some truly amazing art and stories in these volumes.

Number one is written and illustrated by Lazy Hagawari, Tatsuya Egawa, Katsuya Terada, Ken Ishikawa, Go Nagai and Shinichi Hiromoto.

Number two is written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki, Noriko Nagano, Go Nagai, Akihiko Takadera and Kazuko Yumeno.

Number three is written and illustrated by Noburu Miyama, Miki Toro, Shinobu Kaze, Sho-u Tajima, Masaomi Kanzaki, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Iou Kuroda.

And for good measure, Mao Dante.

Quote:

The great demon Mao Dante, exploiting the weakness of a boy exposed to his demoniac influence in the dreams, is awakened from a thousand years sleep.
The will of this being, a survivor of an ancient and forgotten civilization , is to wipe out the whole human race.
Anyhow nothing is so simple: the motivations of the demon aren't soo wicked as one could think and they will combine with the life of the boy which hangs between nightmare and craziness.
In the meanwhile the satanist will fight against the hierarchy of the church to obtain a justice which is, as it's easy to guess, that of the demon Mao.
This series didn't have an ending until it's remake in 2002. Nagai took many ideas from Mao Dante into Devilman.

Old anime = the peaking of Eka's interest. :O
From the 1970s, eh? And its plot sounds pretty nice. If I can find it online, I'll check it out (maybe the manga too.)
