Not sure where else to put this. Move if you want, Mephisto. So, alright. I gotta do a bit of explaining before I can get to the main topic. Long story short: I have been depressed for a LONG time, and in my depression, I let my grades suffer to the extent I was in my Junior year of High School, and I had ruined my chances at graduating on time. It would take another year or two just to graduate at all, and the school I went to was hell; so I left. I decided on getting a GED, and going to a community college for a semester to get my GPA high enough to go to a university. Now, I'm gonna get my GED pretty soon, and then I'll have to decide on which major I'm gonna do, so I know what to do while at community college. The thing is, I'm not sure what I want to major in. I have some things I'll need to make sure fit the major's criteria: Whatever I choose, I'll need to make sure the average yearly pay is enough to pay the bills for living expenses, pay a good number of medical bills (Due to transition, which in all, costs around, or over, $50,000 ON AVERAGE (Of which will be happening ASAFP, meaning I might, and will most likely be in debt from loans for School and transtition before I even graduate)), and live comfortably. I was thinking of these, but won't limit myself to: Computer Engineering Teaching (this would require working my ass off, of course. I don't mind though, because it honestly interests me. But it generally doesn't pay as much as I'd like. I think a High school teachers average pay is somewhere like $25 - $30 an hour, according to payscale.com (but from what my previous teachers have told me, that sounds like a bullcrap number.). I'd like to do some study in Theatre and Art, but those don't pay... So, any other ideas? |

You could be a high school computer teacher! If you're interested in Computer Engineering and Teaching, then there you go! Of course, I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but whatever. XD (I think you should go into Computer Engineering, because you're already really good with computers. :P) |

Computer Engineering is not related to teaching in any way, unless you teach it at a college. And I'm only as decent with computers as anyone should be. I'm not very skilled, I just know basics. Plus, unless I can get some tutoring in math, I probably won't be able to do it. |

How were you in math before you umm... depression? Computer Engineering requires some high level mathematics. Not an easy major... How far did you get with mathematics? How difficult was the material? <-- going into the same field... sorta Edited by MOE, May 29 2009, 04:34 PM.

Computer engineering does require a few high-level math courses; if it's not your strong point, you'll simply have to work harder. However, if there's something that you love doing but it won't pay, try minoring in it, even if it's completely unrelated. This has the fringe benefit of broadening what you learn when the time comes to put your experiences down on your resume; it shows that you can see things from a different field's perspective. |

"It is difficult to associate these horrors with the proud civilizations that created them. Sparta, Rome, the knights of Europe, the samurai...they worshipped strength, because it is strength that makes all other values possible. Nothing survives without it." "Don't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." | |

I'm half with matt on this one. I'm going into an English major, with a minor planned for journalism, and quite possibly getting a teaching certificate, but somehow I don't think that would work for you. No offense, you just don't seem like the type for it. You just have to ask yourself what you enjoy doing, then see which careers allow you to do that. Pick the one you like most and see which courses you'd need to take for it. I don't know what you think about this, but I could imagine you as a doctor of some sort. |

I would want to teach so I could have an impact on the world. I'd want to make sure no one ended up like I did. I could never be a doctor. @A@ It takes almost 8 years to get the full degree, not to mention I would hate to break it to them they're/their family/friend is gonna die. I mean, I could totally do it, but I wouldn't want to. DX Like I said, I want to do what I love, but I can't because you don't make much money on them. Edited by Gwen, May 30 2009, 08:43 AM.

Art majors never get anywhere, financially, unless you make it big. the statistics are really high on that one... Computer Engineering I could do. I'd just have to work my butt off to get the math all down. I'm just not sure what else there is. I wanna see all the options DX |

See previous doctor reasons. You have to take way more than just 4 years. Not to mention, if I did, I'd prolly be a bad one. What makes you think I could be a psychologist? |

I don't know. I was just throwing ideas out. Hmmm.... well, I'll just take up Scar's suggestion, just be a journalist or a professional critic. That way, you can gripe about anything you want and people would probably take it as truths and actually listen (no offense intended).

Somehow Cree I can't see you being a teacher, I mean you seem to have enough trouble dealing with the 4 or so idiots on that forum, how could you handle a classroom, where you aren't allowed to flame them for being idiots? xD |
