Unlike the roar in the engine room or the constant chatter in the galley, here in the conference room was just the barest murmur of conversation and machinery. It was a peaceful place, certainly. But Lydia always found it just a little bit too quiet for her liking, working in such silence and social isolation. Even so, even she had to brave some hush every now again and she did so now with a fairly huge ham sandwich balancing precariously on one arm. Under the other were a bundle of notes she’d been handed, the cook found she couldn’t go walkabout without several officers accosting her at once, handing her supply lists and special meal requests and so on. It didn’t bother her, but still she was a mite disturbed at the reaction she prompted when she walked into the room and stated sashaying her way past machinery under a mop of chestnut hair. There was an audible gasp and everyone present seemingly scrambled to cover their monitors with frightened rabbit eyes. Lydia took a moment to pause and sigh. “This again? Fellas, for the thousandth time I’m sorry I dropped that tea over the console. And like I keep telling y'all, it won’t happen again, honest!” Her imploring gaze was greeted by a mixture of doubtful and amused glances. “’sides, there are only so many baskets of apology muffins a gal can bake.” She added in a mutter before she started to move again, finding her target.

It didn’t take her long to spot Casper, the back of his head was as recognisable as the rest of him by now and as always, Lydia thought it was clearly just begging to be ruffled by a mother’s hand. Still, best not to be too informal when he was trying to work. No-one liked their mom showing up and embarrassing them at school.

“Casper? Casper sweetheart?” She reached out and gave his shoulder a light tap, trying to gently guide him out of his busy revere. “Brought you a little lunch. Remember I said I was gonna start reminding you when to eat? So you don’t sit here for two days straight again?” Setting the plate down next to him, she hooked her ankle around a chair and dragged it towards her, before unceremoniously plonking herself down next to her friend.
