[title]Out Of Character[/title] Name: Missy Contact: PM, preferably. Play-By: Morena Baccarin Additional Characters: None [title]Cortex Profile[/title] Name: Inara Serra Alias: none Gender: Female Date of Birth: April 15, 2481 Home Planet: Sihnon Last Known Location: Serenity Loyalty: Neutral Occupation: Companion Title: n/a Family: Javin and Nina Serra Flags: Travels on Serenity [title]Physical Description[/title] Height: 5'5" Build: Slender, toned but not necessarily athletic. Hair Color: Dark brown Eye Color: Brown Noticeable Features: Inara has something of an exotic look about her. Her skin is a dark olive tone, free of blemishes or freckles. Her eyes are a slight almond shape and a rich chocolate brown. Dark, curly hair usually tumbles about her shoulders, though if she's attending an event she'll often wear it up. She has a thin, graceful build and often wears clothing to accentuate her features. Inara wears primarily bold colors and expensive fabrics, favoring silks and fine linens rather than the practical clothes of Serenity's crew. Her garments vary between tight and silky and loose and flowy, depending on the circumstances. Her makeup is usually understated, typically just eyeliner and a red or maroon lipstick. [title]Psyche Evalution[/title] Inara Serra has far more to her than meets the eye. On the surface, she is the perfect companion--witty, elegant and talented. Years of training have given her the ability to entertain both intellectually and physically. Her training has also given her the ability to lie, for better or for worse. Though she can be ruthless when necessary, she is also extremely devoted to those she cares about. Contrary to her expectations, she loves Serenity's crew to an extent she would have never dreamed possible. What initially begun as a business investment and an opportunity to get out of Companion House Madrassa blossomed into caring deeply for the crew that happened to run the ship that carried her shuttle--when she thought about it, she found the idea remarkable. However much that she cares about Serenity's crew, Inara does not share her personal history with them. Because it never occurred to her that she would have more than brief conversation between stops with the crew, she never planned on revealing intimate details of her history to them. Now that her relationship with the crew has grown, she feels that revealing the information now would only end badly--she can almost see the hurt in Kaylee's eye upon learning that she'd kept such an awful secret from them. Besides, she comforts herself often, it's under control. Though she loves her line of work, Inara does find that it quite often conflicts with her personal feelings. Several men have made offers asking to 'take her away' from her lifestyle, encouraging her to settle down and live a rich life of glamor and comfort, but Inara has always refused--she enjoys her freedom to travel too much, as well as the company of Serenity's crew (she refuses to allow her mind to dwell too long on the ship's captain). Her emotions get the better of her at times, but overall Inara is a strong woman. She is not afraid to defend herself, and will often do so most vehemently regardless of who she is defending herself against--both Mal and rude clients have been on the receiving end of some of her most vicious barbs by implying that her career is anything less than reputable. Though not necessarily cocky, Inara holds herself and her career in high esteem--a companion is more than a whore, requiring years of training in martial arts, social etiquette, conversation and dance and other arts, she is quick to point out. Not that she has anything against whores, either--as Serenity's crew knows, everyone has to make a living somehow. [title]Personal Records[/title] Inara rarely speaks of her life before Serenity, only remarking vaguely about past events. She was born in the year 2481 to Javin Serra and Nina Pravil on the planet Sihnon. Nina, who had spent some time in companion training herself, left the academy at 18 after meeting Javin, a successful banker and heir to his family's small but substantial fortune, at a social function hosted by The Companion Guild. They were married at 20, and Inara was born two years later. As a child, Inara enjoyed a life exclusive to those on the core planets--she received the best education, experienced a world of culture and never wanted for any necessities. At twelve she enrolled in companion education at the request of her mother; though Nina did not necessarily expect Inara to finish the training, she did hope that the schooling would encourage her to be a woman of social grace. Inara excelled in training, drawing the attention of several high-ranking members of The Companions Guild. At eighteen, she was offered a permanent residence at the Companion House Madrassa, so long as she could pass her test and physical examination. Inara had no trouble with the test, but when it came time for her physical examination, she spent a half-hour sitting on the examination table awaiting results that should have been nigh on instantaneous. A nurse reassured her that there was something funny with the results, but that they would re-run the test and she was sure it would turn up fine. Another half-hour passed before a grim-faced doctor entered the examination room with a document claiming that Inara, always full of life, was dying. For a moment she thought it might be some continuation of the test--though she couldn't connect how making a potential companion fear for their life would determine how successful they would be, she couldn't wrap her head around her own impending death. 'Puccinia,' they called it, a degenerative disease that, as she aged, would essentially cause her body to gradually shut down as time went on. The doctor, chewing anxiously on his lip, had almost certainly sealed that her aspirations for becoming a companion were doomed. He informed her that there was a treatment that would slow down the aging process to an almost imperceptible crawl, though it was most certainly out of her price range. Though Inara's family boasted an income enough to provide them with a more than comfortable living, the doctor insisted that it would not be enough. He could prescribe her medication to ease the inevitable pain, but told her with a grave expression that she must not hope for more than a few years more of life. She was dismissed from the office with a prescription for the pain medication, and returned home in tears to tell her family the awful news. Her father insisted he'd find a way to get the treatment if it meant selling all of their possessions, and retreated to his study to place a few phone calls regarding some debts that needed collecting. A few hours after the news, the High Priestess of Companion House Madrassa visited the Serra home with several of the house scribes in tow--with Inara's consent to work exclusively for Madrassa in exchange for the treatment, which The Companion Guild would provide. Before she made her decision, the High Priestess warned, Inara should realize that this meant she would work until she did not wish to work any more for any reason (at which point The Companion Guild would cease to fund her treatments) or until Madrassa saw fit to end their contract, a period that would be no shorter than fifty years. The choice seemed obvious for her--at only eighteen, she still had a lifetime ahead of her. Inara had no desire to die young, particularly when she'd been just given such a generous offer. She'd worked hard to reach her status and had no qualms about spending her life working for Madrassa; they'd always treated her kindly and she had no desire to quit any time soon. She had no use for taking a husband--she could take a long-term client, perhaps, and remain in the service of Madrassa without breaking her contract, and that was enough for her. She discussed it briefly with her parents, who, though skeptical of supporting Inara essentially signing her life away, agreed that Inara was certainly old enough to make such a decision herself. Javin promised her that he would do whatever it took to get her the treatment, but, not wanting to put that kind of stress on her family, Inara accepted the offer. Companion House Madrassa treated her well--she lived a life of luxury punctuated by continued training and travels to meet clients on other planets. She had treatments once a month, just a simple shot to the hip, paid for entirely by Madrassa. After almost nine years of working for Companion House Madrassa, Inara was offered the position of High Priestess. Though it offered handsome pay and a certain element of security, she refused--she enjoyed her work and her freedom to travel too much. Inara did not speak of her illness to her fellow companions. Only the high-ranking members of the companion house knew, and it slowly began to dawn on her that her lack of aging was beginning to become an issue. While many of her friends that she'd met in the companion house, such as Nandi, were aging gracefully, many moving on to greener pastures, Inara remained at the companion house without any signs of aging. Though she could pass as looking young for nearly thirty, she began so suspect that this was not a guise she could hide under for too long. Inara began to seek out customers further and further away--the more time she spent away, the less her fellow companions would remember her face. She kept this up for nearly five years before she voiced her concerns to the High Priestess. If she remained as a permanent resident of the Companion House on Sihnon, she said, people would take notice that she didn't age. She didn't want any accusations of favoritism and she certainly didn't want to reveal that all was not what it seemed--she asked the High Priestess to allow her to leave Sihnon, but remain as a licensed, practicing companion. To her great relief, the High Priestess approved of her decision. It took several weeks before Inara found a ship that suited her--many were too flashy, too military, too dull. Serenity caught her eye because it was none of those things. She had character (in the sense that some of her pieces seemed to remain attached by sheer luck), she was a transport ship and, most importantly, she didn't look as though her crew would ask too many questions. Inara and the captain--Malcolm Reynolds, a former Independent as evidenced by his worn brown coat--agreed that she could rent one of Serenity's shuttles that she could use to travel at will. Inara returns to Sihnon to visit her family and her Companion House on occasion, though she spends most of her time traveling to clients to avoid scrutiny for her lack of aging. If asked, Inara tends to skirt around her age but, if she must give a concrete answer, she'll usually say twenty-seven. |
