It had been quite the evening, and as tired as she had been before, she was utterly exhausted now. But even after her father had tucked her safe beneath the covers, fretting as he tended to do ever since her return to the Cressida. One and a half chapters of Huckleberry Finn later and Hunter had taken to snoring, out like a light on the side of her bed and still in his work clothes. Her stomach was growling at her though, and the child quickly lost patience sitting under covers and waiting for sleep to come. Besides, after about 45 counting butterflies to get to sleep got boring! Moving ever so slowly Rosalee slid out from under the covers, changing a pillow out for herself underneath her father's arm so he wouldn't wake up. Dragging Dot by the arm she practically pranced over to the door, reaching up over her head to pull it open; just enough to let herself slip out into the hallway before closing it up again. She was free! And not a minute to soon because her tummy gargled loud enough the whole ship must have heard! "Shhh! You'll wake him up!" Swatting at her belly with a frown she waited until it took her orders before turning towards the main galley. Time to go exploring in the cabinets an find herself something to eat! Maybe Rora hid some snacks up high, or Fi might have put cookies in the wall! Fi liked to hide things like that, it was fun trying to get them without her noticing. Thrilled by the prospect of such treasure buried within the room she didn't notice the other occupant until she'd trotted halfway across the room and was far in the open. The newest occupant of the ship was nearly as still as the furniture perched in a wooden chair at the table, a steaming mug in hand. Easy for an overly excited young girl to miss. She froze anyway, bright blue eyes going wide under the gaze of a matching pair; Dot clutched to her chest protectively (she hadn't forgotten the incident in the hall just yet). She'd been caught! Even if sneaking out after bed time didn't end up in the big kind of trouble with dad, Rosie was still uncertian about this woman. Her mother yes, but not at the same time. And how she had come back from the dead was beyond Rosie, maybe a wish on a star? She had asked for that on her birthday candles the year before! If that was the case wishes took a long time to come true. A girl had to learn to be patient! But her mother didn't look angry... not more than normal. So maybe if she tried she could get out of it? The sad eyes almost always worked on daddy. Taking in a quick breath to bolster herself Rosie began to speak matter-of-factly. Not moving forward, but not backing away either. "You're s'posed to be alseep." |

Tessa had come to the galley to snack and read in a place that wasn't the bunk that was her cell. She sat quietly on a stool, a book on contemporary painters of Ariel in the table and a plate of crack seasoned crackers and brie beside it. While not her favorite cheese it was still one she enjoyed. The red head had one knee pulled up to her chest, the other stretched out in front of her, one elbow resting on it as she idly braided the front of her hair to get it out of the way. She had been sitting there for approximately 56 minutes in total silence when a tiny noise drew her attention to the door. The sight of the little blond girl that looked so like her mother made Tessa freeze like a deer in the headlights, her eyes wide. She was afraid to move lest she frighten the girl and send her scurrying far away. It didn't help. Rosie saw her and she froze while her eyes seemed to double in size. It took the little girl a few moments to make a decision but she didn't leave. "You're s'posed to be alseep." Tessa let her head drop to the side, sending a fall of deep red hair over the front of her shoulder. "As are you," She finally said after a few moments. She took in the entire ensemble the girl was wearing, a tiny smile tugging at her lips when she got to her little tiny feet. "I like your unicorn slippers," At Rosalee's age she'd been enamored of mythical creatures, needing her rooms designed around them and stuffed animals and pictures and slippers and clothing. She had even had a pair of unicorn slippers not unlike the ones on her daughters feet. It brought back memories Tessa wasn't sure how to process so she wiped the small smile from her face and shoved her hair back behind her. "So why are you up? Couldn't sleep?" Her voice was crisp even as her heart skipped beats hoping her daughter wouldn't run away. She didn't know how to talk to the child, once she'd been great at it. Of course Rosie hadn't actually been able to talk at that point so it wasn't really an accurate accounting. Tessa took a steadying breath and slowly closed the book she had been reading to stop her from blurting out everything in her head. She would scare her and send her off to Hunter, who wasn't going to trust her in this lifetime. She couldn't blame him considering her past, but she had done what she needed to do. |

She noticed her slippers! At once the child's face lit up, looking down at her feet as she wiggled them around, showing off the horns. "This one's Jojo and this one's Lacey." She indicated the left and then the right without pause, even if they looked identical. Why was she up? Well... dinner was yucky! And it went everywhere except for her tummy so now she was hungry of course. Deciding the room was safe and that Tessa probably wasn't going to ring any alarms to get her in trouble. But her being there meant Rosalee couldn't go looking for any of the hidden stuff, she had to stay in the main kitchen. The tiny blonde shuffled over to the fridge. Perching on tippy toes and reaching up high to catch the lever in a small hand and pull. It swung open, the harsh inner light stinging her eyes. Squinting she looked around, trying to read the few words she knew and sound out the ones she didn't. "My tummy says it's time to eat, but I didn't have dinner like I was s'possed to..." Turning around she eyed the tall thin woman. "An' you can't tell daddy. It might hurt his feelin's!" Turning back she frowned. For the most part it was empty, jars scattered about with just scrapings left. One with a white kinda creamy thing like salad dressing, and Rosie hated salads; another with what might be jam? "P..pr..uh-nies..." No that wasn't right, dad had said something about E's doing stuff to letters before them. "Pr..yunns?" Huffing in frustration she turned back to her mother, holding up the tin that was most full in the fridge. It was marked p-r-u-n-e-s. "Are these good to eat?" |

Hurt his ..... ah. Hunter had been the one that cooked. Rosalee was very protective of her father, it was both sweet and endearing really. She nodded gravely at the request not to tell him of her search for food. She almost stood to help when the tiny blond reached high above her to jerk the fridge door open. Tessa had the sudden thought 'what if it hits her in the face?' the force the of door opening could make that happen. Her fears were alleviated moments later as the girl started poking around inside the fridge and then started sounding out a word before huffing in irritation and holding up a tin. "Prunes. I'm not overly fond of them myself," That was the truth about most food really. Food was supposed to be nutritious and filling, taste was negligible. The redhead decided to unfold herself from the chair she'd been on and make her way over to the refrigerator to look over her daughters shoulder. Well, head. The device was rather empty and what was there wasn't likely to be appetizing to a small child. Tessa frowned for a moment before turning and quietly opening cupboards to peek through everything. "How do you feel about scrambled eggs with ham and toast?" She'd found cubed ham and the powdered egg substitute that you mixed with water. That could work if she liked it. She turned to gaze at the child, still taller than the blond though she was kneeling on the floor. She cocked an eyebrow when Rosalee didn't say anything at first, but she didn't say anything. |

Prunes? Oh no, she'd had those. Those were not tasty to eat. Her nose crinkled up, frowning just slightly. Gammy had given them to her once, saying it didn't matter how it tasted if it was going to make you strong. But Rosalee tended to disagree with that, taste mattered a whole lot! Not that she would ever say that to Gammy... "Prunes." She repeated the word out loud, putting the writing to memory. The E did do something funny! It made U an 'oo' sound instead of an 'uh' one. By the time Rosie had gotten it put back in it's spot Tessa was above her. Tilting her head back Rosie could see the bottom of her chin, eye pointed forward. Mimicking, she looked back inside too, trying to spot something else that could be tasty. The jam! But Tessa was already off, shuffling through the cabinets. Rosie peeked around the fridge door, watching her almost shyly. For once she didn't look like a statue. She had pretty braids in the front that fell into her face, a big sweater like a blanket and a purple shirt! Rosie liked purple too, daddy didn't very much. He always had red or black or grey on. Sometimes Rosie could get him to buy a blue shirt too. Hugging Dot close Rosie remained very quiet. She really didn't know what to make of all this. This was mommy right? But she had a different name, and she was very quiet, and instead of Daddy talking about her like he did in the stories he seemed nervous. And Mommy was Alliance, and Rosie knew just as good as she knew her own name that the Alliance were bad and you had to avoid them. Tessa had even been one of the people that came on the ship and took her away! But how could mommy be bad? Then Tessa looked back at her and the child froze, caught looking and unsure what the woman would think. Glancing down a little she nodded. Eggs were tasty. "Can... I have jam on my toast?" She held out the jar, letting the fridge door fall closed. |

Tessa smiled a tiny bit, and nodded. "Of course you can," She took the jar and set it on the counter before going around to the table and bringing back a chair and the plate of crackers and cheese. She set the plate on the counter and set the chair in front of it so that if Rosalee wanted to watch her she could. The ingredients were quickly set on the counter, as well as the utensils she would need. It wouldn't do to start making a meal and not have everything you would need. Once everything was set up she began to move. The red head smiled again as she shoved the sleeves of the long soft sweater up around her elbows. It was an old one and the hem fell below where her shorts stopped, which was why she wore it as a robe more often than not. First things first, a little oil in the bottom of the small frying pan and then start heating it on the oven. Humming softly the redhead poured the powder into a bowl, adding water and then whisking it with a spoon before she tossed in some of the ham.She poured the mixture into the pam, enjoying the hissing sound it made at the sudden temperature change. Next she grabbed the loaf of bread from behind her and popped a couple slices into the toaster. She scrambled up the ham and egg substitute mix with a spatula, flipping and mixing as she went. The toast popped and Tessa pulled it out, tossing it onto a plate and spreading the jam liberally over the top. She shoved that over in front of the chair and then grabbed the brie, slivering out bits of the cheese and tossing it into the mix. A minute later it was done and she scooped out the scrambled concoction, half of it going on the plate with the toast, and the other half going onto the plate with the crackers she'd been using. "The midnight repast is served," |

It took her a few minutes, but she finally worked up the courage to move forward and clamber up onto the chair. Standing up and watching the cooking happen with her nose buried into Dot. It was different than Daddy did it, no opening and closing drawers or rummaging around for something. She used what was already out and that was it! When things were set in front of her She reached down, grabbed a piece of toast and took a bite with an easy grin. Tessa wasn't so bad, she made her food! "Whats a repast?" But they couldn't eat at the counter! There was a table right there. Quickly placing it back she hoped off the chair, a smear of jam at the corner of her mouth, grabbing her plate and setting it on the table that was just above her eyes. Then she turned back to get the other plate as well, placing it at the chair right next to her. Sitting into her chair (the table now just below her chin) she started at her toast for a second time, munching away happily. Glancing up at Tessa shyly the child swallowed a bite before working the nerve to ask a question. How come you went away? |

"Repast is another word for meal" Watching her child take her plate to the table Tessa followed her example after making sure the burner was turned off. She grinned a little at the picture the girl made sitting across from her, her tiny chin barely clearing the table top. With genes like Tessa's and Hunter's the girl was going to be tall though. The next question made her pause, her fork poised above the eggs. She set down the fork after a moment, staring at her daughter with a blank face for a few moments as she tried to gather her thoughts. She didn't want to scare Rosalee but she didn't want to lie to her either. There was a fine line there, but Tessa wasn't actually sure where the line fell. Nor could she expect Hunter to explain it since he didn't want to talk to her at all in the first place. "I thought it was the best thing for you. I knew you would be safer with your father." She was looking intensely at the little girl, wanting her to understand and wanting to answer all of her questions and have the little blond adoring her once again. It was very unlikely, but it didn't stop her heart from yearning a little bit. She made sure her face was blank, but she couldn't take her eyes off the beautiful little girl. |
