Jay and Gwen had already spoken privately and with Hunter needing to be briefed, Jay thought it beneficial to all that a meeting be called to apprise the entire crew of the situation. His original plan of doing this at the communal dinner had been disrupted on account of there not being a communal dinner due to a general distaste for charcoal briquettes masquerading as steaks. In all fairness to the new cook, at least she had tried, and Jay was sure he hoped that her skills had improved by the time he returned. Granted Gwen’s sudden departure had the most effect on the abbreviated dinner, but that was beside the point. The First Mate…well, former now he supposed, shook his head and smiled. Reaching up to the overhead, Jay toggled the shipwide comms and removed the microphone.

”May I have your attention. By the request of the captain, all crew are to report to the conference room for mission briefings. Please be prompt folks, there is a lot to cover.”

His announcement finished, Jay replaced the mic and looked around the deserted bridge. He was going to miss this ship, and admittedly all of the crew, even if he was only leaving for a few months. It was like leaving his family, and he patted the seat back as he turned to walk to the conference room. He arrived a few moments later and waited for the rest of the crew to arrive.

Well here goes nothing. Hunter had been locked away in the conference room with the doors closed scouring over the information sent to them from command on a wide cortex screen. He'd created a disheveled mess of papers that covered the table around him. Notes, remarks, detailed sketches as well as information from each crew member's files had been written down so that he could come up with a coherent sort of plan. Apparently this one was on him, an initiation of sorts, testing just whether it was a good idea to leave the man in charge of anything even temporarily.

He'd worked through a lot of it though, even if it had taken him a long while. It had been a couple years since he had tried to tackle a mission of quite this magnitude with so many bits and pieces and people to fit into it; he was a little more than rusty. Still, what he had finally come up with was shaping up to look like a solid start. But he couldn't go much farther without having a good long talk with the crew and getting a handle on just what their skills outside each member's respective jobs were.

Jay's voice crackle over the comm, knocking Hunter's attention from a detailed schematic of a ship's electrical system. It would seem dooms day was here, time to face the wrath of a crew disgruntled over both their new first mate and the mission they were being sent away on. Lovely. Collecting the pages into a somewhat ordered stack and tucking the pencil behind his ear Hunter waited for everyone to trickle in while reclining on a couch close to the front of the room. Let the games begin.

Nat looked up from Gulliver's Travels as the voice of the First Mate rang through the ship. Or former First Mate, rather. Nat hadn't known Jay long, but he was sorry to see him go. Jay was the type of person Nat was willing to follow a lot of places. Nathaniel stood, folding his glasses into his breast pocket and tossing the book onto his cot. Leaving his room, he took the stairs down.

Arriving at the Conference Room, he saw that Jay and Hunter Williams were already there. Williams' presence, as well as the stack of papers sitting on the table, and the pencil behind his ear, indicated who was running this meeting. That made it clear who had been selected to replace Jay. Nat hid his frown. The man was volatile, abrasive and loud. He was fairly sure he didn't like him, but it was possible that there was more to him. Nodding to the two of them, he took a seat at the table.

Rora knew this was going to take a bit, and both her and Hunter had agreed (!) that she ought to prep the ship to sit in the water. There would still be part of the crew on board, but the thought of losing power, or of not being able to get away in a bind was not a pleasant one, so Rora was making slight adjustments. If anything needed done, Echo would be able to do it.

She heard Jay's announcement, and felt a small pang of something she couldn't define. Rora was still sore from him, what had happened, what they'd done. They'd hurt each other, been unfair to each other, and now they were paying the price. But Rora could feel herself already dissipating that connection, leaving him behind, and she was both grateful and surprised that she was doing so.

Wiping off her hands, Rora made her way up to the conference room, seeing the men, and sat in one of the oversized chairs, waiting patiently for whatever it was that was going to happen.

Jay was pleasantly surprised to find that Williams was already in the conference room when he arrived. The war vet smiled slightly and greeted the younger man. Even though Jay was only four years older, nothing really at their age, the relatively youthful appearance of Hunter Williams was offset by Jay's.

Years on the front lines, most of the war actually, had given Jay an appearance of being much older then he actually was, and already Jay had begun to notice more pronounced crows feet around his eyes when he smiled. Stress and, yes he admitted it, worry had not helped in the past few days and Jay had not been sleeping well. He was decidedly not himself. The man gently seated himself as Nat and Rora arrived. He caught Nat's hastily covered frown.

"Evenin' Nat.

Rora he chose not to speak too, things that had passed between them, while may have been fixable at one time, were long past that point now. Jay felt a pang of regret as she walked into the room, but quickly buried it. A quick glance and a quickly covered scowl from Hunter, either ignored or unseen on Rora's part, almost made him chuckle. With those two at each others throats......it would almost be worth sticking around. It would be good for her, he decided, a few tastes of her own medicine.

With a smile, the now former First Mate leaned back in his chair. Those two were going to love this mission.

Hunter tried to keep his face neutral as people began to trickle into the room, but he couldn't help but flash a moment of irritation at the appearance of Rora. God this mission was going to be hell if only for her nagging at him both night and day. he didn't have an issue with Nat though, the man was quiet and did his job and didn't start dragging at all of Hunter's sore spots just like everyone else seemed to be doing.

Because Hunter wasn't normally as abrasive a personality as had been shown in the past week or so. Sure, he was always pretty blunt and let people know what he thought, but he usually had a crude little sense of humor about all of life's hardships. Who would have guessed that a ship full of Browncoats and Independent leaning folk would have driven him this far down the road of impatience. it was like they had a magic ability to hone in on what got a person ticking, and Rora was freaking in lead of the pack.

But, if he was going to do his new job well he had to put that behind him and work with everyone; no matter how much he wanted to bop them over the head with a two-by-four. Once the majority of the crew had assembled (there was bound to be a few stragglers) he glanced over to Jay. The former First Mate was going to have to start this ball rolling and maybe smooth over some spikes of anger at the news. After that was all worked out Hunter could dive into the Mission briefing this whole meeting really was about. They needed to be brought up to speed on everything he knew, and he needed to figure out who in the crew was best to fill the positions. This was going to end up being a lot of talking.

Jay cast a weary glance around the room, taking in the assembled faces of the crew. They seemed to be watching him, and as Hunter too looked over, Jay figured that it was high time that he started this glorious little shindig. He spoke form his chair, having leaned forwards to rest his arms, hands clasped in front of him, on the table top.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice.....I have an announcement to make, one that a few of you already know, but it needs to be known to all so that there can be no claiming otherwise. Im not going to be joining you for this upcoming mission, as most of you were told by the Cap'n at some point, things back on Silverhold need my attention and it cant wait. So, in the interim, Gwen and I have decided that Hunter Williams will be filling in as the temporary First Mate during my absence. Cap'n and I made this decision, and even though I am well aware of Mr. William's.......popularity...at the moment, y'all will follow any order like it was coming from me. is that understood?"

Jay waited for the head nods and the chorus of "yessir's" that acknowledged his mandate.

"Very good. Now unless the Cap'n's got anything to add, Mr. Williams will git on explaining what this new mission is all about.

Cora was skulking in the corner of the room, waiting for the announcement to be over so she could skulk even faster back to the MedBay. She was fast becoming aware that every day on the ship was just plain miserable. When she’d arrived she’d had far more nerves, far more neuroses too. But she was still optimistic, eager. Now she walked around with a face like thunder and an attitude which she didn’t think particularly suited her. Doubtless they’d all agree with this sentiment, what MUST they think of her now? If she were Irish, she might’ve been able to pull of that brooding but oddly charming thing which Dr. Lancaster had mastered and blame it on that. But she wasn’t. Pity.

The tentativeness that Coralyn waited for the announcement with melted into complete despair, and in one swift motion, she banged her head repeatedly against the wall behind her in utter defeat. Yes, she was more than relieved that Jay was going. But she’d have chosen a million and one Jays over Hunter Williams in a second. This was impossible, and maybe it was just her mood, but it felt deeply personal too. And now she had to wait to hear about this, this... mission. A mission from a man whom she was unconvinced knew his alphabet. Spectacular.

After adjusting her ponytail, she took a deep breath and raised a polite hand. Goodness, it was like being back in school. “May I please be excused? I need to clean up... something.”

Jean stopped mid-walk as he heard the announcement. ‘All crew’. Wait… did that include him? Great, now he wasn’t sure and he didn’t know if it’d be right for a kid to be walking into an adult’s meeting. The boy stood there for a few moments, contemplating what he should do. Well, they probably wouldn’t miss him even if he was, for some reason, supposed to go to the meeting, or whatever it was, and didn’t.

Buuuut his curiosity got the better of him again anyway, and he decided to check it out. The preteen walked over to the doorway of the conference room, hesitated for just a second, and then walked in quietly. He slowly looked around at the faces in the room, mainly to see if anyone was looking angry at him, in which case he would definitely leave right away.

He didn’t really want to draw too much attention to himself in their important meeting, but he decided he should say something to explain himself anyway. “I didn’t know if you meant me too but, I uh, well y’know, I was close by anyways,” Jean spoke quietly. He didn’t expect anyone to pay attention to what he was saying, unless they wanted him out that is.

"No. You can't." During the talking that Jay had given, Gwen had finally managed to pull herself out of bead long enough to get dressed in something other than her PJs. The woman still looked like someone had landed the entire Alliance fleet on her and it was exactly how she felt. Between coughs she leaned against the hatch frame not even sparing a look toward Cora. The woman wasn't leaving. "Y'all got a problem with this? Deal with it. I ain't having a single one of you fuck this up because you can't pull your heads outta your own asses long enough to get along."

No one ever said the Captain was the most friendly of people when she wasn't feeling good. Everything was riding on this mission. No exceptions.

When Jean entered in to the room she reached out musing his hair up before giving him a little nudge in to the room. Everyone was there that needed to be save their passenger and Rosalee. Giving a nod to Hunter to continue she shot one green eyed glare at the crew members she knew were going to be trouble before settling in to listen.

He could tell by the murmur of discontent in the room that this was going to be every bit as rocky as he had feared. The man inhaled heavily, preparing to launch into the briefing anyway and just ignore the fact that an in an entire room full of people not a single one of them was anywhere near happy to have him placed in a position of command. Such a happy place wasn't it? Opening his mouth to tell Cora as evenly and frankly as possible that if she left she would most likely be forfeiting her spot on the ship he was abruptly cut off by the strictest tone he had ever heard Gwen MacKenzie take. With a nod Hunter gave the slightly older woman a small smile of appreciation; that was actually the first time anyone on the Cressida had taken a stand to back him. Even if it was probably just the results of feeling (and looking) like hell; it gave him that little boost of confidence needed to set his charge ahead attitude back on straight.

Clearing his throat the man stood before them, spreading his papers out before him before laying both palms flat on the table and glancing at all their faces. "Guess that's my cue then ain't it. So you all've heard that we have our first mission handed down from the top. It's a retrieval..." Words trailed off for a moment, the tone he was used to taking with these sort of meetings just wasn't sitting well with him at the moment. Something was off; and it was probably that the crew wasn't actually listening to his words as much as fighting an internal battle as to how he had come to be standing in front of them. Which he needed them to get over, and quickly, because there was a lot of work ahead of them.

"Okay, Look. I'm well aware that I'm not some of ya'lls favorite person. But I'm not asking you to like me, your personal feelings can stay however you want them.

However, I do need each one of you to get past those feelings and do the jobs you all signed up to do. In return I'll do mine to the very best of my ability. Because this is way more important than any petty issues we got goin' on between us. Dŏng ma?
"

Having put his two cents worth of defense in for his new found position Hunter dropped his eyes back to the pages before him, shuffling through them until he found the sheet he wanted. "So. The mission is a retrieval. We go in using a predetermined cover provided for us, locate the target while maintaining said cover, and return the target to Cressida where we will await further instructions.

Priority 1 is to maintain your cover. I don't care if you have the target in your hands and can spit on the Cressida you're so close; if you have to turn around and throw it out an airlock in order to keep our identities secure, don't blink to do it.
" He paused to emphasize this point, there was no room for error on that.

"As for the specifics of the location, target and cover. In four days at 0600 hours the Cressida will rendezvous with the S. S. Bǐng Quān; a Luxury Scarab Class Cruise Vessel. You might have heard of it, it is a popular upper class vacation destination known for it's nightly circus. The away team will be boarding under the premise of joining the staff of the Bǐng Quān. They are expecting us, and the cover was originally devised with another team in mind. But due to unforeseen circumstances we will have to fill the spots and just make it work.

Any questions? Or does anyone need clarification to anything I've already gone over?
" He waited, eyes slowly scanning the room for a look of confusion or a raised hand, his manner completely professional and calm; a side of him that hadn't quite made it out into the light of day just yet. Planning to take in a few queries before continuing on and specifying the brand of cover and the target of retrieval as soon as they had been answered sufficiently. Once he had given out the mission basics he could take the time to interview the crew about skills they might have that could come in handy.

Coralyn's face flushed scarlet and she bit her lip, suddenly very interested in the condition of her shoes. It WAS like being back in school, and she'd given the wrong answer. Oh well, she could attribute some of of the snappiness to Gwen's condition, the woman was clearly not well. Drew's department really, but it didn't stop her form being concerned.

So she listened, the neutral, ashamed face twisting into a slight scowl as Hunter went on. By the conclusion her mouth was practically hanging open in shock. The Bǐng Quān? The Bǐng Quān!? Her opinion from her first day was proven absolutely right, they were all quite mad. They were going to get found out, arrested and riddled with bullets.. And IF they made it back on the Cressida alive where Cora would be waiting, then she'd have to pick them all out herself, like she was removing currants from a bloody cake. It was insanity. And only Gwen's glare was stopping her from blurting it out.

Sri heard the announcement from her shuttle and wondered if she was crew, if the call to come down referred to her as well. She doubted it, as she was fairly unwelcome aboard the vessel and sure as hell wasn't going to be invited to much of anything. Then again, it would do her some good to know exactly what all of the bastards around her were up to. She smoothed out her dress, a pretty red silk thing with all manners of sequins and rhinestones sewn into the bottom edges, where it flared out and took on a more orange-ish tint. She pulled her hair up quickly and secured it in place with two ornamental pins, the same deep red as her dress. Content that she looked well enough to go down and see the crew, she made her way toward the conference room.

She entered the room in her usual manner, doing her best to appear friendly and only getting glares and irritation in return. Crossing her arms and leaning against the doorway, she looked to Hunter Williams, as it appeared that he was the one in charge of this little "meeting."

"I realize that I am not a member of this crew, but as a passenger aboard this vessel I feel that it is necessary that I be informed of important information regarding the ship and our destinations. So please tell me why this meeting has been called and what exactly is going on."

Hunter had been looking away from the door about to take a question from one of the crew members when their oh so lovely passenger had pushed into the room past Gwen. Back still turned his face fell, eyes closing as the man tried to muster the patience necessary for the trying encounter he was about to engage in. Why in the hell did command think toting some arrogant froo froo alliance loving companion across the universe was an appropriate set up?! It was honestly beyond him, the woman offer absolutely nothing but irritation and the urge to hit things to the members of this crew. Granted, Hunter did the same, but he at least backed it up with mechanical skill, loyalty and a long track record in these kinds of excursions.

Turning back he plastered a polite smile on his face and glanced to the captain first, and quickly figured that in her current state playing nice with the yipping perfume scented luggage wasn't going to happen very easy. Being the official First Mate that made it his job. Protect the captain at all costs right? That even meant protecting her from herself. "Oh, Ms. Xiahou, weren't expectin' to see you. Just yer everyday typical crew briefing; working out schedules and the like. Pretty boring stuff that those working this ship have to sit through as part of the job. You know how it is. Paperwork and the like."

But it wasn't like they were going to be able to up and leave the Cressida without the woman noticing. And Hunter had figured a story as close to the truth as possible would be the least suspicious. "But seein' as you dragged yourself up here we may as well inform you now. The company got an urgent request for a job and we are the closest ship, so we will be altering the original flight schedule. Details are still being worked out, but most of the crew will be stepping over to a vessel called the Bing Quan for a few days to help supplement their staff. " It was true, in a rough sense, that is what they were doing. And there wasn't a single thing about the mission that should make her think otherwise. The best lies were always mostly vested in truth.

"Now if there isn't anything else Ms. Xiahou, we'll be getting back to the meeting, and will let you know as soon as we have a confirmed timeline."

Tom had never been a big fan of briefings at all. It meant he had to sit through an intense amount of talking and usually all he needed to know was something very short at the end. Everything else usually did not have to do with him or it was background information that was boring. Of course, it was incredibly important, but that did not stop it from being boring. It was a good day when he did not feel like falling asleep at a crew meeting. Okay, that was a lie. The meetings did tend to get interesting. There was always someone raring back to have a go at someone else. There would be screaming and shouting if he was lucky and it came as a very entertaining time. It just meant that he had to put up with the boring part to get to the good stuff, the part he was actually interested in.

It was pretty interesting so far with how everyone seemed to interact and how the Captain just snapped at everyone. Tom was doing his best to look bored in his chair and it was not hard when Hunter started to go on with background. The only thing that caught his interest was that they had to go undercover as a circus. It was interesting and he wanted to know more, but he knew that if he tried to rush things along, he'd get yelled at.

His gaze traveled over to the companion as she entered. She wasn't too bad looking, but lately, Tom's eyes were for Fi only, as much as he didn't want to admit it. She sounded polite with what she said, but Tom thought she also sounded like a snob. She was practically demanding to be told what was going on. He thought Hunter handled it well, but Tom wished that he would have at least told her off. That would have made it more interesting than it already was.

Tom jumped up from his seat and went over to where the woman was. "I'll escort you back to your ship.. bunk.. where ever you're staying," he said, crossing his arms over his chest rather awkwardly with his wrist in a cast. He said this not out of politeness, more out of that he thought this was supposed to be a crew meeting and she was only a passenger. There were way too many new people aboard Cressida. He was not one to be polite, but instead, he just wanted to get away for a few minutes, even if that meant escorting the companion to where she was staying.

Drew was late. He'd completely lost track of time...again. With how sick Gwen had been lately, Drew hadn't been getting the best sleep, and now with the additional paperwork of getting together fake identity physicals, he had his work cut out for him. Really, Fi had most of it down, but Drew needed to do his part.

Managing to avoid his wife would be the issue, though. However, there was some other issues happening. Ah, the Companion he'd heard so many things about. Not good things. Tom seemed to be handling it, though.

"'Scuse me," he said, moving into the room, moving to stand at the back wall near Gwen. He knew his part already, but he felt it important to be at these meetings.

Was that...Sri? Rora ducked a little lower in her seat as the Companion bustled in, trying to wedge her way into the crew meeting. Ugh. Definately Sri.

Rora hadn't met the woman personally, but she'd seen her at functions and the sort...her example had been used in classes at the Temple several times. The flashback to those times had Rora sinking even further in her chair. What was with the Companions anymore? They were crawling out of the woodwork! First Sidda, then Martha, now Sri?

Ugh. It took Rora effort to go back to paying attention to Hunter. Or, what was it? Aleksei? Her mood improved considerably with that thought. Except, they'd have to be married... not a thought she was really looking forward to. That would take a great deal of effort. She was still unsure how she'd manage it.

The Companion's eyebrows raised slightly at the mention of the Bing Quan. She hadn't enjoyed real luxury for weeks, and the liner that the crew would be boarding was one of the finest in all of the black! She glanced about the room quickly, taking note of the crew members there and their general reaction to her having intruded. Most seemed irritated with her presence, but one in particular, a pretty younger woman, had slid down into her chair quite visibly. Odd. She would have to look into it more later, when she had less important things than boarding the Bing Quan on her mind.

"I appreciate your honesty and quickness, Mr. Williams. I will leave you all to your work then, as I know it is not my business exactly how things get done, just that they do," she said, her thanks genuine. She had expected to be given some sort of run-around, or told to just get the hell out of the way. Being told the truth and so quickly made her feel a little better about the entire thing. Besides, the thought of getting a massage aboard the Bing Quan had put her in a much improved mood.

Looking to Mr. Fisher, she smiled politely. "While I find your offer to be charming, I'm quite sure that you're needed here, it being a required briefing and all. I think I can manage my way back just fine, thank you." She looked at Hunter. "Please let me know as soon as the times are confirmed, I look forward to getting a proper massage and perhaps making some purchases on the Bing Quan as soon as we get there."

Gorram woman, guăn nĭ zìjĭ de shì. As soon as she was out of sight Hunter was glaring after her. That was exactly what they didn't need... except... that did clear up quite a few little complications for them. Like justifying the Cressida returning for pickup at the end of the mission. Hunter had been struggling with that for the better part of an hour before the meeting. Clearing his throat Hunter turned back to the crew positioned about the table.

"Guess that makes Priority 2 keeping the hell away from that woman. Not that I figure any of ya'll'd be trying to do otherwise.

Now, back to where we were. The away team will be comprised of the Cap'n, Myself, Rora, Fi, Nat, Tom, Talia, Dr. Cardew and Jean.
" Hunter glanced to the boy offering a gentle smile as he handed out papers that detailed each person boarding the ship's cover. "That is if you want to Jean. We could definitely use the talents of someone that's grown up in the way you did, and I know we can trust you to do your part. But you don't have to go if ye don't want. Completely your decision, and we ain't gon' get mad if ye say no. Promise."

Glancing back to everyone else Hunter decided to finish up this little spiel. "As you can see, we're joining the Bing Quan as members of a circus. We're all going to have to focus on getting our acts down in the next few days with your partners as described on your sheet. The known information on our target will be sent to each of your cortex books shortly so that you can study it thoroughly. Ain't much, but its what we got to work with. Now unless you have any questions you're free to go."

Truth be told, Cora felt a little bad for Sri, even as Hunter managed to tactfully dismiss her. She probably wasn’t used to such uncouth and generally hostile reactions, same as Cora hadn’t been. She herself had had very little to do with Companions in her lifetime, but they were always in Roma, at functions, eateries, temples... occasionally at the hospital. They were a part of society, a part she’d always shown an adequate amount of respect to. Perhaps she should find her later, have a little chat, welcome her properly. Maybe she could even take some of the flowers she was trying to grow by the refrigerator and-wait, had he said her name? For the away team?! That couldn’t be more wrong. Suddenly paper was in her hand. “Hold on, hold on, hold on.” This was going too far, too quickly and it had to be nipped in the bud this instant. “I’m going to have to stay on the Cressida, Mr. Williams. I can’t go on the Bing Quan. My sister honeymooned on the Bing Quan. There are... there are people on that ship.” She gestured to the paper. “While I’m here, I’m quite happy to help in any way that falls under my jurisdiction, really I am.” She quickly searched through her pockets for her glasses, this couldn’t be the first day she’d ever forgotten them surely. She could barely read the wretched thing! All she could make out was the word ‘costume’. It didn’t bode well.

“And this really, really and truly does not. I don’t think I’m being unreasonable,” the clue was in the DOCTOR in her name. Besides, If her supposed ‘cover’ (God, she sounded like a spy!) was blown, as it easily could be, they were all probably doomed too.
