Always on the run
A familiar scent drifted into Anna's nostrils as she was flipping through the pages of an old cooking book that she found in one of the kitchen's cabinets. A violent curse escaped the woman's lips as she quickly turned around and shifted her attention back to the fire. Within seconds she had pulled the heavily smoking pan from the fire, but the damage was already done.

Using a fork to turn the meat around, Anna let out a sigh as she noticed that it was burned, almost black actually... Reaching for a knife the woman started to scrape off as much of the charred layer as possible, while she quickly looked in the direction of the common room. Luckily the hungry crew of the Cressida was still busy, doing whatever the hell they did and nobody had noticed the small accident.

Shaking her head, the woman mumbled, "Gorramit! Now I have to come up with some kind of sauce to cover up this mess." It wasn't that she liked to cook, she loved it actually... The woman just needed to tweak her skills if she wanted to fill the job requirement.

Throwing some random herbs and spices into a boiling pan of water, Anna stirred it with a spoon until it was thick enough to pass for a sauce. Just in time, because she heard the first crew members make their way into the common room. Quickly putting the meat on the readied plates, Anna made sure that the charred side was under before she added her sauce to it and smiled.

The end result didn't look half bad and Anna sincerely hoped that it wouldn't taste to bad. Picking up two plates, she walked towards the dinner table and yelled, "Food! Get ye asses here now it's warm!"

After Rosalee had run off in search of her dad, it had left Gwen with time to think a little. Time to think for a Captain like Gwen could sometimes be disastrous depending on what the thought process was. Right now it was all about her own little girl that was hidden safe away planetside. She would have been a little older than Rosie by now, and the few times within the last couple of months she had been able to contact her, had grown quite into a bright little girl. Drew would be lucky that it was enough to keep her temper toward him at bay. Even if she had searched the ship head to toe pretty sure the man was avoiding her once it was clear she had finally rolled out of bed.

Making her way toward the galley she allowed one brow to slightly raise at the.. interesting smells that were coming out of it and not to mention the newest crew member bellowing out to come and eat. She was pretty sure the 'get your asses in here now' comment was enough to get quite a few of the crew moving aside from the call of food. "Glad to see you're settling in. Finding everything you're needing in here?" The previous cooks had brought their own gear and took it all with them. Cressi had the basics.. but nothing overly fancy.

Coralyn had made a specific point of not eating in the galley for the last two days, but insatiable curiosity, along with politeness dictated that she should at least join them for their new chef’s first meal. She needn’t stay long, and she was rather hungry. So, despite the fact that she didn’t particularly appreciate Miss Rydell’s war cry as it reverberated around the ship, she went to her bunk, took off her white coat and washed her face. Gathering some notes to read over the meal, and distract herself from uncomfortable conversation, she set off again.

“Be courteous, calm and quiet.” Cora reminded herself, whispering it as a mantra as she made her way towards a rather unusual smell. A dish regional to a specific planet maybe? Interesting.

With a nervous smile she entered the galley and took her usual seat, nearest the corner. “Good evening, Captain. Miss Rydell. I am looking forward to trying your cuisine.”

"Ay Cap'n... This boat's kitchen is a whole lotta better than the last piece of junk I sailed on." Anna spoke as she placed a plate in front of their young captain and smiled, saying. "Deadwood's famous Fire-steak... Best damn food for a hungry crew."

Of course she lied, but what else could she do? Apologize for burning the meat? Anna wouldn't take that risk while they were still planet side. She needed this job, not for the money but to get out of here fast...

When one of the ship's doctors walked into the common room, Anna greeted the girl with a nod of her head and spoke, "Doc..." The word cuisine almost made her laugh, but Anna managed to resist that urge and handed the other plate to Coralyn with a grin playing on her features. The doctor looked like a classy kind of girl and Anna had a feeling that the girl would be up for a surprise.

After the little incident in the engine room Hunter headed for the galley as his daughter and the other mechanic headed off to play girl. A wave of tired washing over him and he mounted the stairs. First order of business was a large cup of coffee and a spot on one of those couches, and propping his feet up on the table. He was surprised to hear the bellow for food reverberating through the room as he stepped through the hatch. Had he really lost that much track of time?

A quiet eye took in the room before heading toward the sink. If he was going to eat he would have to scrub some of the grime off his hands. To his dismay, Coralyn was already there, but on the bright side so was the captain so maybe that would diffuse things a bit. He hadn't had the chance to get to know the cook at all, but with his track record so far he needed to find someone that didn't want him thrown off the boat the next time they stopped.

"The company spring for steaks for the lot of us?" He was smiling, and glanced at the captain as he passed her. They would be needing to talk at some point soon. Reaching the sink he ran the water hot, reaching for some soap and began to hack away at the oily black marks. "Maybe they thought to drop us a case of brews too, and 'taters on the side. I know I'd take to appreciating it." Once his hands were dirt free he settled in at the table keeping the captain between himself and the doctor. So much for a relaxing moment in the galley.

Taking the plate with the most enthusiastic “Thank you,” she could conjure up, Cora was going to tuck in immediately, despite the odd scent and the suspiciously dark meat. Their new cook seemed a little brash, but perhaps that was just confidence. She certainly carried herself well, and was obviously not worth offending if Cora could at all help it. Then suddenly, Hunter swaggered in, presumably straight from work. Oh no... Coralyn had been holding out a futile hope that he wouldn’t be present. It was too late to leave now and it wouldn’t be fair on Miss Rydell. And so she compensated by averting her eyes, which were automatically narrowed in distaste, and started sifting through her notes as though they were the most fascinating things in the world. At least she was at least half-certain that he wasn’t going to hurt her, but her suspicion was still that he was perfectly capable of it. Taking a sip from the water glass she’d collected from the counter, she tilted her head towards Gwen, waiting for him to stop speaking.

“I’m afraid I’m going to have to at least make a start on these new inoculation shots soon.” she said, as casually as she could, pointing to her list of vaccinations. “It seems that every time we land, there’s another exotic disease to cope with.” They couldn't be too careful with children and shudder, ferrets on board.

Picking up her fork, Cora began carefully cutting up her meat. Frankly, it was like sawing through wood, and it was impossible to do gracefully. With a small shake of cautionary salt, she raised a piece to her lips...

It had been a little while since the encounter with Fi, Jean wasn't sure if he should still be looking for aid in the galley or what. He hadn’t seen Rosalee at all since the incident either, he hoped she was okay. Also… the boy was feeling pretty bad about losing the little girl’s hammer during all the craziness earlier. He'd have to find it, or else find her another one.

He could smell a weird aroma coming from the galley as he approached it... but he wasn’t able to decide whether it smelled good or bad to him. It sure didn’t smell like Martha’s cooking had when she had been there, but then again, he wasn't a cook, what did he know?

“Oh. Hello,” he greeted the new cook as he entered the galley. Walking over to the table, he sat down in one of the unoccupied seats. Once the doctor had finished her sentence, he decided to ask if anyone knew the other child’s whereabouts. “Has anyone seen Rosalee?” Jean asked the members of the crew who were present in the galley, his tone sounded more like he was asking out of curiosity than out of worry. “It’s just that, Miss Fi seemed pretty mad earlier…”

...no grenades. We're robbin the place, not occupying it.
Jay poked his head into the Galley, wrinkling his nose at the unmistakable smell of charred meat. "What happened in.....oh, dinner!" he abruptly stopped mid sentence as he saw the new cook passing out plates.

Realizing his stomach was making noises, and that he hadn't eaten since earlier in the day, he pulled out a chair and sat across from Cora, dutifully trying to avoid eye contact. He also would use this opportunity to announce Hunter's new position to the crew, once they were all assembled

Hunter nodded his thanks to the cook as she settled a plate in front of him. Quickly taking up his knife and fork he went at the food with enthusiasm, he hadn't realized just how hungry he was until sitting at the table. It took him a fair bit of hacking away to get through the meat, much more than he was expecting. But hey, she had said 'fire-steak' so that was probably normal right? Popping a decently sized bite into his mouth Hunter settled back into his chair, allowing his eyes to trace over each crew member at the table`as he tried to chew. This was possibly the worst steak he'd ever, ever had the displeasure of eating.

Laughter danced in his eyes as he finally managed to work it enough that he could swallow; sending the cook an amused look. "Sure do got a lot of fire to it, don't it? Although I think 'Deadwood' might just have been playin' jokes about the sauce. Seems threatenin' to jump up all alive like to me." If he was going to be honest, Mrs. Rydell was a fairly intimidating looking woman. She reminded the mechanic quite a bit of his Drill Sargent from back in basic; but even in training all the punishments in the world hadn't been able to seal that mouth of his closed. If he thought the food was gross he was going to say it; at least he'd done it in a good natured way.

Pushing back from the table he decided that the coffee he'd originally been aiming for would be really helpful in washing this meal down. Jeans concern for his daughter made him pause just behind the youth's chair, smiling kindly down to him "She's doin' fine and off with Mrs. Rora getting her jumper all stitched up. What ever trouble she dragged you into I ain't sure I want to know." He ruffled the kids hair a bit before stepping over to the coffee pot and pulling out a mug. "You did a fair good job keeping that little trouble maker breathing for me though. 'Specially with Fi tearing after her like she was. Means I owe you a darn big thanks and one of them Ice Planet treats next time we set down planetside Jean."

Coffee in hand Hunter settled back into his chair. Deciding that if he was ever going to somehow come to terms with Cora, no matter how much her comments about him being 'just like them' grated all of his pride, that it would have to happen with a lot of other people in the room. Might not even work, but trying to be civil at the dinner table wouldn't kill him. He still wasn't looking forward to the physical, he'd done a fairly good job avoiding it so far, but Rosie was a kid and needed to get herself all those shots. "You got a good time I can send the little princess of terror down at you Doc? She ain't had all that jabbin' ya'll so like to do poked at her yet, and rumor has it that stuff's actually good for kids."

Closing her mouth around the meat, Cora’s eyes widened for a moment in revulsion. Oh dear Lord, it was awful. No, no it was probably toxic. Determined that her her discomfort would not become evident, lest she hurt the pride or feelings of their cook, she pulled a fresh handkerchief from her pocket and gently dabbed her lips. Swallow, swallow, swallow, swallow.. she did. Albeit with a massive gulp of water. She was certainly going to wait a good five minutes before she repeated the process. Then Jean wandered in with that slightly cautious air that she identified with so well, and she glanced up to smile at the boy. Really he was so sweet and helpful, Cora hoped there’d be some sort of positive influence on Rosalee.“Hello Jean.” She said quietly.

However if she thought she was getting a break from being uncomfortable, Cora was disappointed. First Jay walked in, and she resorted to reading the same sentence 20 times. Then Hunter make a ‘humorous’ gripe about the food which she found decidedly inappropriate, considering the effort that went into cooking for 12 on your first day. And then, and no she was not imagining this, he talked to her. Casually. Like he hadn’t behaved like the nastiest brute ever to draw breath. Well if he thought she was going to start behaving amicably without an apology, he was quite mistaken.

Coralyn’s first thought was to leave the room again. Her second, taking the words in, was a stab of fear at what planet side diseases that cherubic little terror was potentially scampering about with. As for parenting classes that specifically taught you not to allow your children to carry guns and irritate their seniors... well that wasn’t yet in her jurisdiction.“I’d appreciate it if you’d send her along as soon as possible, for inoculations and a full and routine check-up, Mr Williams.” She said coolly, her eyes flicking up to meet his for just a moment. “You needn’t worry, I specialised in paediatrics.” Her piece said, she shut up again and re-busied herself with her notes.

Gwen nodded her head, listening as Cora spoke to her and as the others moved about. Her attention was fully on the Cortex book in her hand. Sometime during the time since she had entered the galley the thing had pinged letting her know there was a message waiting. When Gwen had started to read what smile was upon her face had slowly started to slide away back in to an expression the others knew was work related. All work and no play made the Captain a very busy woman. "Yeah.. get on that, Cora. Don't want no one getting sick..."

The red head didn't even look up as a plate was put in front of her. It smelled... interesting to be on the polite side. However it was one of those blessings that Gwen rarely got to eat with her crew unless someone dragged her out of her office. Just from some of the sounds around her she was pleased that she'd be making a quick get away soon. Not that she doubted Anna's cooking skills. She had come highly recommended after all.

"Hey, Hunter? That crate you had us drag on still down in the hold?"

”Hello, Miss Coralyn,” Jean smiled, yet he wondered why she looked so uncomfortable whenever Hunter was there, despite the fact that he hadn’t even been on the ship for very long. Sure, they had been arguing just the other day, but that didn't seem to be enough to make them act so strange towards eachother.

The boy was happy, and relieved, to hear that Rosalee was safe and sound. A bright smile appeared on his face when Hunter ruffled his hair because he realized the man wasn’t mad at either of them. Not only was he not angry, he was thanking Jean for keeping an eye on his daughter. Well, it’s not like the boy had really done anything, he had tried to save her from Fi, but still, he failed. The only thing that he had truly ‘accomplished’ was losing Rosalee’s hammer. “I didn’t do much. Couldn’t really keep her outta trouble or away from Miss Fi,” upon speaking the next sentence he lowered his voice. “But I think Miss Fi mighta been overreactin’ anyway,” he shrugged. “I feel awful about losin’ Rosalee’s hammer though…”

Still sitting at the table, the boy didn’t move to get any food, because, from the sound of it, it wasn’t so good. Not that he was being picky, he just wasn’t particularly hungry at the moment and so he wasn't about to take any chances. “Ice planet treat, sir?” Jean was intrigued. Truthfully, he could’ve sworn he had heard the name before but he couldn’t be sure. Growing up, he had never been able to buy sweets or anything… but they had always looked and smelled so good. “I’d love to try one,” he grinned.

Drew had picked up a couple copies of the latest magazine for Docs, one for Cora, another for himself. His fingers darted across the electronic paper, flipping to the next page for him. Well, if they needed a few things, this'd let 'em know it.

He stepped into the Galley, a dark frown crossing his features. "Did som'n burn a damn good steak?" His eyes darted to the new cook. Someone said something about a Deadwood specialty, and Drew shook his head. "That's a gorram crime if'n they call't a 'specialty.'" He handed the other copy to Cora before taking a seat next to Gwen.

A plate was set in front of him, and his senses went nuts. There was something wrong with this picture...everything, really. He raised an eyebrow, tossing a look to Gwen. "Aye...what's in this...sauce?" he asked wearily.

Drew didn't want to burn bridges with the new crew members, but they just seemed to want to get on his bad side. Burning a steak was a crime in the first degree in his book, no matter the excuses laid out. And the sauce? It smelled like flowery acid...

Never had an Ice Treat? Hunter felt bad for the kid, growing up parentless like he had. Made you learn things kids shouldn't know far too early, and miss out on just being silly and carefree. Of all the orphans running about the border planets he was lucky to have found a place like the Cressida. Maybe now he'd get a chance to just kick back for a little while. "The way Fi was griping I figure you probably did a whole lot by just bein' there kid. And I got plenty of hammers she can use, it's not lost forever either. Not like it up and walked off the ship! You come get me when we set down and I'll see about the treats hmm?"

Another, smaller, bite of steak and a swig of coffee to wash it down. "I'll bring her down in the morning then." And that was that. His duty to try and be pleasant pushing him as far as it could. Now he could just ignore her and go on about his evening, maybe escape once he had choked down the rest of this and go try and take a stab at figuring out what the hell had just happened with him and Rora. He could use taking Rosie to see the Doctor as a fair excuse to avoid the other mechanic for the morning. Although he still wasn't sure which woman grated him more. Lady passive aggressive with a twist of pushover with whom he had to pretend to be pleasant, or the raging hormonal queen of crazy that he had to share his work space with. Neither were fun, and both gave him a headache.

The little mental detour he had been taking in which he systematically ripped them both apart was brought to an quick and sudden halt. What had the captain said? The crate? His crate, the one he had been lugging around going on three months now in order to deliver to another underground contact? What did she need to know about that for? It had been a long standing mission, simple transport, but his mission all the same and he was going to complete it without hitch. The captain didn't get to muck about with that even if she was his captain. He didn't even know what was in the box and had learned a long time before not to ask.

Shooting her a nondescript sideways look he kept his hands busy with his food, keeping his manner relaxed and conversational as if she had simply asked him about the weather on Shadow or the results of a sports tournament. "Yeah its around. Not much space for it up in the bunk. You need somethin' from down there?" In other words, what the heck did she want with his crate?

All the while Gwen's green eyes never moved away from the Cortex book in her hand. Whatever was there on the screen was important enough to hold the Captain's attention over anything else that was going on around them. Except for the man beside of her. As the words spilled out of Drew's mouth one slender brow slowly climbed higher on to her forehead. Sure just from the sounds about them the food wasn't all that great, but she expected him to behave not outright balk at the meal. Raising her left hand without batting an eye the woman he called wife hauled around popping him on the back of his head. Gwen was sure the two would have words later and she was quite looking forward to it.

As soon as the first word, 'yeah', was out of Hunter's mouth the older woman was moving. Never once did her eyes move from the book knowing the quickest path down to the cargo hold by heart. Not once did she even respond as to why she was asking. If he put two and two together he might realize that her asking was part in course from what she was reading. Her face held a serious note as she moved out of the galley without another word to anyone.

Drew ducked his head in response. "Ow! Gorrammit..." he muttered, knowing that he deserved it. He just weren't used to no wife putting him in his ruttin' place. He grumbled under is breath, cutting the charred meat in front of him with vigor. He took a bite, and not a moment later, brought his napkin to his mouth and nondescriptly spit it back out.

He wasn't used to fine dining by any means, but that woman was no cook, and if she was, she needed to learn her trade better. [i[Much[/i] better.

Drew looked up as Gwen stood silently and made her way toward the cargo bay. Seeing his out, he frowned, "Red?" and stood, following her.

Thank the good lord.

With a calm nod at Hunter’s words, Cora was actually managing to engross herself in her work, having cleared that little hurdle. Then Drew wandered in, and the sudden ‘thud’ of a magazine made her nearly jump clean out her seat for, oh, the tenth time?

“Thank you ever so much!” she exclaimed, her mood improved tenfold. Housewives might still like their catalogues, Companions could pore over the latest couture and men seemed to revel in more distasteful, clotheless fair. But show Coralyn the latest updates, periodicals and articles on medicine and she was positively ecstatic. Flipping straight to the centre, her eyes turned as wide as saucers when she saw the introduction of new operating equipment. These new simulators could replicate an entire blueprint of a body down to the cubic millimetre. Her mouth nearly watered at the thought. Now if only they had ridiculous amounts of money. If only people on board would rupture enough kidneys to make it worth their while...

“Dr. Lancaster, did you see!? It's incredible, they’ve got a-oh... oh. Right. Ok.” He was gone. So was Gwen and Hunter too. She hoped it wasn’t her. Must be the food? God, she hoped it was the food.
