It had been at least thirty minutes since Gwen had forced herself to walk out of medial with a smile saying everything was fine. Well.. her head was still pounding, if not as bad, but it was. When she had reached the meeting room the woman had collapsed in to one of the chairs not caring hap hazard she looked sprawled out in the seat with her hands covering her face. Why did things always have to be complicated? Everything would have been easier to deal with if the near constant headache would just go away. Gwen didn't even need to look as she moved herself closer to the table kicking her feet back and letting the rolling chair follow suit. Oh she'd slept like that before, feet propped up on the table and slumped down in the chair. They weren't the most comfortable of seats but they worked well enough. "I so need a ruttin' vacation..." she groaned to herself not paying attention to anyone coming in or out of the room. There was to much to do for that of course. She'd only get a form of vacation when this was over or when she was dead. Hopefully it would have been the first and not the later. As much as some people thought that Gwen MacKenzie might have had a death wish it was quite the opposite. |

Jay slipped quietly into the conference room and found exactly who he had been hoping to find there. Having plotted the route with Tom and Echo back to Silverhold Colony, time was drawing to a close for Jay Andhek and he needed to choose his successor...so to speak. Unfortunately for the First Mate, Gwen looked like she had just fought a bear.....and lost, and by her slumped posture she was either asleep or soon would be. he leaned against the frame of the hatch. "I can come back if this isnt a good time...." |

Even though her eyes were closed the red head motioned toward one of the chairs at the table without so much as moving from her position. Knowing her she probably wouldn't. "Nah.. Come on in. You know how it goes here. Work, work, work. Just... don't tell Cora or Drew you actually saw me working for another two and a half hours. Okay?" Lowering her hands to her lap the Captain eyed her First Mate. To say that Gwen had been pissed off when Jay had told her he needed to leave was an understatement. All that resentment and anger she had toward her older brother for leaving their family had bubbled up. It had taken all her doing to keep from socking him then and there with threats of an airlock. Even if he had said he would come back, it still stung. Deep. "Y'all get everything taken care of up top?" Edited by Jay Andhek, Jan 29 2010, 09:45 PM.

Jay nodded and sank into the indicated chair, dropping a stack of dossier folders on the table with a thwooap. He rubbed the bridge of his nose before leaning back into the chair, refraining from putting his feet up for the time being. "Dont worry Gwen...me'an Cora probably aint gonna be speaking for a while something tells me, and Drew's 'ur husband, he'll know anyways. Aint seen him though, so no worries." He opened one of the folders and then closed it, looking up at Gwen, who was still reclined in her chair, albeit her eyes were now open and locked in his direction. "It will only be for a few months Gwen. Oversee the turn-over of the cattle facility and get the new family settled in. Whole lot of paperwork that cant be transmitted over the cortex...." he paused, "I dont have to go though, if y'all need me that bad..." The unspoken offer was there. It was up to Gwen how she chose to proceed. if she asked him to stay, the ranch would keep and he would hire, at great expense yes, a third party to oversee the turn over. "Jay, you know how much I need you here... but you had this in the books before it even came about." Sighing Gwen was soon moving her feet off the table motioning toward the folders that he had brought with him. It still didn't settle right with her though. Gwen was a big girl. She'd deal with this as she did everything else- store it up and let it explode at some point in time. With her hand she motioned toward the paperwork he had brought with him. "What you and Cora on about this time? Hell, Jay, girl don't need noone else causing her trouble. I already gotta figure out a way to get her and Hunter back on terms." A person didn't have to be blind to see what was going on though. Ever since Rora had turned him down... Maybe the break from the ship could be good for them. "I'm already doin my best to try keepin her here. We need good doctors on this boat and some of the places we drop at. Can't afford to lose her." Drew was another matter though. He'd just as soon come bursting in the room and drag her back to medical or their bunk. As much as she loved the man... he was sometimes as hard headed as she. |

"Best not to go into it now Cap'n...might be nothin', just a feeling I shouldnt have done something s'all. You should talk to her though Gwen....she seems mighty set on leavin' after them words with that hot headed new engineer of yours." With that, Jay tossed the folders in her direction, Hunter Williams newly completed dossier on the top of the heap. He watched Gwen pick it up and raise an eyebrow at his unspoken selection, especially coming on the heels of what he had said. "I was initially gonna recommend Fi for the spot, but yah need her attention elsewhere, Drew is your husband an' that aint right for crew moral. Hunter is new and sometimes hot headed, but I read his file, and his war record. He'll get the job done till I can get back. Edited by Jay Andhek, Jan 29 2010, 10:31 PM.

That got both of Gwen's brows climbing high as she picked up the folder. Opening it up she glanced over the contents with half interest. She could name it all in there just like she could recite anyones records on the ship. It was just a little surprising that he could have picked, of all people, Hunter for the position of First Mate until he returned. Fi was needed elsehwere. Drew was out for the running just because they were married. Rora was needed as the mechanic as well Nate on security. Nat would have been ideal but the idea of taking a position higher than what she was used to was not an option even during the War. Cora was... she'd not ask her to do that. It honestly left just one person whom she was going to have to set straight. Hunter Williams. "You know he kinda reminds me of Swayer. That no holds barred attitude with a chip on his shoulder. I'm glad he got his own position elsewhere. He really shaped up to be a good man after a spell." Not that she was expecting Hunter to do that. Gwen had known the man on and off for some years.. mostly during the War. He still had the same hyperactive attitude as he had even then as a youth. Mayne this was what he needed as well to help him grow a little more. "You sure about this, Andhek? Until you come back?" |

Jay sat back in the chair as Gwen looked over the file, and by looked over he meant her cursory glance before she closed it and tossed it back to the table top. He smiled as she mentioned Sawyer. That was back in the early days...just about a year ago now. Hell how time flew But as she asked for final confirmation, Jay nodded, cracking a little grin. "You should be able to keep him in line Gwen. Kinda like when I first signed on....you remember what I used to be like. Jay was, of course, kidding; but he knew Gwen would get the message. "Hunter Williams is silly and he's ignorant, but he's got guts, and guts is enough.......he'll do nicely, Im sure of it." He leaned back in the chair again, but then sat upright as he remembered something, smiling and pointing a finger in Gwens direction. "But dont be lettin' him get to comfy with all them privileges.....I'll be wanting the job back when I get done on Silverhold." Jay chuckled as he waited for her reply, mostly at his little joke about privileges. Edited by Jay Andhek, Jan 29 2010, 10:55 PM.

Gwen snorted a laugh. Was he being serious? If Jay was a handful, which he was a times, in the way he was meaning then Gwen was a saint in disguise. But slowly she nodded her head in agreement. Jay had faith in the younger man on being able to handle the position until he returned- that was the key here. Now it was going to be a matter of Hunter actually accepting the position and that of the crew. Sprout was new. Sure Gwen knew him but knowing someone didn't mean anything. "They better like this over the previous discussion. I don't think I can take any more yelling and I don't feel like being pricked more with damned needles over it. Which means you get to break the news to Hunter and to the others. Tomorrow would do. As long as it was before he left. |

"No one likes getting pricked with needles Gwen." Jay shot her a sympathetic smile as his Cap'n slumped back in her chair. He stood, gathering the files and returning them to their homes in the conference room filing cabinet. "I'll break the news to Williams tomorrow then. No sense in finding him now, little late in the evening for all that anyways. Tell the rest of the crew at dinner. He will be fine Gwen, and I'll be back in a few months. If things start to go sour, you know where to reach me. Send a wave, I'll come runnin'." He passed behind her chair and placed a friendly hand on her shoulder, giving it a slight pat. "Try not to stay up too much longer Cap'n. You look terrible." And with that, Jay tossed her a wink and smirk as he walked out of the room. |

Pocket Sized Fatalities
|
Fi stood outside the room, she'd been listening to their conversation from pretty much the beginning. It was mighty pretty of Jay to say she was needed elsewhere, and it was even true, but a better truth was that Fi wasn't cut out for leading. In time of war she'd pick up where it was needed, but a small crew like this one with emotions and mouths flying off all the time .... She was better off as Gwen's friend and employee. Less chance of a mutiny leading to shoving Echo or Cora out the airlock. "Don't do nothin' stupid out there dirtside. I'm not gonna be there to have your back this time," Not like she'd had his back in the war, not like he'd had hers. He was the man that had taught her to shoot a gun, and now she was known for her pinpoint aim. She couldn't handle much more emotion than that. The little blond pressed her lips tightly together and slipped in to sit across from Gwen instead, ignoring Jay's blue eyes. "Eventually little doc's gonna stop believing us when we say we're all right," Fi stretched her arms up high and leaned back before crossing her arms, tossing a small bundle in front of the woman. She'd made oatmeal raisin cookies. "Still, it'll be nice to get the early releases while we can," Fi didn't have to mention that it would likely be soon that the woman realized she couldn't believe the pretty lies their mouths told about the rest of their body. To easy to grit your teeth and pretend it was all fine. "He's right you know," Again Fi didn't have to mention names or what it was about. Gwen likely knew that Fi had been eavesdropping. She knew most of Fi's habits, just as Fi knew most of hers. 2 years on the Cressi had taught them a lot about each other. "Hunters a good fit for temp duty. He's got the background, the attitudes shit, but he's only filling in. I'm better for heckling and taunting and keeping Hunter in line, from the meeting it looks like you'll need all the help you can get," Fi gave the older woman a teasing smirk. She had way too much she was needing to do for the Cap'n and for the resistance. Fi wasn't just a communications specialist, she was a relay messenger, she was decrypting and encoding messages and passing them along to the proper parties. She was decoding a damned disc that had more viruses than a disgraced companion and she was keeping a close eye on where various supply shipments were going and who was watching those. Of course that was partly because she couldn't hand the jobs off to anyone else. If the war came on she'd been swept off the Cressi and to somewhere the Core couldn't get hold of her. She knew too much. It was that simple. Too many people with that much knowledge couldn't be in the same place, she and Gwen likely would be split up. Fi wasn't sure how she felt about that. |

The petite blonde had an almost sad look on her face as she gazed up at him, trying to look disinterested in the process. Jay was decidedly not surprised to find Fi standing outside the hatch as he walked out. He had trained her well, and she had had ample opportunity to expand on that training since the war.....no, he wasn't surprised. She had been one of his better scouts, when he had allowed it...hell, even when he hadnt allowed it. Tellin' Fi not to do something she had set her mind too was like trying to stop the sky from being blue or tellin' a bird to stop flyin'. He gave her a soft smile. "Dont you go worrying about me now xiăo mèimèi, you wont even have time to miss me. Besides, he winked at her, we both know Im just too damn pretty for God to let anything happen to me, howdayou think I made it through the war." He chuckled softly, turning to go, but he turned again to speak a few final words. The smirk was gone, replaced with quiet seriousness and concern. Fi was about as close to family as he had in the verse. Sure there was the crew and most of them were vets, but he and Fi had served together....he'd helped her grow up. "You take care of yourself Fi. This mission y'all are gonna be embarking on could go sour real fast and bad. I expect you to be whole when I get back. Cant go drinking fine Silverhold Whiskey alone.
