too damn pretty to die
Rora felt numb as Gwen's words settled over her.

She had no problem staying and fighting with the rest of the crew. Rora was part of the Cressie, and she had complete and total faith in Gwen and the team she'd assembled...save for a certain mechanic. But with all that was coming, she'd set her opinions on twine aside. She'd caught the comment Gwen had said, most likely for her benefit.

But Jay was leaving. Jay was leaving? Why did that not want to compute in her mind? Jay wasn't supposed to leave. He was part of this ship. If anyone ought to leave, it should've been her, not him. That made more sense than she would've liked to admit.

The mechanic grew silent as the chaos spread around her. Not watching him, but knowing what was happening, Rora took a shallow breath as Jay left to see to...Cora. The universe seemed to quiet in her mind as, all at once, she realized it really was over. She'd caused it, she admitted, but she had never thought she would feel this way, this uncomfortable hollow feeling threatening to swallow her whole.

Rora stood, her stance one of someone that knew how to command the attention of a room, her hands clasped in front of her. "Captain," she said, nodding her head to the redhead, "I'm at your service for whatever you require. If you'll excuse me, I've things that need tending to."

She'd entered her safe mode, one that conveniently had a name, one she'd willingly cast off in favor of this life, this life that was beginning to hurt more than her previous one.

Companion.

Honestly, Talia was a little surprised that Hunter backed down so easily. However, it didn't take long for her to chalk it up to their mutual respect for each other and she soon put it out of her mind. The woman looked over his shoulder to the kid at the table, smiling a bit and nodding, ”Hey there. Do me a favor an' try t' stay out o' angry men's ways in the future, will you?” Her tone had pulled a complete one-eighty, softening to a reassuring and gentle undertone. Then she turned her attention back to her friend, the smile turning understanding.

”You c'n rough me up all you want later.” She said, returning the grin and giving him a gentle fist to the shoulder—the one she hadn't bruised. Although many of the people who didn't know her yet would probably take that the wrong way, she meant nothing more than to accept his offer to spar. They hadn't done it in all too long, and the truth was she had a few harsh feelings to bully out herself.

With that, Natalia stepped away from him, moving back to her former position against the wall and nodding to Gwen as Jay left. Gwen already knew the Corporal was behind her one hundred percent—they'd had this conversation when Talia'd first got the job—but sometimes a group needed someone to speak out positively before they all could. Not to mention, the captain could do with a bit of slack. ”You know I got your back, Captain. I'm stayin', and whatever you need I'm here.” A careless grin slid onto her features, but her gaze told the room she was dead serious.

"Anyone else wanna say their piece?"

Gwen's head was pounding making the noises of everyone in the galley as if they were talking in water. Raising her right hand she scrubbed at her brow trying to will it away but finding it not working. So far it had been the worst one since she could remember. No one ever said the job or even being in the Underground was not going to be stressful, but this took the cake. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she lowered her hand wishing the lights weren't so damned bright. "All right. If you do or need to ask me things I'll be in the meeting room working."

Turning she felt something warm touch her bottom lip. Again Gwen raised her hand touching her upper lip and pulling fingers back to find them red. For an instant the captain simply stood there before her eyes quickly snapped to Drew. Oh that couldn't be good. When she tried taking a step her knees almost buckled sending her toward the galley floor. "Shit."

It only took Drew a step to catch her, cursing as he did so. She'd paled considerably, and he could feel a tight sort of panic rising in his chest. "Some'n go get Coralyn, now. Tell 'er I ain't standin' for no gripin', she's either a Doctor, ging shao, or she ain't."

He knew himself, he knew how much he was willing to do to save Gwen, even from any amount of pain, and he needed another Doc to keep him straightened out.

Drew grabbed at a towel on the counter, carefully setting Gwen on the floor, his hands moving swiftly as he checked her pulse. "Gorrammit, Gwen, can't you ever slow down?"

A lot happened very quickly in the next few moments. Hunter ended up one good sparring session, one that he well needed, down a first mate that he had been expecting to stay with them until the end, and gaining respect for quite a few members of the crew. Surprisingly enough even the woman that had come at him like a screaming whirlwind of tantrums had caused his brow to tweak with her words. Looked like she really was loyal to the place, they might get along just yet.

Shit, what was he thinking. That wasn't going to change a damn thing between the two mechanics.

If they didn't have a mission yet then that gave him a chance to re-examine the entire set up in the engine room. After all, this wasn't going to be some cut and dry transport ship any more. They were gonna have to... ō, zhè zhēn shì gè kuàilè de jìnzhăn. Gwen started to go down in what seemed like slow motion. Why Hunter hadn't a clue but the instant Drew looked up and didn't have complete confidence on his face the man was already moving towards the hatch Jay and Cora had escaped through at a full run. You didn't survive a war without quick reflexes in the face of the unexpected and Hunter was completely useless standing in that room. He had to go get the other doctor and fast, didn't matter his feelings towards her currently if she could help Gwen. He yelled over his shoulder to the others. "I got it! We'll meet you in the med bay!"

"I'll slow down the day you rest me in the ground, Drew, now get me the hell off the floor." Pressing the cloth under her nose she moved to pinch it on the bridge hoping Lancaster would help her stand before she tried to do it on her own.

Hunter barreling past was enough to make her wince at the sound of thudding feet on metal flooring. If she could have convinced someone to put rugs down or even carpet she would have been happy but, apparently, its not good on a ship. So with a sign she lowered the towel soon feeling the warmth on her lip again before replacing it right back. "I'm fine. Just got a little light headed is all."

Why did she feel like she was about an inch tall right now? It was enough to make her wince again. "Y'all go on about your tasks. Fi? Will you see t' gettin' supper up if y'all are done? Echo go see 'bout finding Jay so you and Tom can start plotting out where he needs t' be. Jean, will you be a dear an' help Fi out please?" No rest for the wicked- always an order to give.

Gwen started to fall, and Talia wasted no time in her reaction. She rushed forward, dodging Hunter and only slowing once Drew had the captain firmly in his grip. Still in an instant she was beside the doctor and speaking in a low tone, ”Tell me what to do, Doc, an' I'll do it. You need help gettin' her to the med bay?” She was the picture of calm, her composure not breaking one bit under the sudden rush of concern for her old friend. She was aware the the doctor didn't know her that well yet, but that didn't matter—no way in hell was he gonna tell her to back off and do nothing while Gwen was unwell.

The young woman lowered herself, carefully slipping an arm under her captain's and making ready to help Drew gently haul Gwen to her feet. Talia noticed she had been omitted from the general order-giving, and wondered whether there was just nothing for her to do, or whether Gwen just wasn't used to her presence yet. But that was unimportant—it wasn't like the corporal was gonna do anything other than try to help her Captain out. ”The hell you been doin' t' yourself t' get this bad, Gwen?” She asked, a smiled breaking out despite the situation, ”No wonder you been so eager t' hire more help.”

Drew didn't say anything, merely nodding to Natalia. "Ready, Talia. One, two, lift." His voice was surprisingly calm.

"Red, shut it. I'm judgin' you unfit ta be captain at the moment, and I'm takin' over til Jay gets his arse in here." He knew it'd tick her off, maybe even accelerate the situation, but he wasn't about to let her make a stupid mistake such as not listening to him. "I know I'm married t'ya and all, but I do know what I'm talkin' of."

Tick her off was an understatement. Red painted her cheeks and the tips of her ears as she all but glowered at the doctor over the cloth still pressed to her nose. If she had felt like it she would have started trying to squirm away from both of them and walk herself down to medical if they were still insistent on her going there. Where did he get off removing her from command? It was going to be a cold, cold bed that he was going to find until her temper resided. "Gorramit, Drew! Talia! Put me the hell down now!"

She didn't care if it made her head hurt more. This wasn't fair or even just in her opinion! "I've been doing my ruttin' job is what I've been doing!" Huffing and puffing the red head started to try to get away from the two. "Nate- take Talia here and show her where everything security wise is at on the ship will you? Screw the chain- someone give me a wok so I can beat some since in to my husband's head that I'm fine and still ruttin command."

Talia nodded and pulled her Captain up in unison with the good doctor, internally praising the fact that he hadn't snapped and ordered her away. It would have been very awkward to get into verbal combat with the doctor whilst holding onto a less-than-shiny Gwen. What she didn't praise, however, was the man's choice to remove Gwen from command, even temporarily. That would go over well. Yup. There it was. The Corporal held on more firmly to her Captain, shaking her head resolutely and opening her mouth in a breathy grin.

”No way no how, Missie. Las' I heard doctor's orders one-upped everythin'.” She said, her gaiety hardly expressed in the firm glare she was sending her old friend's way. ”We're getting' you down t' the med bay, whether you like it or not, Gwen,” She continued, her voice growing harsher, ”Might as well make it easy on yourself—" Gwen was still talking. "Gorramit, you're bleedin' She added the last bit in to shut the other woman up. She'd hardly missed that their fair Captain was letting blood, and that was no state to keep herself in.

Suddenly she was very glad she'd gotten onto this ship when she had. Gwen had a habit of trying to work herself to death. Looking up to Drew, Talia flashed him a grin and nodded, ”Ready when you are. Should probably get it over with, though.”

Pocket Sized Fatalities
Fi took a deep breath and stood up, pulling up the footage of the crew as Gwen had given them the lowdown. Later she would torture herself with what-ifs and possible scenarios of what could go wrong. Sadly there were far too many of them. Cap'n was bleeding for no reason, Cora was acting the child, Rora was jealous and the new guy was a hot head. Just what they needed. It wasn't normal for the feisty little blond to be so quiet, especially in the middle of something important like this. She had been more interested in watching her peers, checking for the telling reactions. Like Cora's, the way she'd been oddly hopeful for a moment. Fi had the feeling she'd been thinking about Daddy Dearest.

Fi gripped Jeans shoulder firmly, steering his wide eyed face away from Gwen and over to the stove where she quietly set about having him help her clean up and put stuff away. After that she'd see about having him help her make some cookies. Oatmeal Raisin sounded good to her. She'd have to talk with Tom. Maybe. That was what people did if they were in a relationship, and they were. Sort of. She just needed to talk to him. Probably explain how much she knew about him, and how much she stopped reading because she didn't want to dig deeper. She didn't want to crush the fragile feeling that he was a good guy with the tough as nails need to dig until every possible danger was exposed.

Soon as the cookies were in the oven she'd check on Gwen. The Cap'n would be fine. She had to be. Fi needed her core group, her family, and Jay was leaving her. That left Rora and the Cap'n and Tom and Drew. Not much of a treasure trove♦, but they had what counted and they were hers. Which meant Gwen would be fine.
