Kaylee hummed happily to herself as she worked away in the kitchen, portioning precious spices into the dinner rations. They'd run out of fresh stuff a while back and she had learned a long time ago that a little spice made the meals from a can a million times more bearable. Thin brows arched high into her forehead as the over heads flickered ever so slightly. Uh oh. She stopped mid high note to inspect them closer, and just as she had feared they were fine, which meant something else wasn't.

This sort of thing had been happening for days, little cues, an unusual creak here, a cold draft there shuddering electricity all around. Not that those things didn't happen on any given day while hurdling through space. In fact just about anyone who'd set foot on a ship wouldn't blink twice at a flickering light, it came with the territory; but this just felt different. Serenity was hurting somewhere and try her damnedest Kaylee just couldn't pinpoint it.

She had narrowed it down once again to the compression coil, one of the major components of a Trace Compression Block engine, and a part that didn't get looking to half as much as it deserved. While Kaylee knew as sure as the universe was big that funds were tight, she knew even better that if the coil blew they'd be dead in the water. A vaguely worried expression pulled at her eyes and the mechanic decided to postpone dinner to go take herself a look.

Turning on her heel she walked out into the corridor that branched off of the dining area, the one lacking the flower emblazoned hatch door of her room, and hurried back towards the engine room. She stood inside the doorway nimble hands perched on either side of her hips surveying the spinning heart of their happy home. Why won't you tell me what's wrong girl? She walked forward, tracing the fingers of one hand gently over the cool steel. Can't fix what I don't know's broke.

River had seen the usually perky mechanic running down the corridor and floated after her, head cocked to the side in concentration. She slipped inside the room and tucked herself into a nook where she could watch the other woman, the one that was more than perfect for her brother. She could complete him in ways he had yet to fathom. It was a fascinating relationship and one that she knew her parents would have frowned upon had they still had the controlling influence on his life that they had in the past.

River wrapped her arms around her knees and pressed her cheek against the back of one of her palms, large dark eyes intent. Kaylee could speak to Serenity in ways that River couldn't understand and it fascinated her. She wanted to know how it worked and what she heard. No one else could hear the screaming frenzied voices that faded when they were in the black, and no one could hear Serenity except Kaylee and no one looked at her like she was insane. Of course they'd been looking at her like that less and less lately, ever since Miranda.

They were less afraid and more wary of River now, but they tried not to show it, which she appreciated. She wasn't stupid though, she just didn't have control of her mind all the time. It was the little things in life that made the difference in everything. "Has she responded to your query?"

An unexpected voice cut through the gentle hum of the machine room causing the mechanic to start and quickly turn her head around. Eyes were slightly widened until they pinpointed the form of Serenity's most unique passenger in the corner, a somewhat shaky exhalation later and she was back to relaxed again. Just River, not something to be afraid of.A little cautious maybe, she tended to take things as straight fact and was sometimes a little... odd... but she wasn't scary. Just different in her own lovable way.

"Ain't quite work that way." Kaylee knelt down, fingers reaching underneath the stationary cylindrical housing and unlatching one of the hatch doors before pulling it back to reveal an insane mess of wires, plugs and flashing little lights. Her mouth pulling into a slightly worried line, an expression reserved solely for events of severe consequence and being unable to comprehend Serenity's messages. "She doesn't talk like you'n me do. Out loud and with words and the like."

Kaylee rolled onto her back, slipping beneath the open hatch to get a better angle at it. Fingers darted about, checking this connection and that, something finally caught her eye. It was deep in the corner and just looked off, in all honesty she had almost missed it. and it was wedged in there real good. She pointed vaguely towards the open tool box by her hammock. "Think you could hand me some things? I need a pair of pliers first... then maybe a socket wrench..." Words trailed away as the task at hand began to take over her attention.
