Rora could feel the fever coming on, but said nothing to Cora. Maybe it was a dumb move, but she weren't in a mood to be troubled over. 'Sides, if Cora was worth her salt, she knew, too. Plus, there was no stopping it, not really.

But right now, she was staring at the ceiling, her hands clasped together, trying desperately not to look at them and imagine a ring on her finger. It would be childish, pointless. Maybe, if he asked again, she'd say yes. A woman had told her once that when she'd said yes, she had a feeling in her stomach, one that wouldn't shutup, and she was practically screaming yes, it was so urgent. Rora hadn't gotten that feeling. Was something wrong with her? No, she was a women, she thought wryly, remembering how her friend's husband had had to ask three times before she said yes. But he hadn't given up, which had been the most romantic thing.

That's what hurt, Rora thought. Jay was giving up, or, at least, it felt like it. He'd come to her tonight, but he hadn't explained himself, hadn't done any of the things he should've done if he really was ready to take her as a wife.

God, she wanted to know why she was so stubborn. It was the Companion in her - a part that couldn't go away. She wished it would, in so many ways.

Rora sighed, looking around, mostly for something to do.

It had been several hours since Jay and Fi had stopped drinking. She had retired below decks with Tom, and Jay decided to take a walk, his buzz thoroughly worn off by this point. He really had nowhere to go, he didn't want to go to his bunk, and he walked until he found himself outside the hatch to the Medbay. The bay was practically deserted. Coralyn had mentioned earlier that she was returning briefly to gather supplies for the wounded outside, and it appeared that she was finishing up with that now. The only other occupant was Rora, who was lying with her face to the ceiling, awake.

He almost didn't walk in, but he gripped the handle and pulled the hatch open silently on its well oiled runner. Coralyn turned to acknowledge him, nodding and offering a smile. Rora, if she saw him, remained silent.

Jay walked over to where she lay and stood over her, a look of sadness and concern on his face, guilt clouding his eyes. A part of him blamed himself for what had happened to her. If he had been more vigilant, hadn't been out with Coralyn, maybe he could have intervened before things had gone this far. Now she lay badly wounded on the table in front of him, fighting for her life. I was bad enough that almost off of their missions or outings usually ended up with someone under Drew's knife.....just why did it have to be Rora.....why now.

It would just make leaving that much harder. he sat down next to her bed and gripped her hand, squeezing it lightly, before letting it go again. She was pointedly looking away from him, but he didnt care. She could still hear him, even if her pride, or whatever it was, kept her from looking at him.
"I'm so sorry Rora......"

What else was there to say. Did she expect him to explain himself about Cora? She was jealous and now *her* pride was hurt. This upset Jay, but a part of him was screaming GOOD! Serves you right!!!...Hurts doesnt it."

He had been lonely and crestfallen following the rejection and that, coupled with the fact that Rora had been doing her best to avoid being alone with him, had caused him to seek out the company of the young doctor. He wasn't about to apologize for that, and he was even willing to go as far as to admit that he had enjoyed himself. Besides being a bit neurotic, Cora was a sweet woman ... kind, and beautiful.

He spoke again, sensing that she wasn't going to answer his previous statement, his voice soft and filled with sadness. "I'm going away Rora. You had said that you needed your space, well, cant rightly do that what with the both of us livin' in such close quarters with nowhere to be really alone."

He rubbed the back of his head. "I think its for the best Rora, got some things long neglected that need takin' care of. Reckon I'll cash in on some of my leave time, disappear for a spell."

He stood up, preparing to leave. No sense in staying here if she wasn't going to answer him. He looked down on her tiny form, covered in the surgical blanket. "I love you Rora......"

"Gods know it isn't any fault of yours. Nor ours - we did what we had to and I'm proud of that." She dropped her eyes. "It'll be difficult getting those damn Alliance feds to believe it." Her words were spoken as if she hadn't been the mechanic for the Cressida for a good four years. The incident had proved to be a throwback for her, in many ways.

"I'm going away Rora. You had said that you needed your space, well, cant rightly do that what with the both of us livin' in such close quarters with nowhere to be really alone."

Rora looked up at him, her brows drawing together. "You're leaving." There was no question, just repition of fact - fact it was obvious she was unhappy with. "Have I become that revolting to you that you feel you need to run away?" It was a rash statement, uncalled for, said for the pure need of a reaction.

"I love you Rora......"

Tears pooled in her eyes threatening to spill over, but she tipped up her chin a little in an effort to stop their flow. She was sure none fell. "You do. But you don't understand me." Rora looked away again, nodding to herself. "I suppose I deserve that fate."

Jay stopped short as he heard Rora reply. He turned around and came back to her side. He didnt see if Cora had left the room or not, but he didnt care. All the weeks and months of pent up emotion and things that he had wanted to say were coming out....there was little to loose at this point. Time to lay the cards out.

"You dont deserve that fate Rora. For gods sake! And believe it or not I DO understand you. I know all about the vows you took as a companion....but I also know that you are no longer in the guild. You are a free woman Rora! Maybe I acted rashly and with wounded pride when you turned me down....but don't tell me that I don't understand! And finding out about your past only a few months ago wasn't exactly your most shining moment. How could you keep that from me. I fell in love with a girl that had no intention of falling in love with me...companions are not supposed to fall in love....remember."

The words were flowing now...he could feel wetness on his cheek as he gestured wildly, talking with his hands.

"You let me fall for you and didnt say a WORD! When were you going to tell me Rora! Not that I care.....I hold that profession in the highest esteem.....but I think that I had the right......"

He slumped back into the chair, head in his hands.

"You're not exactly a troll to look at, Jay. I couldn't help what I was feeling, and you weren't backing down. If I was going to fall in love with you, I was going to fall in love with you - I wasn't going to talk myself out of it. And, in case you didn't get it - I do love you." She sighed warily. It was difficult not to yell when he seemed to be attacking her at every possible angle.

"No one had the right to know my history, no one except for me. Fi knew because she's, well, Fi. I wanted to keep it secret so I could be free to fall in love without having that stigma attached." There was more to it then that, more that she would surely find out soon, but for now, this was her concern. "And, no, Jay. You don't understand me. But that's alright, I don't expect you to, and it certainly keeps the mystery alive." It was said with false humor, a weak attempt at lightening the mood that she knew wouldn't work, but there was truth in the statement, regardless.

Fevers were terrible, fevers could kill, could spread, could cause no end of agony and make wounds that were already causing one enough pain worse. Carefully monitored fevers on the other hand were often nothing to worry about, and it was this complicated mantra that Coralyn kept repeating in her head as she tidied up around the MediBay. They’d just have to deal with it when it hit, the shivers, the rapid change of body temperature... those telltale signs were increasing, and aside from keeping her young patient hydrated and her stream of antibiotics constant, there was little they could do but watch those numbers on the monitor rise with the degrees. Watching and waiting had never really been Cora’s forte, it was almost a relief when Jay made his sudden entrance and though she still couldn’t quite bring herself to catch his eye, she waved anyway, offering a cursory but genuine smile.

He was here to talk to Aurora of course, this was probably the first opportunity they’d had to talk since that little abortive discussion regarding their future... And though Cora hardly approved of intense conversation when one of the participants was just out of critical care, it was none of her business. Turning on her heel, the nervous ‘tap tap’ of her shoes start to exit the room before...

"I'm going away Rora..."

Excuse me, he was what? Her shoes seemed to carry her right back into the MediBay, while her head slowly filled up with panic. Jay couldn’t leave, he was the First Mate! Not only that, he was her friend, the only one on board who seemed to care for her, the one that made everything seem so much more light-hearted and easy. It was because of her, naturally, she’d gone and selfishly spoilt his relationship and now he couldn’t cope. What if Rora went into septic shock and died while he was gone!? Rora... seeing her lying there, ill and trying her best to keep up a defense, it was genuinely heartbreaking. And unhealthy.

“Mr. Andhek, I really must protest.” Coralyn said coldly, in a voice that didn’t really seem to belong to her, as she approached the bed again. “She’s on the brink of a fever, Sir, and this level of upset can only exacerbate her condition!”

Rora jumped slightly, looking at Cora, a small smile on her face. She liked Cora, she'd admit; for a newbie on the ship, she was fighting the upset quite well.

"It's fine, Cora," Rora told her. "If he wants to leave...that's his decision." I just may not be here when he returns.

"It's cold in here, Cora," Rora said, giving a little shiver. She was trying not to say that she was beginning to feel it, and, hopefully, Cora could get Jay out before the fever really got to her. Rora had enough fighting ahead, and, truth be told, she was tired of fighting with him.

And that didn’t take long. Nodding at what Drew was telling him, the boy replied with a simple ‘okay’ before leaving the meeting room. He hadn’t even gotten to stay in the room long enough to find out anything.

Jean touched the Medbay door, reconsidering what he was doing for a moment before he finally pulled it open slowly. Aurora was in there, like he said she’d be, and so was Coralyn, and Jay. “Can I come in?” he asked, stepping through the doorway, his fingers remained on the handle. They looked upset, why did everyone always seem to look that way?

He knew now that Aurora was one of the ones who had gotten injured, somehow, earlier. What bothered the boy was the fact that both Aurora and Jay looked like they were either crying or ready to cry. He hoped she wasn’t dying or anything… “They didn’t want me at their meeting. Said I should come down here. But… I can leave if you guys want me too,” Jean didn’t wanna interrupt anything.

Taking a small step forward, he tried to see if he could figure out what was wrong with the mechanic just by glancing over at her. “A-are you okay - umm -, Miss Aurora?" the boy's concerned eyes focused in her direction. "It's just... there was a lot of worrying goin’ on earlier... and...” his voice trailed off and his eyes shifted nervously. He didn’t know what to say; he was just worried, scared, and confused about everything.

Rora turned slightly, resisting the urge to wince as she did so. "Hey, Jean," she said with a smile. "C'mon in, hon. I'm going to be okay - but I'd love it if you'd come play cards with me - it'll keep my mind off the healing. Healing hurts, y'know." She tossed him a wink.

LoL, sorry, just trying to keep things moving. ;)

Jay raised his head up and stared in disbelief at Rora's statement. She claimed that she didn't want a stigma attached top her...to leave the life of a companion behind her, yet she used the fact that she was a companion as her primary excuse.

"And, no, Jay. You don't understand me. But that's alright, I don't expect you to, and it certainly keeps the mystery alive."

Jay snorted incredulously. Coralyn thankfully interrupted any more that he was going to say. He looked at Rora one last time before he got up to walk out.
"Mystery.....right. You know what Rora...... He paused to consider, thinking better of what he was about to say, choosing instead an action that he knew would give some closure, no matter how it hurt both of them.

"I see now that I have been wasting my time, and yours, Miss Elizabeth. I sincerely wish for your timely recovery. I hope that someday you find someone that you can live with, that you finally "escape" your "stigma." I hope he treats you proper, like you deserve.......like I could have."

Jay's eyes were heavy and his voice was shallow, barely winning at keeping his still pent up emotions in check. But grown men never cried, it was a rule...and he really didn't want too.

"Goodbye Rora."

With all that they needed to accomplish before they left, and with the Alliance soldiers coming on the boat in the morning, there was a good possibility that he would not see her again, lending a certain finality to the goodbye. Maybe it would take him walking away to make her realize her mistake...if it was a mistake.

He bowed slightly at the waist than turned his back.

Jay looked at Cora as he walked through the hatch, a sad smile on his face. "Please forgive me Cora. I would like to speak to you later."

With that, he disappeared into the darkened interior of the ship.

Coralyn watched the exchange, feeling increasingly agitated and uncomfortable. It was high time he left the room, for all of their sakes. She just didn’t want him to leave the ship.“Well your timing isn’t exactly impeccable.” She retorted to Jay’s retreating form. Truth be told she was more hurt than annoyed, but she couldn’t just let the man leave without talking to her first. “And um-yes. Do find me later.” She added, a little bit lamely. It was hardly a parting shot, but finally her focus was back on her patient.

“I know you’re cold Rora, and it’s going to get just a little colder, but we’ll keep you as comfortable as we can without overheating your body.” She said soothingly, turning to the boy with a smile. “Hello, Jean. Would you be so kind as to fetch me that compress over there on the table? Then we can sit down and keep Aurora company.”
