**** What follows is a joint post between Jay and Rora taking place en route to Verbena. Jay talking is in bold, Rora's part is highlighted in yellow. If Rora decides to continue this after she leaves the observation deck Fi is welcome to comment, otherwise, this topic is a BACK POST and is closed. Thanks - the MODS **** Despite his earlier reservations, Jay searched for Rora, a part of him hoping that he wouldn’t find her. His stomach was full of butterflies and the normally reserved Jay was somewhat nervous. He finally discovered her on the observation deck, laying on the large couch, watching the blackness of space pass outside the thick viewport Jay was startled, he had been expecting to discover her in the engine room, which would have made what he was going to try to do a more private affair, but there wouldn’t be anyone about at this hour. “Evenin' Rora" Jay said. "Mind if I join you?" It had been a long time since Rora had spent time staring off into the 'verse. She missed quiet private time...but at the same time she loved being so much part of a family. She looked up, surprised. "Oh, Jay!" Rora couldn't help but smile. "Sure, of course." "Shiny..." Jay hoped that his voice didnt betray him. He lowered himself down next to her and looked up at the blackness above them, the darkness broken by the faint light from the Cressi's twin drives and the flashing nav lights. "Whatcha lookin' at?" He immediately mentally slapped himself....what a dumbass comment..."whatcha' lookin' at!?!"...really He sighed and hoped Rora didnt notice. Rora tilted her head at him. "Do I need to run right now? If you're gonna be acting all crazy-like." He looked over at her..…"NO!...I mean, please dont.....just nervous s'all" "About laying in the observation deck and watching the 'verse fly by?" She shook her head a little before laying against him. "Yeah..that....." "Why do I get the feeling you're not saying something?" Jay swallowed hard and attempted to smile at her........he barely managed a grin "Me...not saying something....where would you get that idea?" "Oh, I don't know, you're voice is about half an octave higher than usual, and you're being really rather evasive." Rora frowned at him, kissing his chin lightly. "Please tell me." "Im not sure that I want too Rora......I mean we have know each other for over two years now, we have a good thing.....don’t want to......ruin..it" he finished, somewhat quietly. "Oh, Jay. Stop that." "Rora........" he started..than forged ahead. After all, as they had said in the war...nothing ventured, nothing gained. "Yes?" She drew out the word, eyeing him carefully. "Rora....I love you, have since the moment I met you. Gwen and Drew gettin' hitched made me realize that Im gettin' older and got no-one to share my life with...not that its much of a life out here....cant offer you anything fancy, none like what you had back as a companion.....but I will treat you right......Rora, will you please do me the honor of being my wife." He waited for her to say something........wincing inwardly. Rora took a steadying breath as the weight of his words sank in. She sat up, turning to look at him. "Jay...I can't...really...answer that..." she said slowly, "...yet," she added after a moment of watching the look on his face dwindle. Jay's face fell briefly before he recovered. He took a moment to think of what to say Its not that he expected anything...but this was a blow. "Please, don't take it too sour, Jay. I love you, I just can't...say yes." She took a breath. "I know you have no clue as to how hard it was for me to say that. Marrying you would be...I can't quite...understand how that would feel. It's against everything I was raised for. Jay didnt understand......but he couldnt tell her that. He was sure that face betrayed him, despite his best efforts to hide it. "I understand Rora......" "No, you don't," she said with a sigh. "Yes.....yes I do." Jay managed a weak smile. He looked over at her, and than looked up at the black. He sat up, this was, he figured, his cue to leave. "Im sorry for disturbing your quiet Rora.......got some paperwork...long day tomorrow....Ill take my leave." "Oh, Jay." Rora moved to her knees, pulling her to him and kissing him deeply. "Please keep trying. Please." Jay kissed her back, but there wasnt his usual passion behind it. He was dejected......at a loss, and he really needed to get away from there. He broke the kiss. "Im sorry Rora.....the paperwork.....Cap'n's got me buried in work........" His sad eyes betrayed the real feeling behind his smile "Enjoy the rest of your evenin' Rora...." He stood to leave. "You can leave, Jay - but please don't cover it up with a lie." She pushed herself up, her brows furrowed in hurt. "G'night, Jay." She moved toward the hatch, and ducked in, making her way quickly to the comforting hum of the engine room. Jay watched her go. "Great....." He said to himself. "Just great...." He sank to the deck with his head in his hands, sitting here for a full ten minutes before getting up and making his way to his berth. No-one would know of this...least not from him.......He was not in the habit of asking twice. But right now, he didn’t know what to think. It wasn’t like he had ever done this before, and to watch the woman that he thought loved him do that to him…… He shut his hatch behind him, taking the ring that he hadn’t even had a chance to show her out of his jacket pocket. He placed it back in the safe. Maybe someday it would grace the hand of a girl who deserved it…weather that girl would be Rora…well that was up in the air right now. Sure, she was a former companion…..but the focus there was former. She wasn’t a companion anymore, she hadn’t been for some time. She was allowed to fall in love. There has to be something else…. Jay decided. He would give Rora her space. He was nobody’s fool….as much as it would hurt at first, if she wanted her space…she had her space. He dropped into his bunk and went to sleep. |
