Mal made his way through the crowded docks to get back to Serenity. He'd done what he'd set out to do that morning: he'd sold the ship part that needed selling. He'd gotten a good price for it, too. Only catch was he'd ended up taking on a passenger in the process, but it didn't seem like that was going to be too much of a problem, or at least not as big a trouble as he'd originally expected when the girl said she wanted on Serenity and off-planet.

He squinted his eyes in the sun, scanning the crowds for Schuyler. Once he spotted her, he made his way over. It struck him that none of the crew knew they were taking on passengers, but that wouldn't be a problem. Maybe one of them could be a little less-than-welcoming, but Jayne would just have to rutting well put up with it. "I sold it," Mal told the girl when he'd gotten to her. "Sold it easy, too. So you still wanna hitch that ride off-world, it's yours." He was all for holding up his side of the deal.

River tilted her head to the side and drifted down the stairs into the cargo hold, her hands skimming just over the top of railing. She twisted around and danced through the large, mostly empty, place. She was happy to have someone coming that was closer to her age. Kaylee wasn't too much older, but Kaylee was having relations with her brother. Somehow that mattered, though River wasn't sure how.

The brunette twirled around, smiling as her dress billowed just a bit around her. It was something pretty that Zoe had helped her find not long ago. She liked shopping with Zoe; the woman wasn't as gung ho about it as the other two women. River giggled and continued to flit about, waiting for her Captain to come with her new friend. Hopeful friend? But what if the girl didn't like River? What if she thought River was just another Crazy Person like Jayne did?

River stopped dancing and stared at the side of the ship, her eyes wide and worried. She wasn't used to people her own age. She'd always been precocious and too intelligent for her own good. No one her age liked her, the crew was her family and she loved them and needed them. The girl made a sound of distress but continued to simply stare at nothing, her mind racing through endless possibilities.

Skye'd found the ship easy enough. She'd passed it numerous times, it being one of the ships she'd had her eye on. The Serenity, rumor had it, had a tight crew, were Independent-run, and were no nonsense.

"I sold it," Mal told the girl when he'd gotten to her. "Sold it easy, too. So you still wanna hitch that ride off-world, it's yours."

"Absolutely," Skye said with a smile, bouncing on her toes slightly. She hefted her bag on her shoulder, turning to the open hatch, waiting for Mal to go first. She was a guest, and would not step on the man's toes.

The pilot wandered around, searching for signs of life on Serenity. It was quiet, and he saw no one, so he stopped by the little dining area and grabbed a small something to snack on.

Strolling along across the top area of the cargo hold, Wash caught a glimpse of River down below as she twirled around, her outfit fluttering just barely around her. He wondered what she was doing down there, seeing as how he didn't see anybody else with her.

It only took him a few moments to notice that there were people talking right outside. Was it one of the crew? Wash made his way down the stairs, stopping a couple seconds after he reached the bottom. He had had a small smile on his face because of the young girl's obvious happiness, shown through her desire to dance; but she had suddenly stopped and began staring at a wall, turning his smile into more of a frown.

The pilot's attention was drawn away from the doctor's sister when he started to hear more noises being made around the hatch, it was already open, and it looked like someone was coming in. As it turned out, both the captain, and … someone else stepped in soon afterward. And, well, she definitely wasn't one of the crew. "Cap'n?" Wash began, raising an eyebrow slightly. "Who's this?"

Schuyler stepped inside with Mal, and was greeted by a girl - maybe a year or so older than herself - who was twirling. The sight made her smile, right up until she stopped.

"Cap'n?" Wash began, raising an eyebrow slightly. "Who's this?"

The red-headed man looked too scrawny to be a gunman, too clean to be a mechanic, and yet, too dirty to be a doc. Which meant he was either...what was it, communications? or the pilot. Skye couldn't be sure.

She stuck out her hand just the same. "Schuyler Carson. Pleased to meet ya."

The lithe brunette twirled when she heard Wash start speaking to the other girl, "I'm so glad to have another girl my age aboard Serenity," River said, excited again. She bounced in place a moment before racing to the Captain, taking his hand and smiling up at him before biting her lip a little and smiling at Schuyler as well. She continued to bounce a little bit, tugging at Mal's arm the tiniest bit, continuing to give him bright happy smiles.

Skye couldn't help but smile, putting her hands on slim hips. "I'll be - glad I'm not the only girl aboard." There seemed to be something wrong with the other girl, though it wasn't some Schuyler could really put a name to.

River liked the other girls smile, it was honest and open. None of the hidden fears and mean thoughts that were usually so apparent in people her own age. She could only imagine that it would be worse now that she had so many problems controlling her emotions and the words that tumbled from her mouth without cease on occasion. "Far from it in actuality. We have Zoe and Inara and Kaylee. The rest are boys like Mal. Wash and Simon and Jayne. Jayne has a girls name and is very upset when you point it out," She gave another bright smile and decided it would be considered rude and possibly make the other girl uncomfortable if she mentioned that it was very fun to upset the large man. Especially about his name.

"I'm going to have to remember that," Skye said with a miscivious grin, definately picking up the unspoken idea from the other girl. "I think I'm gonna like it here."

OOC: It ate my first, longer post. Woooo.

Truth be told, Inara had learned to let newcomers on Serenity get settled in before introducing herself. "The Ambassador" didn't always receive the warmest of welcomes... though usually they weren't any worse than awkward. But it had been a while since they had had any new faces, and they had been "at sea" for so long. Inara was more than a little eager for all the female company she could get.

At least on this outing she managed to get a little work of her own done, made apparent by the new gold bangle she was wearing on her left wrist. It wasn't uncommon, especially further away from the core planets, for her to receive a departing gift or two. And it was a pleasant walk back, for once she didn't have to take her shuttle.

The companion approached the others; now that she was closer she could introduce herself. They were between her and the ship, so it would be rude not to, she reasoned, amused. "Nǐ hǎo," the dark haired woman bowed slightly. "I see we have a new passenger. It's a pleasure to meet you," she smiled. "I'm also a passenger on Serenity. My name is Inara." Inara winked a "hello" at River. It didn't take a psychic to know she was also excited about the new addition.

She ignored Mal. She always did when returning from seeing a client.

"Gods...are you a Companion?" Skye blurted out, rather rudely. She could herself, clapping a hand over her mouth a little melodramatically. "Don't mean to be rude, sorry, but I grew up in the Sakura House in Pelorum. My mother was a Companion." She shrugged. "I quit training, because, well, the cat can't seem to catch my tongue when it ought to." Schuyler gave River a comical look, sticking out her tongue, and putting one finger to her cheek before letting out a light giggle.

"Nǐ hǎo, Lady Inara." Skye bowed in the traditional way, giving the Companion a broad grin.
