Clicking her tongue against the roof of her mouth in warning to Fi, Gwen quietly sliced another bit out of her apple before casting a green eyed gaze toward her communications officer. It was very much a warning look. Whatever Fi had against the new girl she was going to squash fast if she had too- while jabs and ribbing was expected in a group like this, outright bullying was not something she would put up with. This game the blond was playing was coming close to a very, very delicate line. "You'll meet everyone in time, Doctor Cardew. In fact I hope they seek you out to make your acquaintance before you go seeking them." Her gaze shifted to Tom, then to Sidda, and even to Jean who was just entering the room. Sure the last two were just passengers, but if they were going to reside on Cressi then they were being thrown in to the pot as well. At the youths nervousness, though, Gwen motioned him in. "Come on in, kid. There's plenty to go 'round and room as well." |

Fi glanced up at the wicked gleam in Tom's eye and her smirk grew to a full bloom smile, she could feel the dimples in her cheeks, a site that wasn't often seen. She waggled her eyebrows, uncaring if anyone clued in on their exchange. It would be good for all the new people to see that Tom was hers and she didn't share well. A tiny voice piped up from the door and Fi turned her dark blue eyes to the midget form of their pseudo-stowaway. "Yeah, start getting meat on your bones. Your still small enough to accidentally shove out the airlock." She took a bite of her own food and didn't look back at the kid. She'd done her good deed of the evening. She felt a smirk grow on her lips again as she glanced over at Tom again. "Whatever you need," She agreed before taking another bite. Edited by Seraphina Grant, Oct 2 2009, 06:56 PM.

The Companion stopped in her actions of taking a seat, glancing toward the youth who stood quietly by the door. It was a warm smile that crossed her face as she motioned for Jean to come closer. She loved kids, having had younger siblings herself it was hard not too. "I think there is some room beside of me if you wish to join us. As the Captain has said, there looks to be more than enough for everyone." Glancing back to the older MacKenzie the woman settled closer to the inside of the seat allowing for room beside of her. "That will depend upon how many hours that you set aside, Captain. I shall speak with you later on this." Yes even the eye roll she got in return was almost met with one of her own. Her sister really never had changed. A little harder, more guarded, but still the same. When Coralyn spoke, though, her attention went to her. "You are from Roma? How intriguing. I have been there a number of times when I resided in the Core. Londinum is a nice planet to visit. Certainly your skills as a doctor will be highly appreciated amongst the crew and the worlds that the ship visits." Cora seemed a quiet girl, shy. Sidda just smiled at her knowing either she would come to her own or.. the crew was an interesting sort that would help her. |

The Captain’s kind words were somewhat heartening and Coralyn forced some optimism into her voice “It’s quite alright Captain, I’m sure everyone’s extremely busy with their individual tasks... there’ll be plenty of time for me to get to know everyone.” As she spoke, another, quite extraordinary beauty sat herself down, along with a child who looked almost as nervous as she felt. When the woman in question unexpectedly commented on Roma, a small but very genuine smile snaked across Coralyn’s face for the first time that evening. “It IS beautiful, isn’t it?” Cora confirmed, with the barest trace of wistfulness. Realistically she’d never be allowed to go back and if she had to it would be as a criminal. Focussing on the fonder memories tended to help a lot. This woman could be no-one but a passenger. Her clothing, her grace and mannerisms... Coralyn was no stranger to seeing Companians growing up in the heart of a city and that was her best bet, especially considering her exchange with the Captain. “Well that’s awfully kind of you to say, Miss...?” |

"Siddalee Kellehar. I rent one of the shuttles here on Cressida." With a smile she carefully started to fix her plate of mostly what was considered healthy on the table. It wasn't typical ship cooking for a change which was a nice break from the usual mix of protein that could be found. It would be curious to see how long it would last. "Have you been away from the Core much before? It will be quite an eye opening experience if you haven't." |

"Eye opening is putting it lightly," Fi commented between bites, sending the Companion an arch look. She didn't mind Sidda so much, but then they didn't really interact all that much. "The youngest daughter of a prominent family isn't likely to be used to the way we do things around her. We'll all have to be understanding," Her tone had a mocking edge to it, letting everyone know that she wouldn't be all that understanding. She and Cora had their own issues that needed to be worked out, though Fi's version of working things out was likely not the same as Cardew's. Fi was more of a ... hands on kind of person. |

"Seraphina." Gwen's tone was hard, her gaze harder, as she leaned past Rora to watch the other younger girl at the table. This was going to far. What bit of a smile had been there before was gone replaced with the look of a woman in charge and used to dealing with things like this. It didn't mean that Gwen liked it though. Oh she had no problems dismissing anyone from the table she thought wasn't playing nice. This was a thinner line the woman was walking now. "Past don't mean much of anything right now. Y'all are members of my crew. Nothing more, nothing less. If and when someone decides to talk 'bout their lives before they came here is up to them. Is this understood?" Gwen looked at each and every person who was in the room so far. Even if she and Fi both knew everything about everyone, it was not her place to vent it out in the open. Fi smiled brightly at her Captain, "Just trying to be helpful," She turned toward the little doctor again, "You understand I'm sure," Her eyes were just as hard as the captains, but she wouldn't push it anymore tonight. She knew better than to cross Gwen when the woman was using the name 'Seraphina'. |

Coralyn nodded at the introduction, making a careful mental note of the name. To forget once was embarrassing. Twice would be sheer carelessness. “Actually, after I left Roma I was stationed in Beylix for six months. An inoculation program against the diseases one can only find in such a place. Only nursing mind you, but still as far as eye opening goes...” she gave a little sad shrug. It’d been a depressing, but suitably distracting time for her. She’d almost felt sad when she left for Persephone, but staying would have made her only sadder still. “And yes thank you, Miss Grant. I would actually appreciate your understanding.” She added, her voice mild and without malice. She didn’t want to rock the boat, so to speak, but she’d seemed to have antagonised this woman simply by existing. Was the induction process on Cressida really supposed to be this cold and personal? After all, she was only here for their own wellbeing. She was terribly grateful for her Captain’s sudden (and again, rather unexpected) interjection, but at the same time would it ostracize her more? Silently she cursed herself for thinking like a schoolgirl. This was ridiculous. Captain was right, she was perfectly entitled to her silence. |

The captain had motioned for Jean to come in, her words making him feel a bit better. His worries began to fade now that he could see that they didn't really mind him being in there. He was always worried when it came to that sort of thing, he couldn't help it. As he started to head more or less in the captain's direction, another person's attention turned to him for just a moment, it was the lady who had the knife before. "Yeah, start getting meat on your bones. Your still small enough to accidentally shove out the airlock." The boy stopped for a moment, he definitely didn't understand her humor, if that was what it was supposed to be. He had an unsure kind of expression on his face as he tried to figure out how to respond. Nothing was coming to mind, though, and it wasn't like she was even looking at him anymore anyways. He did, however, agree with her on the topic of food. Ever since he had first set foot in the galley, his stomach had been growling, the aroma making his mouth water. "I think there is some room beside of me if you wish to join us. As the Captain has said, there looks to be more than enough for everyone." Having been lost in his thoughts just a second before, the child was slightly caught off guard when another voice spoke to him. He looked over towards her, it was someone he had not yet seen. "Oh. Thank you," he smiled gratefully at Sidda, carefully sitting himself down next to her. The boy appreciated her kindness very much. With no clue as to what the current conversation was about, and his stomach still begging to be fed, he reached onto the table and gently picked up a small carrot, nibbling on it as he listened to the others. Drew motioned to Coralyn. "Dr. Cardew will be examining each and every one of you within the next few weeks. If you don't like this, too bad." He stood up and left, taking his food with him. The usual chatter of the crew was for some reason bugging him tonight. Maybe it was because he wanted Gwen to himself. That was selfish, he knew, but they could only briefly discuss what had happened before being interrupted by obligation. He made his was to his bunk with a sigh, debating on packing his stuff to move into Gwen's...and so he started, if only to calm his broiling temper. |

Raynor's respect for the captain rose considerably when she stepped in to end Fi's sniping at the new doctor. Rayne had laughed at first, admittedly, and he probably shouldn't have, but Fi had just kept digging. It was a good to know that the captain was willing to step in and keep things civil between them. Not that he'd expected she wouldn't; it was just that he was still new and didn't really know what to expect, from anyone on board. He'd stayed fairly quiet throughout the evening so far, which was odd for him. Of course, one factor was that he was too busy eating, but the other was that he was just sort of observing. Taking it all in. How the crew - which, with the addition of Siddalee and Jean, seemed to be almost entirely here - got on with each other. He vaguely wondered if Fi would ever take aim at him like she seemed to be as she was gunning for the doctor. It was possible, he figured. Or, he corrected himself on noticing her little poke at Jean, more like probable. He also figured he wouldn't be taking it quite the same way as Dr. Cardew was. She was being so... quietly polite about it. And Raynor respected her for it, despite the fact that in her place, he'd have words to say. She seemed a little frazzled, but she was also showing a great amount of patience in how she reacted. He turned to Dr. Cardew, who was in the seat next to him, and spoke just to her, throwing out a few words that weren't so... doctor-bashing. Or Cardew-bashing, rather, since no one was actually making fun of doctors in general; just her. "Personally, I'm glad to have a second doctor on board. Makes it feel a little more healthful. More safe." Rayne stopped for a moment, and then added with a tilt of his head, "And I actually mean that." |

Fi's eyes narrowed at the new kids comment. She liked Rayne alright, but she didn't like his wording. Sure, Fi hadn't meant her words in the exact way phrased, but she'd meant the meaning in her tone for damn sure. Rayne didn't know her and Cardew's business, neither did that Cap'n for that matter, but the Cap'n was the Cap'n and Rayne was just some new kid that had joined the crew. There were precious few that Fi considered to be true friends, and fewer were off the boat than on it. Mikhail had been a good one and she'd never wished him one moment of ill, ever. Little Miss Cardew, with her naive beliefs and false hopes had gotten him questioned tortured and eventually put out of his misery. Fi would not be forgiving her any time soon. "I've got better things to do," Fi stood up, most of her food still on her plate, and left the galley. She'd be hungry later, but she had stuff stashed in her room. She sent one last parting look to Tom, her face completely devoid of all emotion. |

Fi's comments were entertaining him, but Gwen put a stop to it. Now, it was going to get boring he was sure of it. He glanced down at the plate in front of him and saw that he had ate a good amount of it. Eating a little more, he scowled at the thought of having to get a physical. He was barely listening anymore and watched as Fi got up and caught the look from Fi to him. He ate a little more and then pushed the almost empty plate away from him. "As much as it pains me to leave this conversation, I have to get back to flying the ship," he said dryly as he stood up from the table and headed towards the bridge. |

Coralyn suddenly wanted to give a squeak of joy, having apparently graduated from ‘Miss’ to ‘Doctor’ in her new Boss’ eyes before he left. Irritated he might've been, but he'd still said it! And then again at her thoroughly confusing new nemesis leaving the room too. To cap it off she’d managed to garner an entirely unprovoked compliment from the young man sitting next to her. Things were looking up, even if there were ten physicals left to go, with people of varying attitudes... “Well, thank you. I suppose that’s what Captain MacKenzie had in mind when she hired me.” She replied. “And I’ll certainly do my best not to let the crew down.” Neurotic and nervous she might be, but her healing skills were something she could always depend on. It seemed that she certainly had to prove her worth, with at least a few people. |

Gwen stood, slowly, setting the half an apple down with a sigh. She'd come back for it later when time permitted her to do so. Right now she had Drew to see to as well as having a talk with Fi. Either could come first but in all honestly she wanted to speak with the man first to have her nerves calm enough to deal with Fi's little... outburst. "If y'all will excuse me, I got some stuff t' see before we get close to Verbena. I gather we got at least ten more hours before we get there so I suggest getting some rest while you can." Nodding her head once in departure she started toward the crew quarters in the neck of the ship and where Drew had vanished off to. |

Deciding that perhaps it’d be best to leave whilst she was feeling more optimistic about the whole situation, Coralyn thought, now the Captain was gone, her going to her bunk wouldn’t be interpreted as an insult. “I hope you’ll excuse me.” She said softly, getting out of her seat. “But I’d better take the chsnce to unpack. There’s such a lot to do before we land.” True, her suitcase was tiny. But Cora was a woman who felt compelled to fold and arrange most things twenty times before she was satisfied. “It was nice to meet you all. I do hope we’ll be able to chat more, aside of course from your physicals.” She lingered for a moment, feeling a bit guilty about retiring early on her first evening, not to mention not eating any of the delicious-looking stir fry. But honestly, even chewing and swallowing would have been like a challenge, something she’d have been extra-cautious about. And there were far more things to think about than food. Miss Grant for one... |

Jay stood as well to clear his place as Coralyn was trying to justify her exit from the galley. He felt bad for her. Fi had come down hard, and while he had his suspicions as to why, it was still unwarranted. Jay caught up to the new doctor in the kitchen area, and spoke softly to her as he started to clean his plate and return his mug to its cupboard. "Hold up there a minute Coralyn. Fi can be a bit hard 'round the edges....dont take it too personally. Not rightly sure bout why she is comin' down so hard on yah." Jay shrugged, not sure if his words were worth much, but hoped that the lady doctor wouldn't think he was being mean to her. Wern't his job to be mean. |

Drew motioned to Coralyn. "Dr. Cardew will be examining each and every one of you within the next few weeks. If you don't like this, too bad." Everyone seemed to be disappearing from the room all at once. Jean watched as each individual person went off on their own way, quietly eating some stir-fry as he did so. Some of the crew had seemed to be less than happy, he wondered why. "Examining us?" he looked up towards the woman that he assumed was Doctor Cardew. Now she was starting to leave like the others, but he wanted to know what they meant. "Physicals?" The doctor had also mentioned having a lot to do before they landed, so he spoke again. He was shy though, since he didn't really know the girl. "Do you… need help?" the boy asked Coralyn. He kind of wanted to make himself useful on the ship, though he didn't really know how, and figured he ought to ask her, regardless of what her answer might be. |

Coralyn wasn’t such a good judge of character, she knew that now more than ever. The human anatomy was far more familiar and predictable to her. But her First Mate was kind, of that she was quite certain. And just the offhand gesture he delivered when catching up to her was hugely appreciated. “Thank you, Jay.” She gave a little shrug in return and tried for a smile. She herself had an inkling about the source of Fi’s hostility, but she didn’t even dare think about it for herself, let alone voice it out loud. “You’ve been quite lovely. And who knows, maybe Miss Grant and I can still be friends. First impressions aren’t always so awfully important.” That was taking optimism to the next level. "Physicals?" She paused again and turned to the source of the smaller voice that had addressed her. Coralyn, having specialised in paediatrics had a great affinity for children and found the question unexpectedly endearing. "Nothing at all to worry about." She reassured, her tone lighter. "Just a little check-up to make sure everyone's healthy and human. And I'm sure I'll find you something to do. Help's always appreciated. I expect you'll know the place better than I do in no time." |
