It was a warm breeze that shifted in to the Cressida's cargo hold mixing with the smells of civilization that worked its way about the ship. Sounds of the markets not far of mixed with the sounds of laughter and conversations going on within the full ship. A full ship. Gwen wasn't sure the last time there was this many crew ever assigned to Cressi as long as she had been with the Company. It was a good, welcoming feeling. The intimacy of so many folk in one small space forging relationships with each other on various scales combined with having to work together for the better of the boat. Jay had checked earlier with a headcount of thirteen people residing within the freshly painted hull. Two of them were passengers, but they might as well have been crew. Even that Companion had stuck around longer than Gwen had expected, but there was a good working relationship there. Sidda payed for the shuttle rental and they got her where she needed to be which was inhabited planets. With her arms crossed the Captain surveyed the docks yet again as she did before ever departure. The last sort of chance to either leave or go- a tradition that she had done since day one. "All aboard that's going aboard," the Captain spoke softly to herself before slowly turning on her heels as she walked backward up the ramp. This- this was a good feeling. Getting back out in to the black. Stopping just inside the hold she pressed the button that would shut and lock the hatch, the hissing sound of hydrolysis working as the airlock started to close behind her. "All right, Tom," she spoke through the intercom system. "she's all yours." As the engines started to whine to life Gwen took her time working her way back up to the crew living quarters where Martha had been working on dinner. It was early evening when the Cressida finally got its last cargo on giving her a full hold. Now it was just getting to Verbena without anyone knowing about the shiny little disc that was hidden away on her. Gwen's stomach churned finding, quickly, her appetite fading away. But she had to be social. Edited by Gwen MacKenzie, Sep 30 2009, 09:48 PM.

This day had not gone ideally. Surely, it had it's moment, he thought a moment of his brief interlude with Gwen. Otherwise, though, the day had been completely incompetent. First, waking up in his captain's bed, naked. Then, finding out his captain was his wife. The disc, and finally, the assistant. It wasn't so much getting an assistant that bugged him - he'd needed one for a while, and he never felt truly threatened by any newcomer - he was used to the wound accumulated with their kind of work, and he knew the crew better than they knew themselves. However, it was more that she showed up so suddenly - especially with the circumstances surrounding their sudden departure - that bugged him. And then, he caught her looking up the crew's confidential information. He was still fuming as he made his way up to the galley and to dinner...and other people. Drew had a system. He had planned for when the Doctor would come - how he would train her himself, have her examine the crew to see if she could spot all he could, have her fill out a file of her own for each, and then compare. He had a gorram system! He dropped into the seat next to Gwen, not hungry, but unable to deny the smell of the food the new cook was making up. |

When Drew plopped down beside of her, it was the barest of little smiles that the Captain ended up giving. The crew was still milling about getting ready for take off no doubt coming in sooner or later. It felt strange to her having so many people working on things she herself used to oversee that.. it made her shift in her seat a little. Reaching under the table out of view from anyone entering in to the room the captain reached her fingers out seeing the doctor's hand. He looked how she felt which wasn't saying anything good. "I guess you got to meet the newest addition to the crew?" she asked lightly, softly. |

Drew nodded slightly, softening slightly toward...his wife. He sighed. "Yeh couldn't'a given me anymore warning'n that, Red?" He squeezed her hand lightly, running his thumb across her palm. "Had no prep fer her." |

Yeah. Wife. Husband. That whole thing was going to take getting used to. Oh Gwen wouldn't blame him if he wanted to ignore it all or even if he wanted to find someone who could call the entire thing off. She was a ship's captain and a woman who had given up mostly on ever settling down yet here she was married. The thumb rubbing against the palm of her hand seemed to relax her slightly. It was weird- they had been together for just shy a year. Everything had moved so fast, but how long had they known each other before that? "Oh I wish I could have, băobèi, but I didn't know till she was almost here. I had been hoping to get you some back up for some time now though every time I brought it up to cooperate they denied the request." Lightly she caught his thumb with her fingers giving it a gentle squeeze of support. "I'm sorry." |

Drew sighed. He'd somehow managed to hold his anger against Coralyn's naivete, but Gwen's obvious care for him was simply too much for him to stand. "It's alright, Love." He offered her a small, roguish smile. |

That little smug smile of his caused her to roll her eyes. While she reserved the nickname of 'goober' for Jay, sometimes she felt like dubbing Drew Goober 2. It was the slight pang in her chest as she looked back to his face watching with a small smile of her own. Oh she cared deeply for him, that was for sure, it might have even been love. But there was still that underlying feeling of what had been in the back of her mind. "Did you hear the total headcount so far? I bet you couldn't guess how many folk we got here now." Gwen's little smile grew a little more, fingers moving to try locking with his. When she spoke again her voice was a little softer- a glance given toward the cook before looking back to Drew. "If.. you know.. you wanna move your stuff up to my cabin you can. If you want. If not I wouldn't blame you.." |

Jay padded into the Galley, the fine smells of the new cooks creations having drawn him from his rack. He had encountered a mixed bag as far as this day was concerned. It had started off alright, being in the Market with Jean and Raynor, buying the ring for Rora....and than it had completely fallen apart. Gwen had almost shot him over a joke, Rora will upset with him, and than he had to be subjected to a *shudder* medical examination. Granted the new assistant was pretty cute, Jay loved Rora, and they were potentially on the rocks at the moment. Regardless, it was not the best time to be asking for the girls hand. No matter, he was here for food, but he couldn't help but hear what was said as he walked into the Galley...he HAD to comment on his way by. "Sure Drew.....go ahead, we need the room." He offered the man a snarky grin. "Got ourselves a boatload of crew and passengers." |

"Did you hear the total headcount so far? I bet you couldn't guess how many folk we got here now." "I'm the medic on the ship, ain't I?" He shook his head, smirking. "Thirteen, 'live 'n kickin'. I need ta get the blood types of the new characters runnin' 'round, start building up stock. Maybe I oughta let Coralyn get it." Drew swiped a hand across his face, sighing. "If.. you know.. you wanna move your stuff up to my cabin you can. If you want. If not I wouldn't blame you.." "...we need the extra bunk room." Drew tossed a glare in Jay's direction. "You got nothin' better to do than listen in on personal conversations, boy?" He took a breath before turning back to Gwen, dropping his voice a few notches. Looking to her, Drew's brows came together, concerned. "Red...I know it's moving real quick-like for you. I ain't gonna lie - I'd love doin' that, but only if you want it." "I do-" Whatever Gwen was gonna say next was interrupted by Jay as he spoke up. She was still a little sore from his part of the conversation earlier. Had he even told Drew about the shotgun? It was a glance toward the doc that quickly found her shaking her head no to Jay just in case he hadn't. That was between them and only them. "We have plenty of room. In fact we have at least a bunk to spare as it is." But as her answer to Drew, she gently squeezed his hand under the table. Settling back in her seat the Captain simply gave her First Mate a rather nonchalant sort of look. "What you expecting to need that extra room for somethin', Jay?" Jay glanced over at her and Drew, settin' his plate on the table with a small clatter and plopping into his chair. It had been a long day, he wasnt exactly minding his usual manners at the moment. "I aint snooppin on anything Drew...and I aint no boy, few years younger than you there Doc.....if Im a boy, you're an old man. Its been a long day...dont need this fèifèi de pìyăn right about now." He glanced to Gwen. "Aint plannin' on using it for anything Cap'n. We need the room s'all." Jay busied himself with his dinner. |

Aurora sighed as she made her way back up to the galley, sliding in beside Gwen and Drew, dropping her head to her arms. She was glad to be off the planet, but she was still tired and ready to relax some. "Omigod. So glad to be back in the black," she mumbled into her arms. |

As Rora plopped down beside of her, Gwen couldn't help but chuckle at the younger woman's antics. It was a relief for everyone who had been on the ship for a long time getting back out in to the Black where work resided and the thrill of a new adventure. Releasing her hand from the doctor's she leaned over toward the mechanic, throwing an arm around her shoulder and giving her a hug. "Xièxie nĭ, mèimei. Y'all did me proud. Still think the refab crew is shell shocked about how fast of a turn over we had." Everyone had worked hard to get back out and gone. To say that Gwen wasn't proud would be a lie. "There will be at least a couple hours to a day on Verbena where I want y'all to rest up and enjoy it. Ship is fine enough to get us there and not break now." And it was a good cover. Whatever was on that disc... everything in the last couple of hours seemed to lead back to it. Glancing toward Jay she watched him for a moment or two shovel food in his mouth. Really between him, Tom, the younger guys, and Jean, Martha was going to have her hands full. "Thirteen crew and passengers. Six of them are new. Got ourselves a full house with room for at least one or two more." |

Jay glanced up from his coffee as Rora sunk into her seat. He glanced up at here. She looked beat, tired, but she looked beautiful. "Hi Rora, you look nice." That was all he could think about to say at the moment. She had looked at him with a look of total disgust after the incident earlier, and he was not sure how she would respond to him. |

Leaning against Gwen, Rora sighed. "Cressie will not break down for at least another four long runs. Unless you have me push her hard like you did to Shinbone," she said, prodding Gwen in the ribs slightly, laughing. Rora couldn't help but smile as she looked up at Jay. "I don't believe you, but thanks just the same." |

Fi entered the Galley and took in the occupants with a glance. The two newlyweds both had a hand under the table, likely holding each other from the glances that were going back and forth. Sweet enough to give her a toothache. She walked over to Rora and sat beside her at the edge of the seat, stretching her legs out and crossing her ankles. "I think we broke some of the new crew. They aren't built like they used to be," She shook her head in mock sadness and raised both her eyebrows, looking over at her second in command who was staring at their mechanic. Oh the drama on board. "Since you're up there, wanna get me something to drink? She gave Drew a sweet and vibrant smile as she settled further into the seat. |

Tom was waiting for the voice of Gwen to come through and tell him it was time go get going. He was anxious for it and he was ready to get off this planet and back into the black. His fingers were almost itching over the controls and he actually had to be careful so he did not jump the gun and fly off without the ship's hatch fully closed and everyone sealed inside. When those words came, he was ready and had her going. He was actually pleased that he could fly again, seeing as he was the pilot and had been angry that he had to stay on ground for so long. It was a good change to be flying again. The only damn thing that was going to ruin his mood was that he was going to have to eat with the rest of the crew. It was like those meals had to be mandatory. He could get away with skipping many of them, but this was the first meal as a full crew and back in the black. If he didn't go, he'd probably get yelled at or force to come down. Once he was sure they were out of atmo and actually a good distance away from the planet, he set Cressida on autopilot. He stood up from his seat and start down from the bridge, glancing back once at the panel before heading towards the galley. He saw there was already a good number of the other crew in there and he found an empty chair and sat down in it. "Good, there's food," he said reaching to fill his own plate. "Only reason I came down," he muttered. |

Coralyn made her way up the the galley, those ‘first-day-of-school’ nerves still very much in her stomach, despite her lengthy pep-talk in her mirror earlier. Still, nothing had gone too horrifically wrong thus far, and if she continued being polite and optimistic she could maybe go to bed happy. “Hello again, Captain. Good evening everyone.” She said, her scanning gaze lowering itself fairly sharpish as she seated herself. Despite their more or less limited correspondence she’d decided that she rather liked her new Captain. After all, not anyone would take a chance on a young Doctor with few references. And she could not help feeling that if Doctor Lancaster were in charge than she wouldn’t have... Though everyone seemed quite content to eat their dinner... or rather shovel their dinners near their faces (God only knew what her Mother would say if she could see this!) Coralyn wasn’t hungry. She was too nervous to be hungry. She’d be far better off sitting quietly and trying to assess the general attitude of the crew as well as their names and positions. |

Gwen snorted a laugh, giving her head a little shake before settling back in her chair. She wasn't going to eat quite yet either. There was just to much on her mind to focus on filling an empty stomach. "Well considering our luck sometimes it might happen again. You just keep her patched up and I'll try to keep her.. out of trouble." Of course that was near impossible with their crew- the new folk would learn that rather quickly. As Fi, Tom, and the newest doctor, Coralyn, all three entered in to the galley the Captain looked up nodding to each in turn. "Only reason you came down here was to eat? You're breaking my heart, Tom. I thought you liked watching the hilarity that ensues when we all gather for dinner." She couldn't help but poke at the young pilot. He spent way to much time worry about getting them places- it was one of the major reasons she wanted to see about a backup. When Carolyn spoke to her Gwen was quick to respond. "Ah Doctor Cardew. Hope you're finding things to be decent enough down in the infirmary for you? Drew here keeps a tight shift down there when we aren't causing him no troubles." Casting a quick glance and smile toward the older man, the red head shifted for an apple resting in the center of the table. |

Glancing up again, Coralyn answered quickly. “Yes, thank you. The equipment down there’s exemplary. I look forward to working with it.” Well, what was the meant to say? That her new Boss terrified her, the First Mate had made her stutter like an idiot and that she found Miss Grant to be rather distasteful? That wasn’t dinner-table conversation. That wasn’t even polite conversation. |
