It felt like it had been years since Drew and Gwen had been able to talk, but after Fi drifted off to try and crack the code, and Jay to get time with Rora - it was just them. Drew moved over to his supplies, looking over his list for the millionth time, just to check that he'd gotten all he needed. It felt awkward, and he sighed before turning, leaning against the counter to watch her. "What's on your mind, Red?" |

Gwen was just leaning against the wooden table in the room, rubbing her brow with the fingers of her right hand. Her head was killing her not quite literally but she could already feel her heart pounding in her ears. When all this was done she was finding some nice shiny planet with a beach to set down on for a few days and putting Jay in charge. It would never happen.. but she could dream about it couldn't she? It was Drew speaking that caused her to stir a little, mostly just making a grumping sound, before lowering her hand to slap against her leg. Why did he have to ask that? Of all the things.. well it was better than what it could have been. "Way to much and a whole lotta nothin'. I should go see 'bout when we can get outta here.." He could easily stop her from leaving. The medic was standing closer to the exit than she was. |

Drew didn't stop her, but, instead, simply spoke. "Dinner's in an hour or so. That new cook 'o yours is plannin' on gettin' the whole crew together for the meal." Drew eyed her, his tone, his demeanor, all serious - for once. "Talk to the crew later." He heaved a sigh, brushing a hand across his face. "When're you plannin' on facin' this?" |

Pausing just shy of the door, Gwen stopped, resting a hand on the hatch frame before looking back to Drew. Her green eyes were sad, bogged down by seeing things a person her age shouldn't have experienced. She'd seen the same look from Jay and even Drew before especially when they started talking about the War. Giving her head a little shake she pressed herself away from the sanctuary of the hall standing across the hatch from the older man. "What do you want from me, Drew?" the captain asked, voice barely above a whisper to keep her words from drifting. There was a tone to her voice that he'd be able to pick up. She never was good at lying to him. "I have a ship to run and a crew to keep out of trouble... Do you think adding a marriage in to the mix is gonna help things?" |

Drew ticked his tongue against his teeth, watching her carefully. Gwen was hurting for some reason, and he'd bid his life that it had to do with that mystery she'd carried with her since they'd both joined the crew of the Cressida. "You and I both know you've assembled the best gorram crew in the 'verse. They can handle, Reavers; they sure can hell handle a marriage." |

"But I can't, damnit." Looking away from Drew she locked her eyes on a spot residing across the room. Gwen couldn't look at him- she couldn't own up to having a weakness. "I can't... I can't do it again." Her face scrunched up, tears welling up in her eyes that she refused to shed. No way in hell was he gonna see her cry over something that he had nothing to do with. It was her past, damnit. Her thing to deal with eventually. |

Drew was visibly shaken at the sudden shift in mood. He straightened, moving to her. He knew that the liklihood of her giving into his comfort was slim to none, but he still put his hands on her arms, rubbing them lightly. Whatever it was, Drew knew she didn't deserve to feel this kind of pain, something she held onto so tightly. He pulled her to him lightly, his hand gently running across her back. "What can't you do again?" he asked after a few moments, his voice gruffly more quiet than usual. |

She tried to brush him off. There was no way in ruttin' hell she was going to let him see her like this. She was the captain, damnit, and it was just unacceptable! Though the instant that he was pulling her towards him she all but melted slightly against him. "This.." Gwen replied, taking a deep breath trying to control herself from letting her outward cool crumble in to little pieces. "His name.. was Gabriel. He had joined the 501st a few weeks before I got assigned to them but we took to each other like ducks to water." As she spoke the red head refused to look up at him. There was just no way she could. "Gabe was always a rank above me but that didn't matter to him or anyone. Our group was a well oiled machine. We did our assignments and we got out.. we just weren't expecting to fall in love." Raising her hands Gwen scrubbed at her eyes with the heels. Even the laugh she tried to add in was weak and slightly pathetic. "We were on Hera for three and a half months before the Valley. He asked me to marry him right there on the spot- had a ring and everything. Weren't noone to do it proper so we promised each other when the War was over we'd do it all official like.." "God.. I know you don't want to be hearing this. I'm sorry." Giving her head a shake, Gwen tried to push away form him, still refusing to look up. |

Drew felt a solid chunck of shock form in his gut and settle there. She didn't have to say what had happened to Gabriel; it was plainly written on her face. He took a deep breath, letting her slide away from him - just a bit. He kept his hands on her arms. "I got me a clean sleeve, Red. 'Tain't nothin' that oughta be kept inside like you been." He put one finger under her chin and tilted her head to look up at him. "We all got our hurts, but you never deserved to be hurt like that." |

"I killed him, Drew. If I hadn't tried to be a big damned hero and give our squad a chance to get back behind the lines... He gave the order to fall back. I didn't." Even as he tilted her head up without much fight her eyes stayed down, focused on something other than his face. "One stupid decision shattered everything." When she finally managed to look back up at him, tears were streaming down Gwen's cheeks. It wasn't fair for him to stand there and just listen like that. He should have been running from her, seeking out someone to null anything right then and there. "I can't lose someone like that again. I can't.. afford to get that close to someone and then just have it taken away like that because of.." "I'm sorry, Drew. I'm so sorry." |

"Woah, woah, Red - I ain't goin' anywhere," Drew told her, brushing his thumb across her cheek, wiping away her tears. "You need to understand a few things. We're a team, you and I, Red." |

"But what if you do? You know only a fraction of how deep we are into certain things. It goes way further than that. I can't lose you.. hell fire I shouldn't have let myself fall for you in the first place because of it." She didn't move though even if she wanted to and boy how she wanted to run. High tail it out of that room like a spooked cat looking at a big bad dog. Gwen liked him a lot- maybe even loved him if she let herself not be so stubborn to admit to it. If something happened to him, though, it would be the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back. |

He cast her a small smile. "Because I'm never leavin' your side, Red. You go, I sure as hell go." He wound his fingers through a lock of her hair, smirking a bit. "But, if you think this is over - I don't think you've been more wrong." |

Why was he taking this as a joke? It seemed like he was... to a degree at least. Gwen's eyes sharpened slightly before she smacked out a hand hoping to pop him on the stomach. "You are an insufferable old tyrant you know that, Drew? Crazy in the brainpan, completely off the way old son of a.." Sighing she looked away from him letting a rather unamused expression cross her face. "I'm old, Drew. Old and broken like a crazy jigsaw puzzle still trying to find her way in th' 'verse." Green eyes flickered back up toward him with a slight frown. "You have every chance to walk away from this now or you're stuck." |

Drew's brows furrowed in confusion, but he didn't bat an eye when she whopped him in the stomach. "Old my arse." He shook his head. "Why in the 'verse would I want to walk away, Red? Haven't you figured it out yet?" |

"Because you are just.. amusing me?" Half of her wanted to hear him say it while the other half didn't. Conflicting interests were always the hardest things to get over.. not to mention she had kept the ring and stuff that reminded her why it was all the way it was. Sad, yes, but she had good reasons. |

"Because I love you," he said plainly. "I may've been drunk when I married you, but I don't regret it in any way whatsoever." |

Have one stunned and slightly flustered captain standing infront of you, Drew. Gwen's jaw slacked slightly, her eyes going wide as well. Whatever she was going to say came out in broken words of 'What' 'But' 'You' and of course 'Huh?' "Are you sure that drink ain't still getting to you because, you know, we had quite a lot..." Watching him intently the captain was all but ready to smack him again if she had too. If he was pulling her leg.. |

Drew shook his head. "That the best kinda excuse you got? Do I need to pass some sorta test to prove it to ya?" He brought his hand up to cradle her chin in his hand, gently caressing her jaw with his thumb. |

Peeking her head outside into the hall to make sure noone else was around, the sneakiest of smiles crossed Gwen's face before she turned back toward Drew. "Only one way to find that out right?" Her hand reached out grabbing the front of his shirt to try pulling him closer to her. "Shut the hatch and lock it. I'm sure I can come up with a suitable enough test that would.. satisfy the both of us." Edited by Gwen MacKenzie, Sep 14 2009, 09:54 PM.
