About You What should we call you? -insert witty variation on Gem here- What is your gender? Lovely lady How can we get in touch with you? Oh, loads of places. xD For the complete list, consult my various other applications. How did you know we were here? A big, hairy, terrifying spider told me. *hides* Did you read all of the rules? Aye, aye sir! Show us a sample post, from any game. A recent one would be nice. Doesn’t have to be the character you’re applying for.
How many characters do you currently have on this board? I have three. Frankiedink, Ol’ Sluggie, and Doris too-awful-for-a-cute-nickname Purkiss Anything else you want to tell us before we begin? This was probably my hardest app to write, as Moody is such a developed character. I had to ask myself why he is the way he is, and, to make it even worse, consider how he’d be twenty years prior to his first appearance in the books. Plus, there was the big question: did he have his magical eye yet? I decided to give him the eye, though I made 1975 Moody has both legs intact. Anyways, I hope I did him justice. About Your Character Basics Full name: Alastor Trent Moody Nicknames: People tend to be too intimidated to call Alastor nicknames to his face, but he knows they call him Mad-Eye Moody behind his back. He doesn’t really mind. Other than that, his good friend calls him Tor. Ancestry: Half-Blood. At least, he thinks so. All he knows is his mum was pure blood, and she ran off before he had a chance to ask about his dad. Gender: A very tough, grisly male. Age: 50 Birthday: April 12th, 1925 Sorted into: Gryffindor Who do you follow? Alastor follows the “Good Side”, though what that means is not always clear. He is a ministry worker, but if Voldemort were ever to infiltrate, he’d turn in a second. Wand: 9 inches, elm, phoenix feather Personal Sexuality: Straight, he supposes, though Alastor’s never been partial to relationships. When he was younger and better looking, he would indulge in occasional one-night stands, but now he sees them as a big risk. Any girl at a bar could be a death eater in disguise. Likes: Alastor has quite a collection of anti-dark magic trinkets, which he thoroughly enjoys. He experiments with them, and even attempts to make his own. They help him with his passion, ‘killing as many damn dark wizards as I fucking can’. For Alastor, nothing beats the high of seeing a dangerous wizard carted off to Azkaban. The convict doesn’t even have to be Alastor’s own catch, though that just makes the high all the more sweet. On a more superficial level, Alastor likes to drink and smoke, and even indulges in the odd tidbit of gossip. Dislikes: Well, I hate to state the obvious, but I’ll say it anyways: Alastor Strengths: Moody is a very good judge of character, through natural skill and intense auror training. He is good at spotting lies, even without his various instruments. He’s also quite cautious, but that could be listed as a weakness, as Alastor can take his wariness to extremes. During his time at Hogwarts he excelled at (you guessed it!) Defense Against the Dark Arts. Alastor is also quite skilled at Transfiguration and Potions. That said, he had very few academic weaknesses, and is considered one of the strongest aurors within the Ministry. Weaknesses: Like I previously mentioned, Alastor is extremely cautious. This can get in the way of him making new friendships, and even co-existing with other human beings. If he gets the idea that someone is not a good person, he’ll be extremely rude and obnoxious, no matter who it is. Needless to say, Alastor has never been good at trust. He’s also quite set in his ways; he lived in the same crappy apartment for over twenty years, and he'd still be there if he didn't move in with Al. Goals: Alastor would love to personally destroy Voldemort. If this is impossible, sending all his followers to Azkaban would be satisfactory. He would be happy to die for this cause. On a personal level, he wouldn’t mind finding his mother and, in turn, his father. Alastor knows the odds of this happening are very slim, yet he hopes for it all the same. There is also the big unspoken goal of finding a cure for The Curse... But accomplishing this goal is so unlikely, Alastor won't even think about it. Fears: Alastor’s biggest fear is wasting his life. He would hate to think he’d not taken advantage of every opportunity to take down dark wizards; he couldn’t live with himself. He absolutely hates the thought of dying without a cause or without influence on the world. Alastor Moody wants to know he made some sort of difference, corny as that may be. He’s also extremely afraid of bears. He's also terrified of Al dying, but he's sortakinda coming to accept that, just a little bit. The fear of Al dying is being replaced with a fear of letting Al down in his wishes for Alastor to watch out for Sirius and Andromeda after Al's death. Tics, Quirks & Habits: Alastor swears like a sailor ((he'd swear a lot more than I'm going to include in posts, because I don't want to offend you delicate little flowers ^_^)) and drinks like one too. He has terrible personal hygiene, which is mostly because he doesn't care, though he also secretly enjoys the ribbings he gets from Al about it. Pet Peeves: Strangely, Alastor has few pet peeves. If you do anything on his absolute-scum-things-to-do list, then he hates you. If you’re honest, and loyal, and fighting for a good cause, he’ll like you. Generally, you’ll fall in between, and he just won’t really give a shit. There isn’t any small thing that makes Moody hate you. Favorite sounds and smells: Alastor used to like the smell of freshly mown grass, but lately his sense of smell has been leaving him. This is especially worriesome, as a keen sense of smell is key in detecting many poisons. His favorite sound is a low murmur of a crowd. In his experience, things happen during eery silences and loud eruptions. They rarely occur during low hums. Have you ever met a boggart? What does it look like? He has seen a boggart on countless occasions. You’d think Alastor’s boggart would be something deep, like a version of himself, wand-less, unable to save someone, but it’s nothing like that. It’s a bear. Plain, simple, and absolutely terrifying. Can you cast Patronus? What does it look like? What memory do you use? An auror who can’t cast a Patronus? Inconceivable! Alastor’s Patronus is extremely powerful, and takes the shape of a duck. He uses the memory of the night he and Al made up, at that awful party his boss had dragged him to. It promised to be such an awful night, but it was wonderful. What is the worst memory Dementors bring forward? The Dementors bring forward a couple memories for Alastor. When he was eight, his new mother told him he was adopted. He hated her for it, and went totally crazy, inadvertently blowing up half the house. Also, when he found out Al was returning to the Blacks, and when Al first got the cough. Dementors occasionally bring forward memories about recent failures in his work, but those have happened less and less as Alastor improves. If you were to find the Mirror of Erised, what would you see? Through his friendship with Dumbledore, Alastor was once offered an opportunity to look in the fabled mirror. He turned it down. Alastor isn’t sure what he’d see, and doesn’t really want to know. Tell me a couple secrets about yourself: Alastor can honestly say that he’s never been in love. He’s been heavily infatuated with someone, he's loved people, but never in love. Also, though he can complain about it all day, he enjoys working with bright students. He doesn’t like them when they’re young, but he loves to work with teenagers and young adults interested in pursuing aurordom. This is strictly on the hush-hush, however. Personality: Describing Alastor Trent Moody is no small task... I’m not quite sure where to begin. If you could only describe him in three words, they would be self-assured, loyal, and paranoid. Let’s start with self-assured. Alastor doesn’t second-guess himself, ever. Once his judgment is made, it will never be changed. This would be highly problematic if Alastor didn’t have such a great knack for reading people. Second, loyal. Now, I don’t mean loyal in the traditional friends-to-the-end sense. If his friend became a death eater, Alastor would kill him without question or guilt (or so he tells himself, at least). But Alastor is eternally loyal to anyone fighting for good, and will stand by that person in the face of adversity. Finally, paranoid. This has come out more and more in recent years, as Alastor has seen more evil in the world. The problem with hunting dark wizards is that you start to see them everywhere. Alastor has a great memory, and often brings up things that happened years prior. He catalogues memories in his head, and seemingly forgets about them, but they're always there, waiting to be used. His mind is extremely compartmentalized. This doesn't just apply to memories; his relationships are equally compartmentalized. Alastor doesn't always think about how one relationship might relate to another, which is one of his few weaknesses as an Auror. He's working on this skill. Alastor is also working on his bluntness, and his unwillingness to compromise. Well, so he tells his boss. He doesn't really view these traits as faults, since ninety nine percent of the time he's right in doing them. Looks Distinguishing Features: Well, you’d be able to easily identify Alastor’s face from either the magical blue eye in his right socket, or the big gaping hole where his right eye should be, depending on just how he died. Not-so-distinguishing features: Alastor usually smells like sweat. He has a number of scars scattered over his body, though they don’t create anything of interest (Alastor is rather jealous of Dumbeldore’s scar of a London Underground Map). Appearance: Alastor is quite... unique looking. He has dark brown hair flecked with gray, which is cut just below his shoulders, matching stubble, and one small brown eye. His other eye, as I've mentioned, is a rather extraordinary magical blue eye. It allows him to see things made invisible, and even through solid objects. This eye is much larger than his regular brown one. He has quite a big nose (massive might be a better word), competing with the magic eye for his most prominent feature, and a small mouth, with thin, dry lips. His face is rather pointy, with a sharp chin and cheekbones. The rest of Alastor's body is pointy as well, though it's not as obvious through his muscle. Alastor is quite keen on building muscle, and is very strong. Only recently has he started to put on any fat whatsoever. He's short, and believes he can make up for it in muscle mass. Alastor's dress sense is simple: practicality. There are countless hides in his wardrobe. There are many cotton pieces, good for layering, most covered with dirt and sweat stains. Alastor isn't overly concerned with how he dresses, and he has a very low standard of personal hygiene. He does have a few nicer pieces, mostly gifts, but they sit at the back of his closet unused. Place of Birth: After some digging, Alastor found he was born in a muggle hospital in Dublin. Immediate family: His adoptive parents are dead, and he has no idea where his real parents are. No siblings. Extended family: None that he sees. Far too many Aurors have had their families attacked, and Alastor wants to avoid that as much as possible. Other important people: Alastor has very few friends in the Ministry; he has more reluctant admirers of his work. The two people he’d consider most influential to him would be Albus Dumbledore and Alphard Black. He and Albus became friends through mutual contacts in the Ministry, and Alastor highly respects the man. They share similar beliefs about the importance of overcoming evil. Then, there is Alphard. Their friendship can't really be summed up in a few sentence, but I'll do my best. Alphard is the only person Alastor ever truly and really loved, though it was a platonic love. He's the most important person in Alastor's life, especially now that they're living together. Alastor finds it impossible to imagine life without him, though he has to deal with Alphard's impending death. Alastor also feels quite attached to Alphard's favourite relatives, Sirius and Andromeda. He's met the former on many occasions, and corresponds with him often, and would like to get to know the latter better. Pets: Alastor doesn’t like having any potential vulnerabilities, human or otherwise. History: Alastor's was born on April 12th, in Dublin. He can tell you that with absolute certainty. The next three years are a bit more hazy. He knows he was adopted at the age of three, and that he was with his reckless mother before that, but he has yet to ascertain where they lived. He doesn't consider it especially important. His adoptive parents were kind, and, until recently, he never felt the need to learn about his real parents. As for his adoptive parents, she was a witch, he a muggle, and they raised him quite tenderly for the first few years of Alastor's stay. She loved to read about all sorts of new kinds of magic, and tried it out, occasionally to disastrous results. Alastor loved to watch, and wanted to be just like his Mummy. His Dad didn't seem to like magic very much though. Things really went wrong when Alastor was eight, and his Mum told him he was adopted. He set half the house on fire in his rage. It was all cleared up, but that, in Moody's narcissistic child's mind, was the beginning of the end for his parents. His Dad grew more and more frustrated with his wife and Alastor's constant talk of magic. It was something he could never be a part of. Alastor realizes why he got angry now, but at the time he didn't understand. When Alastor came home from his third year of Hogwarts, his Dad wasn't there. He wasn't too heartbroken. To be completely honest, Alastor was never that attached to his adoptive parents, even his Mum. She raised him, hugged him, did all the right things, but he couldn't help feeling she wasn't his real mother. He excelled at school, but was never the social type. He mostly kept to himself. Alastor liked having lots of people around, but he generally didn't care to interact with them. Because he flew under the radar, he did not make Prefect or Head Boy. He played no sports and was on no teams, but he did enjoy his Hogwarts experience. Immediately upon graduating, Alastor moved to a crappy apartment in a dodgy area of London and began his Auror training. If he was to be perfectly honest, Auror training was easier than he thought it would be. He finished up, and became a Junior Auror. It was during this time in his life when he ran into Alphard. Alastor had seen Alphard at school, but Al was two years younger and a Slytherin, so they never conversed. He had heard about Alphard leaving his family though, and was intrigued. So, he went to speak with him. Alphard was standoffish, it seemed to Moody, but he accepted the invitation for a drink. A friendship flowed from that, with Alphard eventually moving across the hall. Then, of course, Alphard went back to his family. They had a massive falling out, and Alastor vowed to never see Alphard again. The time following was exceedingly difficult for Alastor, who became quite depressed. He focused on his work, but even that did not make it easier. He lost track of time, and just kept working, showing himself to be a very promising Auror. It was at a party some time later that Alastor ran into Alphard for the second time. Alastor had been forced to go by his boss, as it was a very important time for impressing possible donors, and Alastor was his best and brightest. Alastor saw Alphard, and wasn't sure what he was feeling. Apprehension? Interest? Well, it certainly wasn't hatred, like he'd expected, so they spoke a while, laughed, made up. This meeting was followed by correspondence, in which Alphard gave Moody tidbits of information about the Blacks (all in code, of course). Some time later, when the Blacks had loosened their reigns on Alphard, they met. These meetings increased in frequency over the years, and Alastor was quite content to have a real friend. Then Alphard got sick. Sick with something that they both knew would kill him, they both knew they could never cure. To make it even worse, they knew the exact progression the sickness would take. Alastor became very worried, desperate to find a cure, though deep down he knew it impossible. He spent more and more time at Alphard's mansion, now that Al's wretched cousins had left, spending all the time he could with his only friend. He saw Alphard become weaker and weaker. The only thing that really seemed to make him happy anymore was Sirius, his golden boy, and Andromeda. Sirius visited often, and was always a joy to have around. When Sirius came, it was almost like Alphard forgot about his disease. Alastor tried to forget, and would almost succeed until a cough would bring him back to reality. He didn't get how Alphard could be so cavalier about the whole matter, but he learned not to argue. It just made Alphard worse. Alastor was practically living there when Alphard asked him to move in, and so he did without hesitation. He left behind that flat he'd first rented, and that's where he is now, splitting his time between hunting Voldemort's followers and caring for Alphard. Misc Anything else you want to share? *cough* For the sake of my self-confidence, I will NOT compare my application to Spider's Alphard. *scrawls this over and over again, Bart Simpson style* Edited by Gem, Aug 7 2009, 09:25 AM.

I have GOT to tell you my ideas about Moody's eye. They do, of course, involve Alphard, and I think they're the one big thing we forgot to touch on last night. |

Alphard moves to his manor house before he gets sick, but Lucretia and Ignatius live with him. Anyway, one night, they've thrown a party for the Family, lots of Blacks bustly around, and his house elf, Itsy, tugs on his robes. Master Moody has arrived and seeks an urgent audience with him. Well, what Itsy DOESN'T say is that Master Moody has gotten away from a fight and is a complete mess, including the loss of his eye. Alphard manages to get Moody to Mungo's, but the Healers can do nothing for his eye. The damage was caused by a curse; it's irreperable. And what good is an Auror with only one eye? Alphard spends every minute he's allowed to (visiting hours) by Moody's side, but when he is kicked out, he goes to Arcturus, goes to the family libraries. There has to be SOMETHING. And there is. In one of the family vaults, he uncovers a magical blue eye. From what he can tell from the documentation, it is not Dark magic, just old magic... and it SHOULD do the trick. It does not match Moody's other eye and it doesn't really fit his face all that well, but it's not horrendously large. Alphard somehow gets permission to present it to Moody, and voila, Moody's got two working eyes again. |
