"I think Camille Jacq gives lessons," Regulus informed her, pretending not to know what she was hinting out, and moved his king's knight forwards and to the right. "You know, that French girl in Ravenclaw? She's good. Beat me last time I played her. You could learn a lot from her." |

"Hmm..." Doris pondered this for a moment. Admittedly, getting lessons from Camille Jacq would not be nearly so enjoyable as lessons from Regulus... but at the same time, what if she could get really good, and then impress Reg with her skill? Doris wasn't sure if impressing Reg was worth all the trouble of lessons though, when he was already bound to fall in love with her any day now. "There we go, back home..." she cooed, gently pushing her king into it's previous position. |

Shrugging, Regulus shifted the pawn in front of his knight forwards one space, leaving a long, defensive diagonal of pawns stretching back to his queen. "Camille's a smart girl," he said after a moment. "She can at least teach you the rules a bit better, right?" |

Doris pondered -or, at the very least, attempted to ponder- the board for a long moment before moving her queen forward one space. She sighed dramatically. This was definitely not as much fun as she'd hoped, even if she was getting Regulus' undivided attention. Well, the chessboard was, anyways. And she was playing on said chess board. So, same thing, really. "I s'pose so." Doris admitted. "But at least I know how the pieces move." Mostly. |

((I have no model board here, so this may not make 100% sense.... Eh. I can always change it. =ß)) "Which anyone could if they spent ten seconds studying the rules," Regulus said cuttingly. "There's a little more to chess than that." Moving his knight again, he examined the board before putting it down. "Check." |

Doris sighed. This wasn't much fun anymore, he just kept 'check'ing her or whatever it was called. Even though she loved playing with Reg, she thought she was looking like an idiot instead of impressing him. "You win." she said in defeat, knocking over her king as she'd seen so many people do at the end of a game. "Wanna play exploding snap instead?" That game was far less complicated. |

"Not really." Sweeping the pieces together, Regulus shrank the chess set again, closed it up, and put it back in his pocket. Sighing, he began clearing the rest of his things away, standing up. "You know what, Doris? If you actually tried, instead of relying on other people to do all the work for you, you might be a fairly passable chess player. Even a good one, if you worked at it. Actually, the same goes for a lot of things, with you." Picking up his quills and parchment, he leant on the table, the only time in his life he ever intended to bring himself that close to her voluntarily, and said flatly, "You're lazy, Purkiss. That's your problem. You're lazy, and you don't want to do things for yourself, and you don't want to admit that you can do things for yourself, because then you might have to take responsibility." Sighing, he stood up. "You won't succeed if you won't try, Doris. I'm sorry, but that's how life goes." |

Doris listened to Regulus' speech in quiet awe. At first she wasn't quite sure if he was insulting her or encouraging her, but then he got to the bit about her being lazy and she felt herself tearing up. She managed to hold them back till the end of his speech, but once he'd finished a wave of tears fell from her brown eyes. There was so much she wanted to say... she did try, she probably tried a million times harder than someone like Regulus could ever understand... She wasn't lazy, she just didn't care about chess, she'd only played to impress him... she didn't see the point in learning if she was just going to go batty like her mother anyways... But none of these feelings could be expressed into words, and so Doris stood up and ran to the girl's dorm without uttering a single syllable. Edited by Gem, Aug 29 2009, 08:43 AM.

Regulus sighed. Irritating though she was, he honestly hadn't meant to be so rude, and he certainly hadn't meant to make her cry. She just... she had... she was, he finally settled on, probably the only person in the world (except Sirius) who could make him quite so angry so easily. And it was true. He knew it was true, even if she didn't - that she didn't try. That, maybe, she'd even convinced herself it wasn't worth trying. She hung around with the wrong people, aside from anything else. The poor (he managed to stop himself thinking 'pathetic') girl had low enough self-confidence already, without someone like Dolores Umbridge to tell her every day how useless she was... Okay, so maybe Regulus was just a little bit sorry for her. And he hadn't meant to snap like that. But there was a kernel of selfishness inside him which said, quite clearly, that it was a good thing he had. At least she'd gone away now. Sighing, he rubbed the bridge of his nose and started towards the boys' dorms, gnawing on his thumbnail. |
