Taking her rook with his bishop, Regulus looked up briefly. "Fine," he said flatly, and went back to studying the board. That had been a better move than he had expected, although he suspected that was more through luck than judgement. |

"Yeah, I went to a Quidditch Game over the summer. It was really interesting!! You play seeker, right?" Doris said, grinning. She looked at the board, absolutely unsure of where to move. Then she remembered something Dolly had advised her about guys. "Where do you think I should move?" she asked flirtatiously, batting her eye lashes. |

"If I told you that," Regulus said, even more flatly, "there wouldn't be much point in playing, would there? It'd be like playing chess against myself, which is unsatisfying at the best of times. Do you have something in your eye?" he added after a moment, raising one eyebrow. He had restrained himself from telling her to move for one main reason, actually; he couldn't decide whether to take pity on her (knight's pawn forwards one space; check in four moves) or make things quicker (queen's knight to... well, anywhere but where it was). So he had decided to do neither. |

"Hah, if anyone could play chess against themselves, it'd be you Reggie, er, Regulus." She looked at him adoringly. She studied the board carefully. Why couldn't he have just told me where to move!? Eventually Doris moved her Queen's knight out and to the left. Upon letting go of the piece, she looked up at him, hoping for some sort of approval. Oh, he has such lovely eyes. Sighing slightly, Regulus reached over, eyes flicking over the board as though he couldn't believe that she would actually be that stupid, checking for a trap, his keen mind whirring through every way she might take things. Then, after a moment's consideration, he picked up his bishop and took the knight she had just moved. "Check," he said flatly, looking at the clear path between his bishop and her king. Then, because he was feeling particularly generous (Merlin alone knew why), he added without looking up, "I'd block with the knight, if I were you. You're going to lose a piece either way; it might as well be an unimportant one." After all, he said to himself, if she hadn't already worked out that moving her queen there would be the worst thing she could possibly do (which, given that there were only two moves she could legally make, wasn't difficult) then beating her would be easy enough with or without a couple of tidbits of assistance. |

Check... check... what the hell does check mean? Doris thought urgently, looking over the board. Then she remembered. He could take her king. She studied the board, and saw where Regulus could finish the game if she didn't stop him. Doris most certainly wanted to keep playing, if only to stare at those sexy eyes... and sexy lips. And hands. And hair. And nose. And ears. "You're right, Regulus, block with the knight. Excellent strategy." She said in her best matter-of-fact tone (she looked to Dolores for inspiration). After making the move, Doris sighed dramatically. "You are just so good at this Reg!" she cooed, reaching across the board in an attempt to grab his hand. |

Regulus reached out, shifting his bishop again to take her knight, and incidentally dodging her hand in the process. "Check," he repeated, although as far as checks went, there weren't many that were easier to get out of - any legal move she made would take his bishop - and he knew a lot of people who wouldn't even have bothered to point it out. Still. It was check anyway, and Regulus was a stickler for the rules. She was in check, so he would say so. Even if it did mean sharing more than a couple of civil words with her. |

"Ooh, ooh!" Doris squealed, nudging her pawn out to take Regulus' knight. She giggled at what she perceived to be her own brilliance. "I can see why you like this game so much, Reg, it's so fun! Almost as fun as writing you poems..." She trailed off and gave a great lustful sigh. "Have I ever told you that you have beautiful eyes?" Edited by Gem, Aug 10 2009, 02:37 PM.

"You can't do that," Regulus said firmly, shifting the pieces back. "Your king's still in check. Moving your king into check's against the rules." He spoke slowly, as if to a small child. "You have to take my bishop. It's the only legal move you can make. Take it with your king or with your queen, but you have to take it." Ignoring the comment on his eyes, he leant back in his seat, steepling his fingers, and settled back to watch her. "That's the thing about chess," he said, in a slightly lecturing tone. "It teaches you the value of keeping your eye on the whole board, not just bits of it." |

"Oh." said Doris sadly, tears welling up in the back of her eyes. "I'm sorry Reg." She moved her king forward to take his bishop. "Maybe I just need someone to teach me... someone like you." She perked up considerably at this idea, and the tears quickly went away. |
