Turning the board around so that the black pieces were on her side of the board, Regulus moved one of his rook pawns, a standard open move. He'd go easy on her,he decided, at least until she took one of his pieces. Then, he'd bring out his queen, and she'd be checkmated in... no more than ten moves, he estimated, unless he'd sorely misjudged her abilities. He certainly hoped he hadn't sorely misjudged her abilities. If this game lasted more than ten minutes, he was going to regret it. |

Doris watched his first move with apprehension. Gosh, he looks cute when he's concentrating. "Interesting..." she said, hoping it sounded smart. After he was finished she studied the board, trying to look thoughtful, and then moved one of her rook pawns as well. She looked up, and forced a confident smile. She had never been good at appearing self-assured, but hanging around Dolly had taught her a few simple things about projecting confidence. She hoped she was pulling it off.

Considering the situation for all of ten seconds - he had already plotted out several possibilities as soon as she put her hand on the pawn - Regulus moved another pawn, to leave his white bishop open, and sat back, examining the board thoughtfully as he waited for her to move. There were ten ways he could see of gaining checkmate in under five more moves, but all of them relied on her making exactly the right moves. |

Doris pondered the board for a minute (well, not really, she was actually pondering Regulus' hair) and then made the exact same move as Regulus. She worried it would look like she was copying him, but figured in the first few moves that wasn't such an issue. It would be later on, if the game got there without him slaughtering her, that she might actually have to use her own mind. |

Almost before she had let go of the pawn, Regulus' hand flashed out, and he moved his bishop diagonally one square, so that it had a clear path to her rook. Perfect. If she mimicked him, he could easily take her bishop without putting his in danger. If she didn't... he could easily take her rook. Again without threatening his bishop. This was dissatisfyingly easy. If he hadn't been in such a hurry to win and get away from her, he might almost have refrained from making that move. |

Doris thought about his move. He moved a little too quickly, he was obviously very sure of himself. She thought about straying from her initial plan of copying him, but then she realized she'd have no idea what else to do! So she made the same move as him, gently pushing her bishop just one square. She looked up at him afterwards, the confident grin still plastered on her face, though she was feeling less and less sure of herself by the second. |

Moving swiftly and surely, Regulus pushed his bishop into hers, lifting hers neatly off the board. "First blood," he observed dispassionately. "Your move." |

"Hmmm..." said Doris, not quite sure what to do. Luckily, she did know how all the pieces moved (she watched Regulus play enough) and so moved her King's Knight to F6. She wasn't really sure what she was doing, but at least she hadn't made a huge mistake, like Dolly always did during chess. |

Frowning for a moment as his eyes flicked over the board, Regulus nodded slightly to himself, then pushed the third pawn along from the edge out to join the first two, one space back from them, so that both were guarded. That should stave off attack for long enough for him to form a proper offensive. He was startled to find that, more from habit than anything else, he was stretching things out; he could have had her in check in a couple of moves, had he so wished. |

Doris hummed to herself, and tried to formulate the least stupid move. Eventually she settled for moving her queen's pawn forward one space. She realized that, though her and Regulus were connecting on a deep intellectual level, they weren't connecting oh any other level. She decided it would be best to start a conversation. "So, Reg- I mean, Regulus... How is Quidditch going?" |
