"Fine," Regulus said brusquely, still trying to focus on the code. He'd found B now, which had been eluding him, and was the best part of finished, but her shrill voice kept breaking into his concentration.

Maybe, he thought in increasing desperation, he could challenge her to chess, and if he won, she would have to leave him alone for the rest of term. But then, that would probably just make her even more enthusiastic...

Doris sighed. She wasn't quite sure what to say; she was hoping he'd be a tad more talkative!
"So..." she said quietly, rapidly searching her mind for possible conversation starters. Something he enjoyed (like puzzles), but something she understood (no puzzles). OOH, perfect idea!

"Did you meet any girls over the summer?" she asked, trying to appear coy. "I certainly met my share of young men. But I sent them all away, saying I was promised to one Regulus Black!"

"Then you sent them all away on false pretences, which is a shame," Regulus said coolly, looking down at his parchment, then made a face and crossed out several things neatly. "As a matter of fact, I met a very nice girl in Egypt." Nicer than you by a long shot. "She beat me at chess. That's usually a good sign."

Don't be such an idiot, Reggie. The voice in his head sounded curiously like Sirius. Making polite conversation isn't going to get you out of this one. Make some sort of excuse and get out of there.

"Oh." replied Doris simply, again not quite sure what to say. After a moment, she came up with a comeback. "Well who wants those brainy girls? So dull! You want a girl who can show you a good time!!" She winked saucily at him, and congratulated herself on recovering the situation.

"I want those brainy girls," Regulus said flatly. "It may come as a surprise to you, but some people seek intellectual stimulation in a companion." His voice had taken on a certain unusual acidity. He objected to this perhaps more than to anything else she had said so far; it proved beyond all doubt (not that he had had any doubt) that she didn't know him at all, and was clearly obsessed with him purely on principle.

"Oh well DUH, you want someone you can talk to, but you don't need brains to have a smart conversation!" she explained quite seriously. "Dolly says she's quite smart, and I'm not, and we still get on fine. That's what'll happen with me and you!"
Doris stood up and walked over to him, the few feet between the chairs being far too much between her and her love. She attempted to put her hand on his.

Regulus moved his hand swiftly, as if by accident, to put his quill down, deftly avoiding her touch. "You and Dolores aren't in a relationship," he pointed out. It was more polite than pointing out the obvious fact, which was that Dolores was hardly more intelligent than Doris - just bossier and more self-assured. "Personally, one of my criteria for a girlfriend, though, is that she should be somebody I can sensibly play chess against. I played chess against you, once, remember? In second year. I beat you in four moves."

"Dolly and I have a relationship! We have friendship. See, two ships!?" Doris exclaimed gleefully, trying to show off her intelligence. "And as for Chess... Chess doesn't show how smart you are! Besides, that was second year, I'm probably better now! I've been practicing!" It was a lie, of course. She'd meant to practice, in order to impress Reg, but hadn't gotten around to it yet.

"Two ships that pass in the night, but speak not," Regulus muttered, still trying to focus on his code. "Rather like chess and intelligence, I'll give you that. Friendship takes a certain sort of relationship, and chess takes a certain sort of intelligence." Sighing, he sat back with his arms folded, then finally reached into his breast pocket and pulled out his chess set.

It had obviously suffered from the glitter incident. Even after two days of carefully-researched countercharms, the Cleaning Charm hadn't been a hundred percent effective, and there was still glitter clinging to the board here and there. Distractedly casting another Cleaning Charm, he began to set up the board expertly with half-inch pieces.

"Engorgio," he muttered, pulling out his wand. "Do you play black or white?"

Oh shit.
She was screwed. Screwed, screwed, screwed!! She had to play... What choice did she have? Either play, or look like a total idiot.
"Ehm... black." Doris said, remembering white went first. If she was Black she could just mimic all of Regulus' moves. Or so was her plan. She could see she'd need a chair, and so pulled the nearest armchair over to the other side of the table. Though she'd like to sit next to Regulus, there really was no way to do that in Chess. She sat down, and tried to look excited.
