Regulus frowned slightly, stretching out in his chair - it was his chair; third from the fire, and you could clear off out of it if you weren't Regulus Black - and tapped his lip thoughtfully with the end of his quill. Thankfully, not the inky end.

In front of him, resting on a large table, were two pieces of parchment. The first, which was full of writing already, was written in odd symbols, which he had carefully numbered. On the second page - the one he was working on - the numbers and symbols had been replicated, and most of them had English letters written under them in his flowing script. Slowly and painstakingly, under them, he was reproducing the first parchment in plain English.

He looked absolutely content. As far as he was concerned, this was heaven. The fire was burning in the grate; it was warm rather than hot, though, and the flames reflected nicely off the wet ink on the parchment. The code was a challenge, but it was one he was beating, and he felt the familiar rush of euphoria that accompanied the completion of a puzzle already beginning to build up. Nobody was being noisy, too - there was a miracle. In fact, since it was quite late in the evening and a lot of the students had already gone to bed (or, at least, to their dorms) the common room was almost empty.

If he didn't keep finding traces of red glitter on the parchment, it would be perfect.

Sighing as he finished the first line, Regulus stretched, smoothed down his short black hair distractedly, and leant forwards again, silver eyes fixed on the parchment.

Bliss.

Doris Purkiss had not been enjoying her first days of classes. Somehow, she hadn't gotten the chance to speak to Reggie yet! The very thing she'd been fantasizing about all summer! She was feeling really quite depressed about the whole matter as she entered the Slytherin Common Room late that evening, having served her first detention of the year (for attempting to steal Peter's underpants as a gift for Dolly).

She was part way across the room before she noticed him sitting there, by the fire, in his usual chair. How she didn't immediately notice him, she didn't know. Over the summer her Reggie-dar seemed to have disappeared. No matter, she knew he was there now, and her spirits soared. Doris ran over to him.

"Hi Regulus!!" she squealed. "How was your summer? Good! I hope so!!"

Regulus groaned mentally, his good mood slowly beginning to ebb away already. He'd managed to avoid her for two and a half days - why did she have to show up now? Now, when he'd just managed to slip into one of those happy, puzzle-induced dazes?

And, Merlin, how was it humanly possible to make one's voice so... so high? And so piercing? And... UGH!

"It was all right," he said, in carefully neutral tones, and leant forwards over his parchment again, hoping against hope that she might see he was busy and leave well enough alone. He carefully refrained from saying anything else about his holiday, and from the automatic And yours? that rose instinctively to his lips - he didn't want to start up a conversation with this... this... girl!

"Oh!" he said after a moment. "Psi!" Snorting softly at his own stupidity in not seeing it sooner, he added a Z under one of the symbols on his parchment, scribbling a couple of letters into place in his translation.

"Oh Reggie, it was good? My summer was terribly dull. I wrote a poem for you today though! Want to hear it?" Doris didn't wait for an answer. She cleared her throat, and prepared to recite one of her arsenal of Regulus poems. This one was specially approved for sharing, because it wasn't so obvious about marriage and babies.
"How I miss my Regulus
All summer long I wait and hope
I find myself so alone
All I can do is cry and mope

But then September finally comes
I will see my dear Reg soon
I'm as happy as a butterfly
Finally leaving my tight cocoon

I see Reg across the table
As he munches on chicken and peas
But I never get a chance to speak
Oh my Reg is such a tease"

She said it with a certain amount of pride, for Doris loved her compositions, and she knew Regulus would love it too! "I can add another verse now that we've seen each other." She added happily.

"I don't like being called Reg," Regulus informed her politely, gritting his teeth, and poring over the code again. Not to mention that a drunken troll could write better with a dragon beating it over the head, he added mentally, but - given that he was, after all, a fairly polite boy - didn't say so aloud.

"Why don't you go and write that verse now?" he added after a moment, when she showed no sign of buggering off and leaving him alone. "It'll really raise my spirits."

Which it would. Getting rid of the clingy, hyperactive moron would raise his spirits immensely. She was seriously damaging his ability to take any satisfaction in the code he was breaking, and that was the most annoying thing of all; if she hadn't gone when he'd finished the translation, he was going to miss out on the buzz of achievement that he normally got, and that would just be annoying.

"I have a good start for it," he added acidly, when she continued to linger. "I love breaking his concentration/ When he's trying to crack a tough code. See where you can go with that."

"Well everyone needs a nickname, silly goat!" Doris exclaimed, putting her hand on the arm of his chair, alarmingly close to him. "I would, but I need something to write about! Our wonderful reunion! A hug, at least, or maybe more..." She lowered her voice it what she hoped was a seductive manner, and winked and Regulus. "Haha, and that's a good start Reggie! We should write it together! It'd be soooo romantic! Heehee!" Doris giggled -cackled, more like- and batted her eyelashes at him.

So far, this was going quite well. She'd complimented him, read him a poem, and he'd engaged her in conversation!

"Oh, so is that what you're doing? A code? Oh, you're so SMART Reggie!" She added, peering down at the paper.

"Hardly. It's a pretty simple substitution code with elements of scrambling." He rolled his eyes, scribbling something on his parchment. "Anyone can solve codes like this, with the application of a bit of logic. The key is to find out what E is." As he spoke, he was shuffling away from her in the seat, torn between hoping she wouldn't notice (because it was pretty rude) and that she would (and not think he was just playing hard to get). "And I'm a terrible poet. You should go and find someone else to write it with. Maybe that friend of yours. What's her name? Dolores."

Just go away! Go the hell away! Now! he willed her, as though he could somehow force her to do so by willpower alone.

"Oh I see... " She studied the paper for a long moment, her brow furrowed. "Nope, I still don't get it!" Doris laughed. When she looked back up, she saw Reggie had moved over considerably in his seat. "Oh Reg, are you making room for me? I'm skinny, but I really don't think there'd be enough room for the both of us in that seat!" She said with a laugh, but made a move to sit on the chair all the same. "Oh, you mean Dolly? She's asleep, probably. Wouldn't want to disturb her. But here you are alive and..." Apparently another adjective was just beyond her, as she finished the sentence with a very creepy sigh.

"My name," Regulus said, slowly and calmly, "is not Reg. My name is Regulus. Reg-u-lus." Sighing, he leant over the parchment again, scrutinising it closely. The problem was that he didn't want to - couldn't - leave the code half-done, even for the length of time it would take him to escape to his own dorm. He hated leaving things unfinished.

But he couldn't concentrate with Doris breathing down the back of his neck.

"I was making room for my legs, not you," he added, quickly pulling up his legs before she could sit down, so that he was curled in the chair, which looked a lot more comfortable than it was. "There are lots of chairs, you know. I wouldn't have to make space for you on mine." Forcing himself not to look at her, he tried to concentrate on his code-breaking.

It was impossible.

"Okay, okay, I'll call you Regulus when we're in public." she said with a huge grin. Doris then leaned in towards Regulus' ear, and whispered "But I'll still call you Reg when we're alone." She giggled gleefully as she pulled away from him, and loped over to take a seat. Sure, Doris was a tad disappointed they hadn't cuddled, but he'd invited her to sit down! Well, sorta.

"So, how have your classes been so far?" She asked sweetly, not letting him focus for even a second on his puzzle.
