"Transfiguration is your strength," Severus reminded Lily, "not mine. After this year, I don't know if I'll continue taking it." Transfiguratin was fussy, but not in a way that he liked. It was all the wrong kinds of meticulous, and while Severus appreciated its uses, he personally had had enough of it. "What were we supposed to do for it again?" He picked up Lily's Transfiguration textbook and flicked through a couple of pages, with no idea what he was meant to be looking for, if anything. |

"Eh..." Lily responded, twirling a bit of hair around her finger. "Various methods on correcting botched Transfiguration involving small mammals, I believe. There was actually a bit about Potions in there, as sort of a last-ditch emergency attempt, if your rat or vole seems unable to be salvaged." |

Who would want to salvage a rat or vole anyway? That was the one vital thing about Transfiguration that Severus had never relaly understood. Why the hell would you want to turn an animal into something inanimate anyway? At least by the time you got to the animal bits in potions they were all dead already and it was rather rare that you had to harvest the parts when they were below a certain age. But in Transfiguration you were always using rats or kittens or other small mammals. It just seemed like such a waste. And what happened to the poor things afterwards? Did anybody ever think about how that rat felt to suddenly become a teacup? "That's it," Severus decided on the spot. "I'm not taking transfiguration next year. If I have to turn small animals into inanimate objects they might as well be going into something useful." Like a potion. |

"Yes, well I'd gladly opt out of Transfiguration, but it's sort of necessary for most careers. I mean, no one actually uses kittens to make dinnerware. I think it just, you know, gives us the basics. Which we then apply to more practical scale. I hope." Having finished her sandwich, she leaned back, putting her arms over her head. "It's much too nice out right now to think about the future, though."

"I would imagine this would be the perfect time," Severus disagreed, though he leaned back against the tree trunk and looked up at the branches overhead and the tiny bits of sky he could see through the leaves. "It's quiet, sunny, a nice time to be whimsical..." Though if it had been anyone else under the tree with him he wouldn't be suggesting anything so optimistic. |

"Whimsical," Lily repeated softly. "I didn't know you did whimsical. But I suppose you're right." She closed her eyes, enjoying the sun and the breeze. "It's nice to know there are always going to be more days like this, even after we're long gone from Hogwarts." |

"I'm often whimsical, when I'm with you," Severus admitted, a touch stiffly even though it was true. He was different around Lily than everyone else. Maybe because she was actually nice to him and didn't expect him to be anything else back. Maybe because she wouldn't consider it some kind of sneaky trick. "Days like this might be fewer than we think," Severus added, a bit more serious. He was thinking about Lucius' letter again. |

"I highly doubt that," Lily said, opening her eyes again and sitting up, assuming he was referring to the recent string of attacks. "No matter how much they hate us Muggleborns, I doubt they'll blow up the sun. Or stop the breeze from blowing. That's just not something they can do. And I'm sure they wouldn't want to. Certainly they must hold some of their super exclusive fancy parties outdoors." |

"I wouldn't know. I've never been to one." Severus sighed. "My family isn't exactly welcome around most pureblood households. Anyway, I didn't mean that they'd blow up the sun or stop the wind from blowing. I meant that we might not be able to relax this much anymore. Things are getting pretty heated out there. I know we can't see it here at Hogwarts, but you hear things..." Or, well, Severus heard things. People who read the Daily Prophet heard things... |

"Let's get back to whimsical, shall we? We can talk of frolicking unicorns and dancing hippogriffs." With her right hand she started picking at the grass next to her. "Or, if you'd like, more normal things, that don't have to do with an impending disaster. Homework, homework was safe. Let's expand from that. I got a new set of quills," the last part was a pathetic offering of a conversation starter, meant to be ignored. |
