There was always a very relaxed atmosphere out by the lake. It was calm, quiet, and usually the only seats one could find were on the grass or in the trees, which discouraged a lot of people from going there. Severus had claimed a spot beneath one of the willows - not the whomping one, of course - and was sitting with his back against the trunk, quill out, nose in his copy of Advanced Potions Making. He had already crossed out a few things and added in a note or two in the margins. Not much, but enough that you could already tell what his opinion of the original author was. Severus just had a knack for some things, and making potions had always seemed to be one of them. Amongst other, less savoury things that under no circumstances was he ever going to tell Lily. Ever. Severus tapped the feather of his quill against the side of his book, frowning a little. O.W.Ls this year. He had already been told by every single teacher who's class he'd been in so far that this year would be important. Make or break. And on top of all of that he had Lucius to contend with. For the thirtieth time he pulled the crumpled piece of parchment out of his sachel and read over the short letter again. Severus could read between the lines. He knew who Lucius was talking about when he mentioned an interested, powerful third party. What was he to do about that exactly? On the one hand it was intriguing, very, very intriguing. On the other hand... Lily was a muggleborn. |

"Whatcha got there?" Lily asked cheerfully, roughly throwing down her bag, followed by a few textbooks. She then proceeded to plop down the the ground in an exceedingly ungraceful manner. "A love letter?" she teased, before putting up her hands in the customary "just kidding" signal. |

Severus' head jerked up, a little guiltily. She'd already seen the note, so there was no point in hiding it now. "It's a letter," he explained, a touch uncomfortable, "from Lucius... Our families know each other." That wasn't quite a lie. Their families did know each other, but the Malfoys avoided the Snapes as much as possible. Severus was only tollerated thanks to his profficiency with certain curses and the fact that his own particular viewpoint on the world meshed with theirs. |

Lily briefly made a face, then quickly opted to pursue a different thread of conversation. "So, what first. Studying, inane gossip, or my weekly Potter rant?" Pulling her bag onto her lap, she pulled out two sandwiches she had "borrowed" from the houseelves. "And do you want bologna or turkey?" |

"Turkey," Severus answered promptly. He had never really been a fan of meats that seemed made entirely for the purpose of sandwiches. Turkey at least could be made into other things. It was versatile, and he liked that. As for the other subjects... Severus closed his potions book, letting the letter from Lucius rest between its pages. "Lets start with something easy," he said, "something we don't have to think about. How about homework?" |

"Homework?" Lily laughed. "Homework is your idea of something you don't have to think about." She shifted her position to make eating the bologna sandwich easier. "Well, I, for one, have loads of it. Transfiguration, Potions, Charms. Name a subject and I have homework in it. Even if I'm not in the class." This last bit was, of course, an exaggeration. "I don't see why the professors have to dump this all on us so early. I know, O.W.L.S and all, but they're in the Spring." |

"I think it's supposed to be practice," Severus replied, shrugging a little as he unwrapped the turkey sandwich. "Personally I think they'd do better to just give us the information and leave us to it. That would weed out everyone who didn't have the dedication to succeed." Lily already knew about how much Severus disliked certain teachers' methods, so that little rant wouldn't come as much of a surprise. "Anyway, I might have exaggerated. It's only potions homework that I don't need to think about." |

"Teachers are here to teach, it's what they're for. I, personally, couldn't teach myself all of this material. Though, perhaps with Binns, that theory would prove true." She paused a moment to think about the hypothetical situation. "Yeah, yeah it would." She shook her head to rid herself of the fantasy. "And not everyone's as brilliant at Potions as you are. I, for one, am having a very difficult time coming up with uses for hellebore." |

"You are?" Severus asked, surprised. Then again, he rethought after a moment, she didn't really have the same way of thinking. Lily wouldn't naturally jump to the nastier conclusions. "Hellebore is usually used in medicinal potions," Severus answered, "usually sedation. But it can... also... be used in dark magic." And poisons. There were plenty of ways to brew hellebore into an even nastier poison than it was naturally. |

"Oh, I was looking at antidotes. Totally wrong section," Lily remembered. For some reason, she had convinced herself hellebore was used in antidotes, and had scoured that chapter for about an hour or so. "Now I feel a bit daft." She reached over to pull out her potions book, and began to scour it. "You don't happen to have a headstart on the Transfiguration essay, do you?" she asked hopefully. |
