Tea for the Slug Club; A quiet get-together

Slughorn's first party of the year was always a subdued tea, as he invited a wide range of students in order to gauge their potential, and he didn't want to waste expensive supplies on students who simply weren't up to snuff. He hadn't gone to the trouble of decorating his office for such an affair, though he had cleared his desk to make room for tea and pastries.

Assorted cakes and sandwiches sat on beautiful china, courtesy of the house elves, and three different kinds of tea were brewing on Slughorn's desk. He sat patiently in a large armchair, waiting for the first students to arrive.

Severus Snape wondered what the hell he was doing here. He wasn't sociable. Or, more accurately, he wasn't comfortable in social situations that included more than a couple of people at a time. Especially if he didn't know most of the people in the room personally.
In fact, the only person who he did know (and like) was Lily Evans. She was the main reson he was here actually. This was another excuse to talk to her outside of class, and in a setting that wasn't all about homework. And besides that, Severus always knew Lily was brilliant. He sort of liked seeing that other people realised it too.

Lily stood briefly in the door frame, lightly rapping on it twice before proceeding through the threshold. "Hello, Professor!" she said, cheerfully, already eying the pastries set out. Turning, she also saw Severus, which was incredibly unexpected. He had, on many occasions, expressed his distaste for this sort of thing. "Hey, Sev!" she said, her tone expressing her surprise.

"Oho, Severus!" exclaimed Slughorn, getting up from his armchair so quickly his belly jiggled. "How was your summer? Practice your potions, did you? I say, skill like that, you'll discover the cure for Lycanthropy." The old man laughed jovially, patting his Potions protege on the back. He turned when he heard the door, but before he could answer Lily entered the office.
"And Miss Lily Evans!" he said happily. "Why, you certainly have grown up over the summer, haven't you?" He noted, picking up a scone from the plate. "I trust it was well."

"Lily," Severus greeted his friend a little stiffly, already effected by the social scene even without the room filled to capacity. "It's good to see you here."
Even better to see a friendly face. Even if his own face was blandly calm, the look in his eyes clearly pleaded for Lily to save him, to remind him again that being social wouldn't actually do him any physical damage.

Lily gave Severus a look in return, one that she hoped conveyed, 'Relax, I'll lead the way.'
"Yes, Professor, I had quite a pleasant summer. And I swear, you look younger," she could feel Sev silently judging her as the words slipped out. "I hope you have more stories for us, from this summer."

"Oh, you certainly know how to charm an old man." Slughorn replied, though he felt quite chuffed. He had tried a new anti-aging cream, with mermaid tears. "Perhaps, perhaps! You shall have to wait and see about the stories." Slughorn winked at her. "Though when you get to be my age, these summers pass so quickly! Ah, not like when you're young, and every day is new and exciting." He popped another scone into his mouth. "As I recall, you two live quite close, do you not? Did you spend time together over the holidays?"

Younger? Merlin, really? Severus firmly kept his mouth shut, not about to say anything in front of Slughorn. He did speak up when Slughorn made mention of their proximity in the muggle world. "We did spend some time together, Professor," Severus agreed quietly. "It's nice to have someone to talk to during the summer."

Lily smiled at Severus encouragingly, as if to say, 'see, this isn't so bad.'
"Yeah, we actually did loads of studying." Lily had no shame when it came to this sort of thing. "Especially potions. Honestly, I don't think I'd be doing half as well without Sev here. He's a genius."

"Ah yes, one must ever underestimate the importance of friends!" exclaimed Slughorn, thinking it would sound rather wise, like Dumbledore. "And Miss Evans, no need to be so modest. You're top of your class for a reason! Not to say your friend here isn't quite the bright mind himself." He laughed again, picked up a plate of cakes, and offered them to his guests.
