"We're using all the countercharms we can think of," Alice told him. "And everyone knows you're a good wizard." Her cheeks were maybe a little pink, but overall she was still pretty proud of herself. Coherent contribution and a compliment? Bloody hell, she'd improved over the summer. She wasn't even acting all weird and overexcite- She swished her wand a little hard, trying to look diligent and helpful, and to her mortifiction managed to throw it at Sirius. "Bugger. Sorry!" And here came the blush, like a red tsunami over her face. Dammit all! |

Glen smiled sidelong. He had to admit, it was quite refreshing not to be the one doing stupid things, but there you went... "That was nearly a very good shot," he commented, holding out his hot chocolate again with his left hand as he ran his wand over the broom. "Here. It's good to calm you down when you do something silly. Trust me." He grimaced. "I'd know all about that. Black?" He looked up briefly, blinking owlishly with his muddy brown eyes. "What were you doing to get all these curses on this?" |

"Oh!" exclaimed Frank, as Alice's wand flew from her hand. Even though it was far closer to Sirius, he quickly hurried over and grabbed it. "Here you go" he said with a shy smile, handing it back to her. He then pulled out his own wand, and positioned himself next to Glen. It took only a moment to realize this broom was positively loaded with curses. He wondered what Sirius had done to deserve it, and was very grateful when Glenn asked the question for him. |

Sirius turned slowly to look at Alice as she threw her wand, and that blush didn't seem to be just from throwing her wand at him. And since when did Alice (a very talented witch, from Sirius' experience with her) chuck her wand around? His face swivelled toward Frank and then back to Alice, a wicked gleam in his eyes as a grin spread across his face. He made a subtle nod in Frank's direction after catching Alice's eye, raising his eyebrows inquisitively. Was she sweet on his roommate? "I pissed off some dark wizards this summer," Sirius said, finally looking away from Alice to answer Glen's question. "Too cheeky with my flying skills. Death Eaters don't like being reminded how massively they suck on brooms." He snickered at the innuendo. "I managed to get off it before it exploded on me, but now it's time to rebuild her." |

Still bright red, Alice muttered thanks and took the hot chocolate and then the wand. Her fingers brushed Frank's. Damn, that wasn't helping her embarrassment. She pulled the wand away as if his hand had burned her, ducking her head to examine the broom as she held the thermos cap back out to Glen. And glancing up again, she caught Sirius' eye, and read the question loud and clear. The slowly receding blush flared again. "Sirius is far too good at pissing off Death Eaters," she managed, and to her at least it sounded both forced and unfunny. |

Glen laughed anyway, a little nervously, and screwed the cap back onto his Thermos. "Most people don't get the chance to get good at it, do they?" he asked, realised how offensive that could be, and flushed. "Sorry. Um... can I help you build the spells up again, Black? I like that sort of spell. I've been reading up on them, as well." He managed a little smile, horribly aware that he was babbling. "I found this place near Dale - just a little shop - that sells magical supplies. Don't know how none of the locals have spotted it, but Norwegian brooms are really different, as it turns out, and I wanted to know why, so..." He finally managed to shut himself up, slapping his forehead. "Sorry. I didn't get any sleep last night. I tend to get like this when I haven't slept too well." |

Frank remained quiet throughout their exchange. At first he assumed Sirius was joking about the Death Eaters, but then he realized that with Sirius' family connections it wasn't entirely unlikely. He pushed these thoughts aside, and focused on what Glen was saying. The few times he'd talked to Glen, Frank had liked him. He seemed like he didn't have things entirely together, which made Frank a bit more comfortable. "Yeah, some things about the Norwegian brooms are pretty innovative." Frank added, remembering this from a Quidditch book he'd perused. He wasn't sure entirely how this related to Sirius' broom troubles, but at least he was keeping up with the conversation. |

"You're interested in that sort of thing?" Sirius asked, twisting to Glen, genuine interest in his eyes. "Because I've been studying them too, and if I can get this to work with the broom, then I was thinking of..." He trailed off, glancing around. This sort of enthusiaism was usually reserved for the Marauders. He grinned. "Thinking of doing something highly illegal and dangerous but would be totally awesome if I could pull it off." |

"Because you never do things like that, Sirius. Highly illegal and dangerous, you?" Alice's colour was beginning to fade, but she was still sitting hunched into herself, hair half-obscuring her face. She flicked her wand and muttered another countercharm, planning on running through all the ones she knew off the top of her head before she ended up having to reach for the book. |

"Not normally," Glen admitted, relaxing slightly now that it appeared he hadn't insulted anyone too badly. "It was just that I've never seen Norwegian brooms before - I mean, I go every year, but I don't know anyone there who's magical. Well..." He frowned, thinking of Bestemor Ansfrida, the probably-witch from the Norwegian village, and amended, "Nobody who flies, anyway. So I was interested. I mean, if you look at them, they're really streamlined. Very thin. A lot of them hardly have any bristles." He traced a vague shape in the air with his free hand, still counter-charming the broom. "They're fast, but they're not very reliable. It's the sort of thing that grabs my interest. You know, why we have this sort of thing in Britain and a different sort of thing in Norway. It's like electricity." |
