"Yeah, 'cause your detention record is for everything but missing homework. Doom doom doom doom." She sucked her teeth in a grimace, staring at the broom. "Mate, that sucks! Butyou're good at that kind of thing. I can't get the hang of it." She paused, then laughed, leaning back on her hands. "I'm never going to make Auror, am I?" |

"I've had too many detentions to count," Sirius said, shaking his head. "What's a few hundred more, eh?" Sirius almost looked serious as he glanced over at Alice. He looked fondly serious. "No, you'll be a great Auror, Ali. Here, come here. You can help me with this, right? We've got to strip it down first. Can't fuck the broom itself up just by stripping it." |

"Not if I don't pass my OWLs I won't," she noted with a grimace, but shuffled over and peered at the broom. "How do you mean, strip it?" |

"Use a Detecting Spell," Sirius said, passing his wand over the broom again. "Here, feel this here? That's the Cushioning Charm. Do you know the anti-charm for that?" |

"I...think so." She chewed an already well-bitten thumbnail and stared at the broom for a moment, then took her wand out of her pocket and made a quick figure-of-eight motion in the air, muttering the counter-charm. Despite what she might say, Alice was never bad at spells when she was really trying. |

"Excellent," Sirius said, doing something over the tail of the broom. "Now I'll get a sore bum when I fly. Try to undo everything you can find. Everything. She'll have to go all the way down to just a useless bit of wood and twig before I can build her up again." |

"Ok!" Alice nodded sharply and set to work. All it took was a purpose to motivate Alice; some of her teachers would be positively shocked at the skill of her wandwork. "Do you know who cursed it?" she asked, taking off a streamlining charm. "I'll kick their arse for you, no questions answered." |

Sirius was silent for a few minutes, pretending that working on disabling the braking charms was taking up all his concentration. Eventually, he gave a shrug, a blank expression on his face. "Probably my parents, after they confiscated it." |

Alice blinked at him, then suddenly enveloped him in a tight hug. "Shit, Sirius, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have asked!" |

"Hey!" Sirius laughed and squirmed, getting his arms between them to push Alice off (and actually attempting to not grope her in the process). "You're the one immune to me, remember?" He shook his head, a bright smile on his face. "It's okay, Alice, really. Like I said, now I have a reason to rebuild her, and if it doesn't work, then I spend more of their money. Win-win situation for me, in the end. Not like I could use it much in London, anyway. Too many people to risk flying." |
