The train ride was loud and full of energy, as always, but non-Marauders in the carriage, they all had to be careful about what topics were brought up. Asking Remus how his summer went could not include the bits where he ripped himself up, and Sirius censored bits of his own recollection. Aside from the passed parchment, there was no mention of the Animagus transformation, and the few pranks that were plotted were tame and almost predictable. No matter how comfortable Sinistra was with their antics, the Marauders did not want to include her (or anyone else) in what was a mostly-secret ritual. The Feast was similarly devoid of details, though Sirius led all the cheers for new Gryffindors (and hissed for all new Slytherins). It was hardly a private venue, though Sirius did start the new year off right by stealing a kiss from Hestia Jones. Remus, as a prefect, had the password for the Tower, so the Marauders didn't have to wait for anyone else to leave before they slipped away after dessert. Sirius took the spiral stairs to their dormitory two at a time, bursting into the red and gold room to collapse on his bed, the one beside the window. "Home sweet home," he declared, sprawling across the ruby coverings. "At last." |

"You know, home's supposed to be where you go in the holidays," James commented brightly, bellyflopping onto the bed next to Sirius and sighing blissfully. "But then, that's for normal people. Anyone want presents now?" Reaching into his trunk, which was standing peacefully by the bed, he pulled out a large plastic bag and rustled it invitingly. "I have Roman chocolates!" |

"I do!" Peter jumped onto his bed, waving an arm, then flopped down to rummage in his trunk over the far edge of the bed. "I brought presents too!" He grinned, holding up several paper carrier bags. The contents of at least one could be guessed. For starters, it bore a legend saying 'monde de sucreries', and anyway, Pete made a habit of bringing back lollies from every holiday he went on. |

"Oooh, presents!" Sirius rolled over, pulling his own trunk and digging through it. "Let's see... I got everyone handfuls of gen-u-ine Egyptian sand-bloody grit got into everything-and some cursed puzzle boxes." He held one up, a wooden pyramid. "If you don't know the way to open these, you get a nasty curse unleashed on you, inspired by Egyptian booby traps. But don't worry, I know how to open all of them." He grinned. "Perfect hiding place for something you don't mind me seeing." |

"I got you all cheap tourist tat," James said cheerfully, "and sweets. I did get you some decent stuff as well, but you get the cheap stuff first, 'cause I'm like that. Plus, of course, the memories. And I got Sirius photos of a very nice Italian girl who wouldn't stop coming on to me. I had to bury them at the bottom, though. They keep flashing me." |

"I ran out of money," Peter admitted, plopping down his bags in front of him and sitting cross-legged on his bed, rummaging through them. "So they aren't great presents." He took several smaller paper bags out of each carrier, and, checking the contents of each, started sorting them into three piles. "Hey, um, Sirius, uh, how bad are these nasty curses that I'll get if I forget how to open mine?" |

"I'll keep those pictures in my box," Sirius said with a laugh, tossing one to James and another to Peter. Peter's was a much darker wood than James'. "Yours isn't too bad, Pete. I know you're crap at stuff like that, so yours'll just give you boils that can be easily magicked away. I wouldn't recommend trying to open any of the lighter ones, though." |

"What sort of curse do these ones have?" James asked curiously, catching his one-handed and examining it thoughtfully. "Hospital wing, St Mungo's, or cemetery?" Shrugging, he put his down on the bed next to him and delved into his plastic bag again. "Humourous Pisa t-shirts, anyone?" He held up a handful of red t-shirts, each with a little leaning tower protruding from where the waistband would be, or an arrow pointing downwards with 'Leaning Tower' emblazoned on it in yellow letters. "You'd better still fit these." |

Peter caught his box with both hands, holding it as if it might explode, and gently placed it on the bed next to him. He snorted into his hand at the sight of James' gifts. "I'm not wearing that," he protested in a slightly high-pitched tone, pointing at the shirts and still laughing. "No way!" |

"Awesome!" Sirius bounced once on his bed, reaching for the shirts. "Gimme, gimme! I'll take Pete's, too, if he really doesn't want it!" He immediately wiggled out of the top of his robes to put the Pisa shirt on, grinning at the location of the tower. "It's a bit too small, the picture, but it'll do," he declared. "Your box, James, should... I think yours is the one that will completely numb your hands if you mess it up. Pomfrey should be able to reverse it." |
